Thanks for the link. I am not sure this assumption, however, is true:

“That number [roster budget], which multiple people briefed on the spending confirmed to The Athletic, is a staggering one-year total and undoubtedly the most expensive name, image and likeness budget in the sport.”

What a media fluff piece almost certainly bought by JMI
Or....

Other universities have dipped their toes into these waters. Schools such as Georgia, Louisville, Florida and Florida State operate their athletic departments as associations or “direct report organizations” that are financially tethered to the university but have their own board. More recently, schools such as Clemson, Michigan State and Texas Tech have spun off just their revenue generating positions into an LLC.

So contrary to popular belief some folks seemingly made some good business decisions to not get with the times but ahead of them.

UK is the model other folks will be copying. That’s what this fan base demands. Especially in basketball.

JMI deal is worth half a billion. Say what you want about it…half a billion…

That fan city over time will generate insane money. It’s what pro ownership groups do. Own the team and own all or a lot of the area around where they play.

Now when the hallowed halls of Rupp arena are being desecrated with comic cons, bass fishing conventions, monster truck rallies…at least the program will make some money off of it.

Also circumnavigating all the BS bureaucracy that comes with a public education institution will go a long way. Master stroke of business fancy pants legal maneuvering that will pay off.

Agreed with all of this, and now the increased budget has to be spent wisely and that’s where a GM and a full front office like an NBA team needs to happen.

Edit to add: this is exactly what Stein has already done with the football staff x2. Which is why I believe it’s already happening and we’re going to see multiple roles created and filled for the UK basketball front office in pretty short order.

If Pope wants to save his job then he needs to take advantage and produce. If he was truly resistant because he wants total control then his own hubris will be his downfall. Either way we need to get this in place ASAP for whoever the coach will be moving forward, beyond next season.

To me it was clear JMI wasn't the hurdle everyone was making it out to be (some things I don't love about the deal for sure, but nothing that explains all of Pope's recruiting failures). EVERY coach at UK is having recruiting success.... except for the one with the weird personality, in the sport that most fans in the state care the most about. So if we can't blame the coach that we're keeping for at least another year, we have to find something else to blame his struggles on.

Stein is crushing it. Brooks is crushing it. Baseball and women's volleyball have been having success. Only Pope seems to be struggling when it comes to recruiting, relationship building, making the right connections, getting the right support staff around him, etc.

JMI has never been the problem. It’s a manufactured problem by some that were put in their place by JMI.

They then used it to make excuses for Pope.

Pope does not have a JMI problem. JMI has a Pope problem.

UK has never been outbid for a player. Nor will they be.

One job opening will cure all of UK’s basketball ills.

Simply put , wtf is Pope doing? How in the hell do we still not have a single recruit with all of this resources
Why do you want Freshmen? They make Freshman mistakes that generate Big Blue hate, and demands that they transfer. Then when they do, the narrative switches to "Pope can't develop players".
PDS is real here.

I just don’t understand how a state funded school can just spin off the entire athletics dept? Don’t they have an obligation to the taxpayers? Didn’t they just take a loan from the university which is funded by taxpayers?

For an Ohio state fan that is a member of one of the meanest fan bases in sports, it’s comical reading your posts. Lmbo you never have a single nice thing to say about UK fans.

Glad to know that we have people to manage the money generated by the Sports Programs. We just need a coach that can relate to the players and be the player coach that Pope can’t seem to be right now or maybe forever

Creating a myriad of LLC’s, partnerships, subsidiaries, etc., and moving the money back and forth is a great way to keep everyone confused as hell, make audits difficult, and to enrich the insiders. In other words, Mafia-style money laundering.

Except these guys don’t seem interested in improving Kentucky sports. I could at least appreciate it if they were supporting basketball at least. But it sounds like they’re only interested in taking advantage Kentuckians’ love of their team and taking their money.

I read that whole article right before & was gonna post it before seeing someone already did lol. Pope said "I have a whole group of people working contracts, working possibilities". Well, where are all the recruits then, they must not be working that damn hard lol, 🤣🤣

UK is ripe for massive corruption. I don’t see how we net 185 mil one year and the next a debt of 35 mil and a talk at us from the president. Look all these guys care about is money. There was no mention of championships. It’s gonna just give like the big city experience if there’s an NBA team for instance I mean it could be the crappies NBA team and we’re gonna be we’re gonna there’s no talk about winning. And who’s gonna replace these guys and when it’s time to replace them how are they gonna continue to manage it through this LLC? The stuff is dangerous business there there’s messing with.
