Rick Pitino criticized for coaching decision in loss vs. Duke

John Lund posted a comedic GIF with the caption: “Ruben Prey when someone asks him after the game why Rick Pitino didn’t play him late in the second half while having the best game of his life.”

Another New York sports fan posted: “Rick Pitino worst move tonight was not playing Ruben Prey extended minutes.” Another St. John’s fan wrote, “It’s hard to question Rick Pitino. I know he is one of the best to ever do it, but I just can’t comprehend Ruben Prey basically sitting the rest of the game after hitting his 4th three. Great run Johnnies!”

Even the New York Post promoted its coverage of the St. John’s postgame pressers with “find out why Ruben Prey didn’t play in the second half.”

Pitino gets a pass just like PirateCrew would give Holloway a pass.
C'mon that's a dopey comment. Pointless linking the two. It was quite surprising that Prey never got back into the game. He was not only hitting his threes, he was also blocking shots. What any of that has to do with Sha or this board or the price of tea in China is meaningless.

LOFL. Sha is not criticized here. You can read this board and say that with a straight face. He deserves some of it, and some wont give him credit for anything. I know my posts gave gotten more positive in reaction to all the negative stuff l written here.

Two Hall of Fame coaches judgements are being being questioned rightfully so:
Bill Self from Kansas for fouling to quick on their last position with 3 fouls to give in a tied game thus resulting in St John’s having to much time left to score the winning basket.
Rick Pitino for having Reuben Prey on the bench after he ignited St John’s in the first half to a double digit lead.

I feel what is fair is that it can be digested is that you got mega efficiency out of his minutes but 4 others were woefully inefficient. Jackson Flagrant was an extra possession. And the 4 guys did not shoot/score well enough. Sanon was a 0.

I was shocked at how easy it seemed for Duke to get o rebounds, finish at the rim, and keep Zuby from operating down low. Z had decent stats but imo, Duke kept him from being Zuby.

I feel Self strategy was not so bad vs players turning back to ball/driver.

Yep, difference between really great players and lottery picks.
Yup, two things I thought of, that is one, zuby might have lost a few bucks, and Mullins cant still be a lottery pick, can he? I really like Mullin but he needs some muscle.

I don't remember SJU shoot as many 3s as they did in last two games. When it works great but eventually you run into a cold spell. With Zuby. Hopkins and Mitchell they should have pounded the ball inside more.

Was zoobi look like a child next to those duke Big guys. And they were getting turned away at the rim, left and right.

Saint john's shot fifty percent from three in the first half and forty percent for the game.

I wasn’t. Duke is bigger/longer across the board at basically every position, and was Kenpom’s top rated team defensively. They did a great job on the glass, which Sheyer said was a priority. They were going to live with SJU making 3s, and adjusted to that zone when SJU was shooting well to make that piece more difficult, at least what Sheyer said. It was somewhat effective but the comeback was really fueled by Duke using their combination of size and skill to get “bully drives” repeatedly to the rim, whether off switches or just taking advantage of smaller guards. Plus Evans and Boozer just making some great individual shots and plays, including some really difficult ones.

Zuby definitely found it harder to operate in the paint being checked by the ACC defensive player of the year or someone else plus all the other length and size Duke brought to the table. Still ends up with 17 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists. A warrior who had a great career and doesn’t look anything like the same player I saw a few years ago when he got there.

I'd like to hear what Pitino had to say (if anything) about not using Prey second half. It's a fair question.

SJ didn’t have an elite point guard in October and didn’t have one in April. That was the difference. SJ got everything they could out of their front court plus Prey but the guard unit just didn’t hold up compared to Duke. And, yes, Duke was bigger at virtually every position. Still a very good run for SJ.

my lack of interest and knowledge of this yrs duke shows here. Those 2nd chance pts were real killers. Thought zuby could do better inside against any college team, wrong again! And the game plan seems to have said RP saw it like you did dehere.

I’ve been plenty critical of Pitino, but you aren’t playing Reuben Prey in crunch time over Bryce, Zuby or DMitch. I don’t care how hot he was in the first half.

I was shocked how easily Duke scored in the second half. They had to have scored on 10 straight possessions in the second half, most of them lay ups. St John’s best defense was putting Duke on the FT Line.

An odd game. Each team had 3 or so runs where tley outscored the other by 8 it 10 points

Are you sure they are not going to have an elite point guard in April? Check back in mid-April.

They will have an elite point who’s name has not even dropped into portal yet. He is a game changer

That wasn’t what he meant at all and you know it

This post screams sour grapes/day after bad loss

Who cares who you will have next year less than 24 hours after losing/blowing a S16 game

Also why come here and back handed gloat on a board of a school beneath you

Go to the Duke board and tell them you have the second coming of Jesus coming to play pg next year….so weak

I’m talking about what happened this year not what might happen next year.

He knows that. It was a troll level response. You want to come here as another teams fan and talk objectively I am all for that. I have zero problem giving SJU credit and speaking truth. But don’t be a troll.

They didn’t have a PG. Darling is a nice depth rotation bench PG at this level because of his defensive tenacity, leadership, grittiness and how hard he plays. But they thought in the offseason they could tie Jackson into one after missing on their bigger targets and it became apparent right away to Pitino I’m sure that wasn’t going to happen. So he cobbled it together and made them a much much better team than they were in Nov/Dec, which is why he is a HOFer. Ultimately the guards cost them against a better team in a great game. Nothing to be ashamed about.

It was sarcasm. Holloway would’ve been crucified. But you’re right it was a dopey comment. Its purpose was to vent as I was stuck at a Disney on an Ice show with three 3 year olds.
Pitino was foolish for taking out Prey and deserves some heat.
