I'll be honest. If I'm a parent and I can only choose one coach for my son to play for and it's either Self or Pope, I'm going with the guy who has done it for 30 years successfully.

When I lived in Idaho Falls for about three years, I knew several black Mormons one was actually senior leader in the church. The bottom line stereotypes is a nasty thing and you just throw that out there honestly makes the site look bad.
That Mormon cartoon from like the 70s explaining dark complexions did the modern Church of LDS no favors. That said, Pope has the respect of the 96 guys and I've never heard a word against him in a racial regard.
I'll take Pope's living actions over a cartoon from the Cold War any day.

I see everyone talking about "getting these guys to the league"! These guys are going to the league regardless of who coaches them. Cal could recruit good players but HE didn't get them to the league. Look how many guys he kept from moving to the league. I really with the NBA would just get rid of the one year of college rule. It would make the game so much better.
Kinda sounds like "yeah, I'll go to the prom with you as long as the captain of the football team does ask me."

Not a big deal but when I lived in Nevada in the 80’s I worked with some Mormons and I’ll tell you they look out strongly for each other and will stab you in the back in a heartbeat.
I was being sarcastic, while pointing out that UK was'the first SEC school to play black football players. If black players dont like UK, which is not the case IMHO, I not sure there is a good reasonfor them to not like UK.
