This is Ben's current main 8 man rotation:

If Ben isn't the best, he has to be right up there with the best. I wonder what Izzo and Calipari, among others, would have managed to do with this roster. I don't think anyone could have done better than Ben has, and probably not even as good.

I'll take Ben McCollom at Iowa. The other schools can have anyone else.

He has 4 nat'l titles to his name. He's got a crazy win % in the 80% range. He's won at every level of college ball there is. NBA and college coaches seek him out for consulting on offense....particularly screening. He ain't swiss cheese.

And I hate to say it, but I would imagine Kansas, North Carolina (and other schools) fans are saying they should at least give Ben a call.

Kansas has a lot of NIL money; North Carolina apparently doesn't.

Ben has worked his a$$ off in getting people to attend games, too.

Remember when he was up in the student section during football games? ;)
I've been in Carver when it was packed and raucus. Carver can be a huge home court advantage. Ben has seen that and wants to bring that back. Many great coaches with long track records. Ask that question 5 to 10 years from now.

Did I say he was swiss cheese? My bad. You are right. He is the best coach ever. No one can even compare.

This is exactly how I felt about it when we were all talking about who the next coach would be. I felt like we needed a guy who is spectacular on the sidelines and can get the most out of the guys he has, considering Iowa will probably always have less overall talent than the top teams. Ben was the guy I wanted.

Though I'm hoping this year's tournament run will help spark some additional NIL funds..

I'm not sure Ben McCollum is the best coach across all of CBB, but he has to be in the convo at the very least.

And yeah its too early anoint him as Iowa Jesus, but he's done - in his very FIRST SEASON, with a mostly mid-tier conference level roster - what all of the previous 3 coaches, combined, in Iowa City couldn't do for their whole time at Iowa. And Fran had some rosters that should have made making the Sweet16 (at the very least) as easy as a walk in the park.

While trying to be level-headed about it, Ben McCollum has taken Iowa MBB to a place it hasn't seen for the better part of 3 decades. In his first season, with a lot of Drake's previous roster along with a couple transfers and a couple HS recruits.

I can't fault people thinking the future could be extremely bright.

Can't wait to see what he does with a full off season and a revitalized fanbase. Getting hired, going through on-boarding, hiring staff, etc. all takes time. This off season, he's fully integrated and can hit the ground running. Pray we beat the bugeaters, a year 1 elite 8 will turn heads around the country.

IMO he obviously is not the best given it his second year as D1 coach. But he is very good and works very hard it appears. Give him time and he has the potential to be one of the best IMO.

Bill Self is making, on average, $10.60M annually (5 yrs, $53M). He is pondering retirement.

Ben is making, on average, $3.79M annually (6 yrs, $22.75M).

I hope Ben is really, really, really happy in Iowa City. ;)

I have no information but I think this was his dream job. He’s been loyal where he’s been for to long. I personally think if everything goes right he’ll retire a Hawkeye. I just don’t see him leaving. I feel like it’s where he wants to be.

TJ is much hotter right now. Creighton, etc.

Ranked #5 here!!!

Ben is ahead of Izzo (#6), Painter (#7), TJ (#10), Sheyer (#11), Hoiberg (#14), Underwood (#15) and Miller (#16).

5. Ben McCollum, Iowa

Ben McCollum

  • Age: 44
  • Career record: 54-16
  • Final Four appearances: 0
  • National championships: 0
Ben McCollum doesn't nearly have the Division I accolades as most of the other coaches in the Sweet 16, but at 44, he has plenty of time.

Like Curt Cignetti, McCollum simply wins wherever he goes. A four-time national champion at the Division II level, McCollum took a roster primarily of D-2 players and won an NCAA Tournament game in his only season at Drake, finishing 31-4. At Iowa, he has taken a roster severely lacking talent around star Bennett Stirtz and earned a trip to the Sweet 16, something Fran McCaffery never did with the Hawkeyes.

McCollum's teams don't play an exciting brand of basketball, draining the shot clock on just about every possession and grinding out games with defense, but it works. Whether at Iowa or elsewhere, McCollum is going to be around for a long time.
