Do we need to have a conversation about Jan Jensen?

What exactly would you do against a rotation of four 6'4"+ players when the outside shots aren't falling. She can't shoot for them. The game was there for them to win, but we couldn't hit an outside shot or free throws. We deserved to lose, but I don't think it was because of Jan.
Did she not have a plan B or Plan C? Most folks knew this was not a good shooting team returning this year unless portal additions. I know it msut be a very difficult job being under a microscope, but that is why the big $'s are paid for a head coaching job.

I don't think there was a single substitution in the 2nd half.
Stremlow couldn't prevent multiple offensive rebounds in that half.
Meanwhile, Houston, who hustles her azz off every minute on the floor, never played after halftime.

WTF are the asst coaches doing on the be chif they're not offering suggestions???
Guess we will find out if they start leaving off-season

That’s not how coaching works. It involves BOTH roster construction and strategy/prep.

JJ hasn’t shown an ability to recruit perimeter talent nor coach/prep beyond forcing the post 10 different ways. Being one definitional because of your roster is a coaching issue.
She recruited a 5-star perimeter player from California and also lost a 3-point shooter with a season-ending injury.

I’d like to see her teams get out and run more. We were effective when we had that big 3rd qtr pushing the pace but then we just let the game turn into a slow paced half court game with zero easy baskets and continually forcing it into the post. And I think Jan is also to blame a bit for how tight we played both games. Way way too structured of an offense and just overall slow play. Let your kids play a bit.

Creighton played really well and were really well coached. Virginia wasn’t that great. They didn’t shoot well and turned the ball over more than Iowa. And Iowa was a turnover machine in this game.

I'd also say the team that lost to Creighton was more talented than this current team.

I really hope she comes up with a better offensive scheme. The offense is way too one dimensional and having Kylie and Taylor each play 48 minutes and give us zero offense along with crappy Ft shooting is what doomed us today. Virginia's guards over matched us. No answers today. Portal shooting/scoring guards should be at the very top of the shopping list.
When you only have one/two players that can shoot an open 10/15-foot jump shot that is a problem IMO

Disappointing end for sure.
That being said this team had limitations, especially once McCabe went down. Outside shooting needs to really improve next year, so you need to look at the portal and upgrade there.'
Ultimately you are looking at UCONN and UCLA for the title, so in the grand scheme we are just out a little earlier than I expected.
Deal needs to take a huge step next year for sure.
27 wins and the Hawks have some nice pieces for next year. This one hurts a little less today knowing the M are heading to the SW16
agree if all key players up their games next year

Oh, you're in big trouble now with the JJ fanboyz.

Very well thought out post.👍

Deal is a wing player. Needs to play the 3 in space and in transition. And LB recruited TM.

But yes losing TM and ER hurt.

JJ missing out on a couple of star perimeter players, including an Iowa star not far from Iowa City, is a huge red flag. Narrative about her style and ability to develop perimeter/wing talent will be a problem.

I don’t think Deal returns.

I assume given her high school accolades, Deal didn't come cheap.
She's due for a salary adjustment.

It's clear she is not "guard material".

They overachieved to get that 2-seed. But nobody wants to give credit for all the wins it took to finish 2nd in the Big 10, especially after a loss. Typical fan overreaction.

Virginia isn't an awful team. They have length and playmakers.
Yep they beat Duke and ND recently.

They have many McDonald's All Americans and fourth year players with a lot of tournament experience. The reddit founder (Serena Williams husband, I'm forgetting his name) dropped a giant bag of NIL money on the wbb program

That roster is much better than their wins this season

Jan did a lot with very little

Didn't Iowa lose to a tenth seeded Creighton in 2022 with 2 now WNBA players on the roster

The coach and the program did just fine after that

Iowa overperformed hugely this regular season

Michigan has 5 McDonald's All Americans and an Olympian on their roster

This loss wasn't due to Jan
That all was true until the last statement. This loss is all on Jan.

With their roster, they achieved more on the year than one could reasonably anticipate IMO. They beat several pretty good teams to get where they got. They were never elite, but they were pretty good on balance.

A disappointment today to be sure, but a good season overall. There are a number of "fans" showing out with their displeasure and criticisms that really need to get a life outside being a follower of other people playing games.

Fans expect good three point shooting in the 2nd half when the HC never substituted?

Granted, it was not good before that, but it sure as shiit isn't improving with "dead legs".

Journey should enter the portal and find a coach willing to utilize her skills...AND her effort.

Why would Deal leave? She got her chances, had a few good games and struggled in some games.

Journey gave us a huge boost in the first half. Someone should ask Jan about the second.

Last year they got boat races against Oklahoma, and this year they play 3 awful games in a row to end the season and crap the bed at home. The talent gap in women's basketball isn't as close as the men's is. Losing to a 10 seed at home is downright embarrassing. Even if they were overseeded you don't lose to a team like Virgina at home. Even without McCabe they should have won this game with all the missed free throws. Suspect subbing and poor gameplans has been the recipe for a Jan loss in big games.

Not good at all. Wonder who leaves. Hays and Mallegni will start.
The plays we ran the last two possessions of regulation were disgustingly bad.

This....

Completely different games. If you switch the teams, that Iowa team EASILY handles Virginia today.

Straight up fumbled an easy path to the sweet 16 today.

Oh well. On to the Men.

Upgrade athletes and shooting for next year PLEASE

No way you can put it all on her, but there's also no way you can't put anything on her. It was so clear that our girls had no legs under them the second half yet we weren't substituting. Also the plays she Drew up at the end of regulation I still can't believe what I witnessed.

I hope Jan is a great recruiter because I don't think she's a good X's and O's coach. She's going to need talent to overcome that.
Saw last night a team that is better because of the coach and at times with women she can hinder the team.

we will really see how good of a head coach she next few years. Because let’s be honest situation she inherited is about as good as it comes minus like UConn. Left with a talented roster and recruits. But we’ve seen in various college sports once the old coach is gone once their players graduate the success isn’t there and drops down a notch.

I just hope she doesn’t turn into Jan Mccaffery and never gets out of the first weekend.

It was clear there was no “play” at the end of regulation. Jan is good for trying to motivate via pep talk, not drawing up actual plays…

It ending with that terrible shot by Chit Chat was unreal.
I’m not sure what JJ could have drawn up honestly. She has no real plays or sets that don’t involve forcing the post as her 1st, 2nd, and 3rd option. Whether this is due to lack of coaching acumen or a sobering realization that no one outside of AH is a reliable scoring threat, it’s not good..
