A day after he got our program embarrassed on the national stage, Mark Pope talked about his last two years being a progress compared to the previous four years.

I leave alone MP ‘ s laughable cherry picking and carving out a piece of Cal tenure of Kentucky, for the sake of continuing an ill advised comparison to a HOF Coach , and I will focus on the record breaking achievements of MP tenure at Kentucky. This can be used as proof of concept of his self credited “progress “:

1. 14-Loss Season: The Wildcats recorded 14 losses, marking only the fifth time in 123 years the program has hit that number of losses.

2. Worst SEC Finish: The team finished 9th in the SEC regular season, the lowest finish in program history.

3. Most SEC Losses to Start Tenure: Pope set a record for the most SEC losses through a coach's first two years in Kentucky history.

4. Rupp Arena Struggles: Kentucky lost three or more games at Rupp Arena for the second consecutive season under Pope.

5. First-Ever Home Losses: Under Pope, Kentucky suffered its first-ever loss at Rupp Arena to Missouri. For only the second time in over 100 years, Georgia won three out of four games against Kentucky. Additionally, Georgia picked up its first win at Rupp Arena since 2009 during Pope's tenure.

6. Postseason Performance: The season included a loss in the SEC Tournament quarterfinals as a No. 9 seed and a Round of 32 exit in the NCAA Tournament as a No. 7 seed .

7. Have the highest NIL in college basketball at his disposal , not able to secure one superstar. Instead he overpaid for ACL surgery player that didn’t get to play enough to cover the NIL funds spent. Failed to secure a back up PG or any decent 3 pts shooter.

8. Back-to-Back 25+ Point Losses: Under Pope, Kentucky suffered 25+ point losses in consecutive seasons (vs. Alabama in 2025 and @ Vanderbilt in 2026), only the third time in 123 years this has happened.

9. Worst SEC Tournament Defeat: In the 2025 SEC Tournament, Kentucky suffered a 29-point drubbing by Alabama, the largest margin of defeat the Wildcats have ever recorded in the conference tournament.

10. Worst NCAA Tournament Loss in 54 Years: Kentucky's 82–63 loss to Iowa State in the 2026 Round of 32 was the program’s worst margin of defeat in the NCAA Tournament since 1971 and the second-worst in school history.

11. Historic First: This is the first time in program history that Kentucky has reached the end of a basketball season (March 22, 2026) without a single commitment from the incoming high school class.

The list of “ accomplishments “ of the “statistically data driven coach of our program “ could go on but I will stop here since Mark Progress is clearly on a league of his own..especially when it comes to arrogance and disrespect of his predecessors and BBN.

I wish someone would have texted this into his call in show to counter his numbers he was spewing over the airwaves.. would have loved to hear his response

For the media members that try to spin the situation as BBN having unrealistic expectations, this needs to be shared on all platforms. You can't dispute facts and numbers.

There are certain situations in life that you’re better off just shutting up. Pope really shouldn’t be making his case by comparing to someone that that got fired for said performance because he really isn’t head and shoulders better.
Cal wasn't fired for the performance. He was fired for talking to Arkansas without going through the proper steps as outlined in his contract. Cal was going to be back until he talked to Arkansas. That is a big distinction.

I don’t know what is worse. That he tried to spin this season as progress toward hanging a banner or that he cherry picked stats to make him look good. This season was an absolute failure. If not for a miracle halfcourt shot it would be looked at even worse. Own up to it and talk about fixing it. Don’t try to fool people with certain numbers when we all have eyes and watched this horrific year

It was Ohio State not Arkansas he got permission for Arkansas but not Ohio State. He contacted Ohio St while coaching in the tournament thinking he would get away with it

Lol, he's not disrespecting Cal. Anymore than you're disrespecting Pope.
Basically he’s disrespecting everything / everyone that care about UK basketball. He HAS failed here thus far and a fetus could see that he doesn’t have what it takes to be successful here. He had some tough choices to make about his future but he doubled down on staying and fighting a fight he CAN’T win. He knows that but he’s decided to screw the school / fans he supposedly loves so much. I get the money / greed angle but screw him.

That is false. He talked to Arkansas after we had been eliminated without getting the proper approval. He tried to use it as a bargaining chip but failed. He and MB had that tv interview a day or 2 before the news broke that he had talked to Arkansas. MB let him go after that so he accepted the position at Arky when his plan to use it for NIL failed.

Honestly who knows what of the Cal talking to the Hogs/OSU stuff is actually true. There's always two sides to a story, and the only one we've heard is UK/KSR.

He's a liar if he loved the University like he said he did he'd do the right thing and resign effective immediately. Like all the FACTS op stated he's just a terrible coach no getting around that.
And a complete fraud. From staged airport reunion videos to his constant referencing of UK being special to manipulate fans into overlooking his ineptness. The man understands an assignment which is to fake his way as long as he can to bilk UK.

What about the 35 point loss to Gonzaga ? Isn't that the biggest blowout loss UK has had since Vandy beat us by 41 way back in BCG's first year ? Or am I wrong ?

IMO cal knew what he was doing and this was the best way out for everybody. You can’t tell me he didn’t know what his contract restricted him to do.

Exactly. Cal provide UK and BBN with a gift. He knew what he was doing. He provided MB with an elegant way out if he MB didn’t want to continue with Cal.

Cal made as such as gave back MB all the leverage on his contract negotiations . that was a gift. MB misused it twice : one when he enforced that clause and let Cal go, second when he hired Mark Progress.

Yeah, but the disappointing thing is the way he is manipulating the data. If he was comparing the first two years of Cal to his first two years, or Cal's tenure at Kentucky to his tenure at Kentucky, I could respect that. At the very least, he should use two years to two years, not 2 years to 4 years. Why do you think he went back 4 years and not 2 years or 15 years? Why did he need that 4th year or stop at the 4th year? The guy is a fraud. I started questioning his coaching last year when we could not play defense and we were embarrassed on national t.v against Ohio State. I lost respect with him this year with the way he misled the fan base after the Louisville game with the pregame drama. Now, he just needs to go away. The worst Coach at Kentucky since 1930!!!

Year 1 was progress from where we were at after Cal left. I'll give him that.

Year 2 was NOT progress from Year 1. He's blending the 2 years together to mask the regression in Year 2, and then putting that next to a pile of steaming :poop: (the end of Cal's tenure) to make it look good (or at least not as bad as we all saw that it was) by comparison.

Recruiting failures between Year 1 and Year 2 set him up with a roster that was very vulnerable. A lot had to go perfect for that roster to work ... and not surpisingly, things went less than perfect. And the recruiting problems have continued into this year, with the high school class. So yeah, people are very worried about his ability to get players, not to mention his ability to build a stong identity and culture.

Yeah…..that was the reason why……. He had never done that before when he was winning? Cal drove up the price for years on Mitch that exact same way. This time though Kentucky had already had enough of mediocrity and ego that they cut him loose that was the only difference this time.

I never said he hadn't done it before but that doesn't change the accuracy of my post. Cal was coming back before MB found out he had talked to Arkansas without following the steps he agreed to in his contract.
