One of my favorite players ever, came here because of Cal but then loved this place once he got here. This is a case of playing for the name on the back but then loving the name on the front.
Boogie and Wall have both done that well. I even see Wall still showing love to Washington. He's got a lotalty to him that is admirable. I feel like that's lost on the new generation

A lot of his decline here had to do with him not getting Acuff / Smith type players. Heck, even a guy like Thomas, or JJ Andrews for next year, is a better wing than he got his entire time at UK.

He may have lost motivation in coaching, but I think he'd get to a S16 no doubt in the '24 season with a team featuring Fland, Wagner, Richmond, and Knox (heck, he did it with them at Ark). Then this year, he brings back those guys (maybe Fland goes NBA with the Cal bump) with Acuff and Thomas and it's an elite UK team and trending up.
He also had Cyril and Quaintence in that class. The big guys in the middle was what that Arkansas team was missing. So I think he would have gone farther with them here than he did at Arkansas.

I agree with Boogie, but Cal is just as responsible for this state of Kentucky basketball as Pope is. He lost to Oakland with Reed Sheppard, Dilly and other NBA talent. He lost his fastball while on the UK sideline. He has somewhat found it again, but the PIGS more than likely are going to lose to Zona and 2 sweet 16 trips would not have the masses here very happy either.
It will be year 2056, and on this board I will be reading, "Cal is responsible for the state of Kentucky basketball because he lost to St. Peters and Oakland."

It is time to put Cal with Tubby and move on.

If we knew that Mitch was going to downgrade, I think we would have all kept Calipari. Let him finish out his career here. Watch him get guys like Jordan Smith Jr and Acuff. Just let him ride out to the sunset. Mitch did the program dirty when he downgraded.
One million percent truth. I was completely over Cal after Oakland. Like just absolutely done with him. But at that moment, had you said him or Pope...I'd have chosen to run it back with Cal. I'm sure some people blocked me on here the night the news broke.

That is the most accurate thing every put on this board. MJ has done a lot of damage to this program and fan base.
jones would call out cal regularly by name on twitter for things during games. he almost never did it with stoops and doesnt do it with pope. instead its mentioned in the 3rd person like "the staff". jones killed cal for his offense being dated....wanted a modern offense. pope's Xs and Os are amateur hour. santa clara can shut us down. not a peep.

my guess it all comes down to access. cal cut him off and out. stoops and pope didn't/don't.

That's just inaccurate. He killed Stoops for the offense non-stop the last couple years. He's been all over Pope all year long. On air and on Twitter. Hell, he gave him a D grade on air for the season and said the only reason it was an F is because Matt himself is a big nerd and a D is a complete failure. He said an F would be getting fired midseason or something like that.

Jones has called Pope out many times this season and Pope said when he was hired that if he screws up, places like KSR should call it out. Half of Rafters thinks MJ is a mouthpiece for UK and the other half believes he's running coaches away left and right. Both of those extremes are false. He's just a guy with a popular radio show. That's it. He doesn't have this unlimited power or something.

to be clear, I don't think Cal left because of Matt Jones. But Jones was insufferable about it. Cal had his fill and got zero support from Barnhardt.
One person's insufferable are another's brutally honest. I think it's semantics. Cal left, in large part, because he backed himself into a corner. Once he talked to Arky, Mitch was in control. Maybe the only quality decision he has made in personnel in the last 20 yrs. Then he pooped on that by hiring Pope. What caused Cal to talk to Arky? His resources had dried up, no doubt. In large part because of how he alienated the fanbase and boosters. That was a slow 3-5 year burn and there weren't enough wins to cover up the stench of some of the stuff going on.

cool. Listen, the topic is why would Demarcus Cousins have an issue with Matt Jones. The answer is because Jones was "brutally honest" or whatever you need to hear towards Cal.

Yeah I'm sorry. If you're going to do the "poor Cal" routine and pretend he didn't have support then we're just living in two different realities. And that's funny because this all happened within the last few years and we all saw it happen.

He has baby stepped around Pope all year to make sure he did not offend anyone. He blasted Cal for years. He only became critical of Stoops when it was over for Stoops.

Once again, this is inaccurate and it feels like you have an agenda. He's crushed Pope several times this season and has crushed Mitch in recent years as well. I don't know what you want Jones to say exactly but his shows are archived. Maybe listen once in a while?

This board will do its thing but I'm personality not into this 'two realities' mindset.

I think he got tired of all of "Kentucky basketball".. the AD, the media, the fans. I think he got tired of the microscope.

Because while he still has some coaching issues at Arkansas (that defense was nonexistent against KU late), he sure seems reinvigorated. Hes getting/keeping some more experience, theres more shooters, higher 3pt percentage. He seems to have corrected some things, like Wagner is on the bench finally.

You can believe what you want, just like I will believe what I believe. You can love on him. I have read his articles and I have listened to his show. He hated Cal. He loved Stoops and Marrow when they were frequently coming on his show.

You're believing some sort of alternate reality then and because I think you're incorrect doesn't mean I'm "loving" on anyone lol. I listen to the show and what you're saying is inaccurate. It was time for Cal to leave and he believed so too which is why he was "loving" on Ark behind our backs. He's gone and looked for a way out. Let that go. If you think a local radio host drove Cal out of town then that says more about Cal than anyone else. Your assessment of "baby stepping" around Pope isn't correct either. Jones has crushed him at times this season and went so far as calling him a jerk with how he treated Tom Leech at times after games. So yeah, I don't know what you want Jones to say exactly.

He crushed Cal at times and finally said it was time for him to go.
He crushed Stoops at times and finally said it was time for him to go.
He's crushed Pope at times and right now believes he should get a third year but said today next year could be make-or-break.

As bigs besides JQ and Cyril, I believe we could have retain Ivisic and UGonna .

Thiero, Richmond, Knox would have shared the 3 or 4.

we had Fland , Perry and Wagner and whomever Cal could added from portal as shooters….

include a Brea and another shooter and PG and that is an elite team.

I disagree.
He was out to get Cal and repeatedly attacked him.
He loved Stoops, but then went after him.
He has loved Pope, but will attack him once he knows he is done.

I wonder why Boogie is throwing shade at Matt Jones? I'd be interested to hear him expand on that.

Because boogie swings from the Cal strings. Lots in the Cal camp blame Jones for "making" Cal leave.

Pope hasn’t been a downgrade from Cal’s last four years——he’s been a steep upgrade.

That’s not an endorsement of Pope.

It’s the stark truth of how shamefully awful that infection of a head coach John Calipari was at the end of his tenure here, literally bilking us out of tens of millions of dollars in exchange for the honor of letting him insult us while he talked about his dogs and Little House on the Prairie while winning NO postseason basketball games.

Three NCAAT wins in two years is a huge upgrade from that.

What we should agree on is it wasn’t nearly enough of an upgrade. It definitely wasn’t.

But even if it had been a legitimate downgrade most of us would still have taken it to get out from under Cal by the end. Because it’s limited. And thanks to Uncle Mitch, Cal’s contract was virtually unlimited. Pope will be out after next season and as much as we love him for his playing days he’d have been out sooner if he hadn’t turned out to be an upgrade from Cal’s last four years.

Man that revisionist history is complete bull s**t

we were a top 15 team his last year.
The other year we had an early exit we were a 2 seed.

Mark pope will never have us in that position.

Calipari didn’t adjust his strategy with the incoming NIL changes. Thought freshman would do what they’ve done his entire career.
Hes clearly been taught that’s not the case and has a contender this year.

those pretending we were just awful are just haters and have personal hatred of cal. We weren’t. Truth be told we were a stud point guard from maybe cutting some nets.

He's telling the truth straight up. We've got a serious mess on our hands. I've got zero confidence that the President and the BOT will figure this one out either.

I think they need to hire an azzkicking AD before this tournament is over and HE needs to politely offer Pope an admin job, and hire an azzkicking BBHC. St Johns has one. Let's get this sht done.

THIS.FKN.NAILS.IT.

No one screwed Cal but Cal. No one made Cal leave, but Cal. No one blew through talent without much to show for it, except Cal. No one refused to change, but Cal.

He swallowed his foot with ALMOST EVERYONE in KY at the time, except his wife and kids, and could NEVER own up to it or truly make things right. He even doubled down after he left.

All of a sudden we can get past the 1st Round in a tournament! It's amazing! (That tells you how bad Cal was PERIOD.)
