generate plenty of buzz and put butts in Carver's seats, is Beth less likely to need a stellar wrestling program? Are Jan and Ben buying TnT more time to get things right?

Are you spending too much time worrying about speculative "What's in the administrations head?" junk that really doesn't matter? :)
Good B-ball teams really don't undermine Iowa Wrestling. Poor recruiting, poor performance, and poor attendance undermine Iowa Wrestling.

True, however, the buts in seats argument is viable here. If womens and mens basketball both continue to be a draw then wrestling may continue to take a hit in season ticket sales.

Women's basketball is still losing money each year. Definitely still need wrestling to be putting butts in seats.

And women’s basketball has been predictably sliding since Clark and those seniors left and Bluder retired. Over on the women’s basketball board, they have been talking about getting rid of Jan all year. They think she is wasting the 2-3 years of momentum you get from the Clark years.

Those people are idiots, and 'predictably sliding' is probably too harsh... The Iowa program had a better season than they did Clarks sophomore year.. its unlikely they (or anyone else) has another CC, but overall the program is in as good of a place as it has been since peak C Viv.

MBB generating more revenue probably doesn't hurt the wrestling program much. I dont think it necessarily buys TnT 'more' time, either. I think Beth seems pretty sharp, and trust her to do whats best for athletic programs (she doesn't seem to have gotten much wrong yet, unless maybe she had a legit shot at DT and passed)

I don’t see why it would change anything. If it does then it could also have the opposite effect too. Making a risky move to fire the winningest coach in Iowa history then nailing the hire and making the elite 8 in the first year may give some extra confidence.

Wrestling loses money every year, too.

If you’re a fan of a non revenue sport like we are, we want and need the revenue sports to do well. It helps immensely.

For sure. My point was just that the success of women's basketball isn't doing anything with respect to "buying TnT more time."

If anything, the success of men's basketball will put more pressure on TnT. Beth has shown that she can make a shrewd hire that will do well in year one. Of course, when it came to men's basketball there were a couple of natural fits (McCollum being one).

I've been a season ticket holder for many years. This year was the first year where I have made the conscious decision not to go to home dual(s) because of the product on the mat. I'm debating about whether to renew my season tickets. People like me are the biggest concern for Beth, in my opinion.

Similar boat for me. This was our 2nd year without season tickets. Considering the 90 minute trek one way to Iowa City, juice just didn’t seem worth the squeeze. Most meets are on TV and being an older lifelong fan of the sport, enjoy listening to Grace/Ironside on the radio.

If we lived in Iowa City we’d likely have kept the tickets but it’s frustrating to invest time/money to show up and matches don’t materialize or the product is stale and you wish you’d stayed home and tuned in via TV or radio.

Still love my Hawks. It’s not about wins/loses for me, it’s about heart/effort on the mat. I expect them to be in shape and wrestling an aggressive seven minute match.

There are lots more who feel like you that do not post on this board and will speak without being vocal. Its a real thing and you are spot on- this is what will ultimately force change

Worst thing for TNT is the success MBB is having, now that Coach McCollum and company look to be righting the ship and will be drawing decent crowds in the future, Beth will not have to focus on "fixing" pillar of the department. It was outline pretty heavily in that Leistikow article - there is an expectation that the men's wrestling program is an exciting product that fills Carver...

Zero sum game? Not so sure about the men's wrestling team. Roundball and men's wrestling in Iowa usually have different fans.

Now that I buy. McCollum shows that Beth knows how to hire new coaches. We all have expectations for Iowa wrestling, and when you see a new coach do this for Iowa men's basketball, which has been mediocre for years, it begs the question: Why couldn't the right new wrestling coach do this for the wrestling team as well. If Tom has a second act, now would be the time to let it rip.
