I've been to a few matches this year. Get to one if you can. Team is really good (#6 in the country and tied for first in the SEC). Admission is free. With multiple matches going on at once, there's always something to watch.

Because my knowledge of tennis would fit on the head of a pin, please enlighten me a bit:

1. Seems like we're really, really good at singles and average at best in doubles. Is it unusual to have such a big gap between the two? Any speculation on why? Maybe it's a "that's tennis" thing.

2. What's the rule on when play stops when one team clinches the overall win? Sometimes everything stops when one team gets to 4 points overall, other times all the matches play out even after one team clinches. I scrolled through our results and couldn't find any pattern to this, like conference vs. nonconference, Sunday vs. Saturday, etc. Do coaches just agree up front?

3. What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?

This one is simple. Sometimes coaches agree in advance to finish things out to give players reps. Sometimes they play until someone hits 4. The later you get into the season, the less likely you will see scores like 5-2, 6-1 or 7-0. I get it - as things get tighter at the end of the season and into postseason, you want to see how your #4, 5 and 6 singles players can finish matches.

If you look at our results, you see that our first four early non-conference matches all went over 4. Then we went to a tournament where everything stopped at 4. Then its kind of been a mixed bag in conference season.

We are tied with Texas at 9-2 in the SEC. Texas beat us 4-3 so they have the championship tiebreaker We bith have three matches left - two against the worst teams in the conference in Arkansas and Alabama, and one against a 7-4 Oklahoma team on the road. Texas has Ole Miss, Auburn and Florida left - all middle of the pack 5-5/4-6 teams. Florida has the best chance to pull an upset and give us the conference title outright.

Tennis both guys and girls together runs a deficit of around $1.2 to 1.5 Million. Thís would be the last non-revue sport we would cut when that time comes- and it will come. But this is great, to be thís good and represent Mississippi State thís well on a national level at such a low cost for BOTH a men’s and women’s sport- with the guy’s ranked 6th in the nation and 1st in SEC; and the girls 44th and 8th.

Good analysis. One point, in tournament play I think you're always going to stop play when you get to 4 wins. You're playing a lot of matches on short turnaround. No sense in wasting energy on a match that's already been won.

Definitely depends on the viscosity of the substance being swallowed. Diet is a contributing factor.
