Calipari just can’t help himself. He pissed another loaded roster away, but he’s more concerned about Kentucky. Typical Calipari, always focused on the wrong thing. God only knows the amount of NIL money Tyson and Walmart will give him for next season. Might be $35 million.
Seems like he‘s motivated now, but only because he wants to buy a Champion ship to stick it to Kentucky.
An article from Sports Illustrated yesterday makes the argument that Calipari is going to have to put more effort into getting better older guys – at least in the Frontcourt – if Ark. is ever going to compete for a title.
As you said, the article suggests the problem isn’t money, as Ark. has had and will have the money to land older guys if Calipari wants to. The issue, however, is Calipari’s doesn’t have the desire to do it. Stated that those who "cover CBB for a living" believe roster construction is the reason Arkansas’ perennial ceiling is likely "another No. 4 or 5 seed with a solid wall waiting to shut them out once again in the Sweet 16."
At this point, Calipari’s ultimate end game is not winning a championship - although he’d gladly take one, and as you said would probably love to stick that in UK's face - his primary goal is something else. UK fans know what that something else is – it's getting 5-star freshmen drafted as high as possible to help Calipari build what he sees as
his legacy. The marketing major has certainly shown he earned his degree, as he’s been very successful in building his legacy as the coach who “made” the most Pros. He’ll add two more this year, and probably a couple more next season. Those recruiting wins will likely appease and sustain him at Ark. until he’s “helped” enough families (marketing major indeed).
