This interview tells me everything I need to know about Oak. I'll cuss him out at some point, probably soon, maybe tomorrow, but I want him coaching MSU for a long time.

Interesting info on Foster being dinged up and why Chone was starting catcher early on.

Just a master class in coaching in this short interview. Plus, he just seems like a great dude.

Yeah he takes every fault on himself...unlike unnamed football coaches. I was sold on him after watching a video of him coaching practice. He is always teaching.
He's definitely shown me he's a coach and not a manager. Every video I've seen he's actively participating in actual baseball. He seems to have a knack for answering those questions I assume we all have and his answers assuage the masses.

It's early but I've been trying to pay attention to if there's a portal player who hasn't contributed. He's definitely batting higher than our other sports in that area.

Maybe he's a one hit wonder but at this point I'd definitely put money on him. By one hit wonder I mean specifically this portal class. I'm sold on his coaching 100%, eventually he'll miss on some portal players.

Some of you still remember my favorites for our HC opening during the season. While there were lots of good sounding candidates out there, I felt the top 3 coaches in college baseball were Tim Corbin, Tony Vitello, and Brian O'Connor. And I felt we had no shot whatsoever at those 3. Corbin will never leave Vandy. Vitello was good, but a little on the hot-headed side, and O'Conner, like Corbin, was never going to leave Virginia. So, I was ecstatic beyond belief when Zach was able to prove me wrong and rein in O'Conner. I was ready to settle for someone like Mingione or Butch, who both would have done well at MSU. I would really like to hear more of the back story of how Zach talked Brian into it, besides the big money offer. I really didn't think any of those coaches would have come to small town Starkvegas other than maybe Mingione or Thompson (because they already knew what it was like to live here). And as it all turned out, I think we got the right guy and feel strongly we will have our 2nd CWS Championship within 5 years of his hiring and possibly sooner.

I'll say this, the wife is a big factor in a decision like that. I think their kids are out of HS now so that makes it easier, but most wives used to the standard of living afforded by a husband earning 7 figures are not going to be in love with moving from wine and cheese Charlottesville to Beer and BBQ Starkville. I bet he's got a good one.

The comparisons to Bama hiring Saban after he’d been at LSU and his brief NFL stint are spot on, it’s just so obvious this guy is an elite coach and is going to do big things here.

My college age son enjoys the press conferences and sound bites almost more than the games. I love what he hears from Oak.....way way better than some of the "influencers" he watches on the interwebs.

That's great. I honestly worry that the younger generations don't easily separate the real ones from all the BS out there.

I arrived at MSU in fall of 96 for our 1st Golden age of football. My son got there this past fall for what I hope is our golden age of baseball. I never hear from his *** except when he sends me a selfie eating food in a random left field lounge box. Not one time in my life have I been invited to a box in left field. I kind of hate his *** but I'm glad he arrived at state when we don't suck at at least one sport.

Best coach we’ve ever hired. Seeing him closer & more in even more impressed than on the day we hired him.

I'm the same. You and I are both kinda cynical (😁), so the love fest is weird, but the guy is just so clearly a great coach.

I'm even more sure if he and we are blessed with at least 10 seasons in Starkville, he's gonna win a minimum of 2 nattys. He's got a real chance with this team, this year.

Yeah I think a lot of people were wondering if he was getting too cute in the 7th. It worked itself out thankfully.

Nothing he did there surprised or bothered me. It's how he's used Dane Burns all season. Kessinger even explained exactly what we were gonna do before we did it.

The only problem was Ben Davis not being able to get the ball up and throw strikes. It's hard to plan for one of your trusted guys to come in with two outs and immediately walk two lesser hitters to bring up a real HR threat. In hindsight should have pulled him quicker, but that's a tough situation for a coach.

Right. I'm not second guessing him.

I am saying though that it's easier to get yourself into a mess that way in college baseball. If you bring five college pitchers into the game, no matter how good the staff, there is a solid chance that one of the guys just won't be able to find the zone that night.

Coaches usually make what they believe are the right decisions, but sometimes the players just don't execute the plays or pitches. I guess either way the HC gets the blame. I don't usually get upset over failed strategies/plays unless we continue to make the same mistakes over and over.....game after game and not being addressed.

I think baseball is the sport where managers get the most criticism. Good decisions often fail. And bad ones sometimes succeed.

I think he beat Bianco like 4 or 5 times to maybe one loss while at Virginia. All games in the NCAA tourney and CWS. Won a Super in Oxford.
