Iowa was called for ONE foul the entire second half

Can't remember anything like that for any team in any game I've ever seen. ONE foul . . . And Iowa was playing terrific defense and hitting the boards while limiting Nebraska to only 25 points. ONE foul. And with 3 or 4 minutes to go, Nebraska had only been charged with TWO. That is one of the most incredible facts in an incredible game.

What a game. What a coach. What a team. As Ben says, Iowa imposed its will the second half and really took control those final few, crucial minutes. I still can't believe Iowa is one of 8 teams standing and is ONE win from the Final Four. ONE!

Sage was fantastic. Alvaro was incredible again. Koch was excellent. Once more it was a team effort with everyone making a contribution in one way or another.

Grand slam hire by Beth Goetz results in one of the greatest Iowa basketball seasons in at least the last half century.

And did I mention Iowa was only called for ONE foul in the second half . . .

BTW: Iowa's last Final Four team, in 1980, played in Indianapolis. This year's Final Four is, you guessed it, in Indianapolis. You take it from there . . .

Well I noticed they only had 2 at one point late in the game. They only got to their final number of 7 I think because of late game intentional fouls mostly.
Yes, as I said in my original post, the two teams COMBINED had THREE fouls with about 3 or 4 minutes left in the game. I can't recall EVER seeing a stat like that. And that's why the second half may be the best half of basketball I've seen in decades. The officials were nonexistent, and the players on both teams just played great basketball. I'd take that every time.

Like I said, Nebraska were 3 pt merchants.

They didn't do a damn thing to draw contact worthy of getting fouls called, so they have nothing to complain about.

Dumba$$es not only left themselves undermanned but "under-fouled."
I was saying at around the 3 minute mark Iowa needed to aggressively throw themselves at the ball playing kamikaze defense. They had so many to give and if it came down to needing to foul to get Nebraska to hopefully miss some front ends they needed to get closer to the bonus. And going all out might even force a few turnovers.

Great recap! IMHO the referees knew it was a rivalry, and going to be a hotly contested game, and they decided to just let them play and go after each other. What we got was a fun, and at times stressful game where the game was decided by the players and not the officials.

Refs were pretty good. Stirtz got fouled on a three, they missed it
They called the Tate Sage block on Frager a foul too. But overall they were very good, I thought. You can't expect perfection from refs. Almost every time Iowa blocked someone in Big Ten play, it was called a foul. There was a play @minnesota that stands out in my mind, I think it was Koch and he blocked the absolute crap out of some guy near the free throw line, the ball changed directory in that super obvious block fashion, and they called a foul and every Iowa player just recoiled in disgust.

Late in the first half Nebby only had 2 fouls. Both teams were playing really good positional defense with their feet and there wasnt a lot of grinding and bumping in the lane, more of a perimeter game

well all I can say about the ref's is this: Thank God Paul Szelc wasn't in our game! Well known Hawk hater and if he would have been around I'm sure we would have 3 Hawks fouled out!(Paul Szelc is an ignorant scoundrel! I disapprove of his very existence)

I couldn't believe it! When it got down to possible intentional foul time for NE I looked up and they only had 2 and Iowa had one. Crazy!

Like you should foul strategically during a game?

It was a joke really.

Kind of delicious that Iowa could kind of use Nebraska's good play, in terms of not fouling, against them. THEM, the team that already hates us SO much. I love giving them every reason possible.

First off, the entire second half was pretty much played at the perimeter. A lot less fouling out there as a general rule of thumb.

That having been said, Ol' Doodle was so utterly and completely locked into the ebb and flow of the game that it came as a GIGANTIC shock when Doodle looked closer at the bottom of the on-screen scoreboard thingy with like 2:50 left and saw there had been a grand total of 3 fouls called. Even when everything's evolving 20+ feet from the basket on almost every possession, the notion of 80+ percent of a half being played with only 3 total fouls called in the modern "physical" brand of basketball is utterly absurd.

I believe Hawks had only seven fouls in the game and two of those were on three point shots. Which Nebby knocked down all six.

When a team shoots 38 three you aren't going to foul very much. When I saw they had only two fouls late, I told the missez, they will need to fould a lot andburn up clock.

I Love It, I Love It, I Love It!
