And not in a good way :(

With Nebraska getting their first W (and advancing to the second weekend) there are not Power 5 schools left without a tourney appearance or a tourney win. Which means the new noteworthy stat is who hasn’t made a Sweet 16 yet… and sadly we are one of just two.

I’m sort of surprised by this (that everybody else has been). And UCF is brand new, so we’re basically alone. That said, it’s not going to haunt my dreams or be mentioned all the time like the bowl draught or the tourney famine.

Here is the truth: only us, Stephen Austin, and Butler (7-0!) have never lost in the first round with at least three appearances. We’re the only P4 team that can claim this.


Undefeated in Round of 64 (≥2 appearances)

Power / notable programs

• Northwestern — 3–0
• Butler — 7–0

Mid-majors / “Cinderella profile”

• Florida Gulf Coast — 2–0
• North Dakota State — 2–0
• Stephen F. Austin — 3–0
• Mercer — 2–0
• Abilene Christian — 2–0
• Middle Tennessee — 2–0
• Oral Roberts — 2–0 (2021 + 2023 runs)

Butler is in the big east. Arguably a better conference than the ACC

Not sure where you got this info, but Stephen F. Austin (more commonly called SFA) has three first round losses, most recently in 2018 to Texas Tech. We have a place in east Texas, and I went to a few SFA games this past season. Good team, and they were on track to make the NCAA tourney again this year but lost in their conference championship game. Also, three of their NCAA tournament appearances (and two of their first round wins) came a decade or so ago when Brad Underwood (yes, that guy) was their head coach.

So it sounds like NU and Butler are the only teams with at least three NCAA tourney appearances that have never lost a first round game. Good company.

I saw this Last Minute segment on 60 Minutes tonight with Duke’s Coach K and thought I’d share the link (just hope it works.) Such a great coach/public figure whose influence reaches beyond sports.

None of that is true - RE Butler, anyway.
They've won 7 straight 1st round games, but they are 11-4 in first round games since MM went to a Field of 64+.

So yeah, our 3-0 IS THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!
