This page features county population estimates totals and components of change for years 2020-2025.
The schools are busting at the seams up here. The brand new Hernando high that just opened this year is already at capacity.Interesting, Harrison County is now the largest county in the state. Desoto in 3rd, but may pass Harrison in a decade or so. Delta and Southwest continue to hemorrhage population.
All facts.Brain drain still in full effect, even if it did tick up from 2024 to 2025. Trend line since 2020 is still -0.2% down, just like from 2010 to 2020.
I'm telling you, young people want a thriving metro area. As cities become more expensive, folks start migrating to cheaper cities. Jackson could conceivably become one of those, if it would get out of its own way. But it won't, and MS will continually be held back by that.
What's the typical price per square foot now for a new home around Hernando? The schools are busting at the seams up here. The brand new Hernando high that just opened this year is already at capacity.
It’s going to be a lot less when Hernando flips. And it’s coming, unfortunately…What's the typical price per square foot now for a new home around Hernando?
Explain that a little more, if you don't mind. Genuinely interested in what you mean. It’s going to be a lot less when Hernando flips. And it’s coming, unfortunately…
Yep. They should've taken some of the money they spent on its aesthetics and put it towards more buildings and practicality...it was full the day it opened. The schools are busting at the seams up here. The brand new Hernando high that just opened this year is already at capacity.
Becomes infiltrated with Memphis. A few short years ago, Southaven was Hernando. Cordova was Germantown. South Jackson was tame.Explain that a little more, if you don't mind. Genuinely interested in what you mean.
Delta and Southwest continue to hemorrhage population.
I think a lot of that would happen if it was safe. For Jackson, step 1 is safety and utilities in a green zone near UMMC, including fondren and Elvis’s; then secure all the UMMC students nearby; then give them consolidated, safe places to rage; then build into the young couples and singles residential
they’ve done some good stuff there in the last 15 years but it’s not nearly complete/sufficient
Amazing to me even low IQ people could elect him over and over again.
I mean, yeah probably but you’re talking years from now. Hernando is still in the growth stage.Becomes infiltrated with Memphis. A few short years ago, Southaven was Hernando. Cordova was Germantown. South Jackson was tame.
I think with new mayor & the Capitol Police Zone there will be some improvement. But there’s a long way to go & if they keep electing the same judges, not much you can do. I do think the Capitol Police Zone also has a different judicial system. But that’s only in the zone.I think a lot of that would happen if it was safe.
being safe should be pretty easy, but it won’t be.
It’s fairly safe now. A lot of the MS hivemind just can’t handle the idea of a big city. With investment, it gets more safe.I think a lot of that would happen if it was safe.

A big step would get getting rid of the stadium and have UMMC get bigger. Build JSU’s stadium. Thats actually the first step. For Jackson, step 1 is safety and utilities in a green zone near UMMC, including fondren and Elvis’s; then secure all the UMMC students nearby; then give them consolidated, safe places to rage; then build into the young couples and singles residential

I think Hernando has a chance to hold on. I haven’t been there in a long time, but if they can keep the retail, crappy apartments, and things like that in check, they have a chance. Brandon is trying to do that. Madison’s obviously done a good job but they don’t have a core downtown/square type area like the other two, I wonder if it stays up once that mayor is done. Contain riff raff in other areas, is the key.I mean, yeah probably but you’re talking years from now. Hernando is still in the growth stage.
I’m in favor of the stadium leaving, but UMMC already has 2500 active students, and they’re too scattered. If you make the surrounding area safe enough to get the girls who move to 17ing Flowood to feel comfortable living within walking distance, that’s a big deal. I was a UMMC student not that long ago and saw all this stuff first handA big step would get getting rid of the stadium and have UMMC get bigger. Build JSU’s stadium. Thats actually the first step.
A lot of them live in the large gated condo complex across the street on Lakeland. They definitely need more though.I’m in favor of the stadium leaving, but UMMC already has 2500 active students, and they’re too scattered. Yeah, that came right after I left, and that’s what they need more of + more places to go out nearby. Before that, it was random sketchy apartments in belhaven/fondren, random houses in leftover and parham bridges, vieux carre, and flowood/brandon. I saw all the taxi voucher receipts for the parties, so I saw all the places people were going. It was insane, so we capped the vouchers.A lot of them live in the large gated condo complex across the street on Lakeland. They definitely need more though.
Hernandos main problem is infrastructure.I think Hernando has a chance to hold on. In non-suburbia area, Tupelo has done a decent job too. Obviously the college towns. That’s about it.
I don’t count the coast since it’s limited by hurricanes. It’ll always be cool, but just limited.
ETA: At some point, you have to invest to keep a place nice. You can’t just continually outrun stuff.
A bigger step would be to split UMMC away from Ole Miss. It needs to be its own entity. Ole Miss has been holding that place back for decades.A big step would get getting rid of the stadium and have UMMC get bigger. Build JSU’s stadium. Thats actually the first step.
Unfortunately that ship sailed a long time ago. I lived across the street (Lakeland) for two years when I was there. Even back then it was starting to get a bit sketchy. I moved my last two years.I’m in favor of the stadium leaving, but UMMC already has 2500 active students, and they’re too scattered. That town has been in decline 40 years. And it’s not near anything. Nice olaceI visited Natchez recently for the first time in a very long time. I wouldn’t mind retiring there.
I agree they are doing better but the stuff was so bad that better is still bad.I think with new mayor & the Capitol Police Zone there will be some improvement. But there’s a long way to go & if they keep electing the same judges, not much you can do. I do think the Capitol Police Zone also has a different judicial system. But that’s only in the zone.
You are a GD bafoon. It’s fairly safe now. A lot of the MS hivemind just can’t handle the idea of a big city. With investment, it gets more safe.
The only way that makes sense is getting that GD rif raft away from UMMC.A big step would get getting rid of the stadium and have UMMC get bigger. Build JSU’s stadium. Thats actually the first step.
But it’s already safe. Ask goat.I’m in favor of the stadium leaving, but UMMC already has 2500 active students, and they’re too scattered. To visit. But I wouldn’t live there.
185 sq ft new construction. I’m working with one now in a neighborhood with average of 220 sq ft new. What's the typical price per square foot now for a new home around Hernando?
Lewisburg is changing before Hernando, it’s already started there. ( most people don’t realize it yet) Hopefully, Hernando will continue to stay away from large apartment complex’s and that will help among other things.Becomes infiltrated with Memphis. A few short years ago, Southaven was Hernando. Cordova was Germantown. South Jackson was tame.
I was encouraged by the new mayor, but he made a very poor selection as Police Chief.I think with new mayor & the Capitol Police Zone there will be some improvement.
They are trying, I remember they were paying remote workers 15K to move there, for a while. And they have the movie industry, which has convinced an airline to start up small service at the airport. So it's not as dire as it used to be. But yeah still a long way to go. Currently have a good mayor, but we all know that can change quickly. That town has been in decline 40 years. And it’s not near anything. Nice olace

Eventually the Capital Police will have everything north of Hwy 80 and JPD will have everything South.I was encouraged by the new mayor, but he made a very poor selection as Police Chief.
