I get off the board for like half an hour and come back and see Mark Pope; and Donovan not a serious candidate and no contact?

Is this real life?

Laughing Stock.

Mitch needs to step away now before he’s accused of being retarded.

Yes, I’m pissed. This is a ******* joke.

Hire Rick before Mark. Hire Beard, hire Pearl, hire like 20 other coaches before Pope. Jesus man. Seriously, is this real life?

We have just entered IU and UL territory. Good God Mitch? Oh my God man.

Aaaahajhhjnjjjnnbnbbnshshdhdjdjdnxn…!!!!

It’s one hell of a gamble. You’re basically praying that Pope has every attribute of a Hall of Famer but was held back by his program, and that taking over at Kentucky will unlock the success he’s never had.

I’m betting it doesn’t, but would LOVE to be wrong.

Dark days. Cal brought us into the darkness and it looks like we’re not finding the light for a while.

Dude it's called a dark horse candidate. But seriously it'd be cute/fun to call him His Holiness :)

Look in the mirror and tell us what you're seeing.

(and maybe check Hurley's record pre UConn while you're at it - or any of those other coaches you mentioned)

The embarrassing part is how some are treating this decision. Pope deserves our support...and don't give me the sh*t "I'll support Pope but not the administration."

Gonna laugh at most of BBN when Pope is slaying soon enough.
Not trying to be confrontational.

What evidence can you give me that Pope will be successful? And being an alum in not evidence.

How did we end up with Mark Pope? Did we seriously not even try to contact Donovan, Oats, or Pearl after Drew and Hurley turned us down? Mitch said that he was working to hire a PROVEN coach and he just hired the most unproven candidate of them all. I’ll support Pope and hope he kills it here but I am seriously questioning the rationale behind this decision.

Here’s the problem. There are TONS of dudes with records like that and only a select few blow up like Hurley. At Kentucky there is no need to take a flyer on one of those guys HOPING he’ll blow up. And doing so 3 days into your search when in all likelihood, you could have gotten an NBA coach with 2 college championships had you waited a week is unthinkable.

Nothing you can do but boo when you get a chance. Including his press conference. Which I will be there. I'm going to make sure he knows he's not wanted. You pussies may not but I will

Understand. There isn't a ton of evidence, obviously.

I think the below tweet sums up my feeling without typing a ton.

I do think it matters that we are bringing in a guy who BELIEVES in himself and UNDERSTANDS the history and importance of UK basketball. Pope is highly intelligent and learned under Pitino. He runs a 5 out offense and will get everything out of his teams.

He does have experience and has won some big games, albeit not in NCAAT yet.

Last thing I would say is that Hurley won games at a lesser percentage than Pope prior to getting to UConn. Sometimes you have to take a shot. If you weren't going to get one of your top choices, go get someone who has a high ceiling and low floor, to me that is Pope.

With all due respect, none of us know who we could or couldn't have gotten.

None of the insiders know either.

IMHO we should have bought out Oats. But that isn't my decision to make.

Give him a chance he’s a good young upcoming coach and he’s one of us now we don’t have to keep getting turned down by these jackasses that want $12 million dollars!!!

The odd thing is: He had a fantastic 1st year. COY worthy based on the injuries and talent we had. We still had some odd lapses of mental focus at times.. but it's not like that team had a ton more talent than this year. It was largely transfers that were sort of left out in the cold. It's not like we got 5 of the top10 transfers, I believe it looked a lot like this year's class in ranking.

So maybe because those guys were 5th year seniors mostly, that they sort of didn't need to be coached hard? But Pope still did some miraculous 2nd half coaching to come back in big games. And yeah, last year lost a lot of games, but the SEC was absurdly good. This year's team playing LAST year's schedule goes like 2-16.

So it's all very odd. I don't think hes' right for the job at this moment. He's got an awful lot to prove, and it can't just be wins anymore.. I need to see that he can coach defense, stop the slow starts, and get tough on his guys. But I also wonder what we can do with a better AD, having a GM, not having weird JMI issues, and some changes to his staff. I guess we will see one way or another next year.

Sadly, Cal's final years weren't good, And a lot of it because of him. But it got me thinking. Those final years can be summed up with 3 very unfortunate/odd/unlucky events.

1. Shaedon Sharpe doen't play/Ty and Grady are injured - Very odd, Cal probably should have handled Sharpe better. Result if this doesn't happen? Kentucky is likely a 1-seed and a strong favorite for another Final 4. We're not relying on a single undersized PG and 8 other forwards/centers.
2. COVID year shuts down a team that was a 2-seed and 1st in the SEC - Yes, everyone's year got shut down, but some teams lost more than others. Result if it doesn't happen? Odds on favorite to get an Elite 8 appearance.
3. Cal chooses DJ/Edwards over Reed/Dilly - This one is the most egregious, seemingly part out of spite as he grew frsutrated and part because he made promises to Dajuan and Edwards family. Result if he plays them? Kentucky goes into the tournament with the better players, on a team that at the time was one of the hottest in the nation. Odds on favorite for an Elite 8.

Ultimately, much of this are his problems, like playing the right guys, were his undoing. But 3 simple changes (or if the COVID year cancelled the BJ Boston travesty year), and his final 5 years could have look drastically different.

I'm sure that will get flamed. Not excusing the results, more so just find it fascinating. Three sort of anomalies that you didn't see happen in the previous 30 years of his career. If you can correct those three things, and not change a THING about his offense/coaching/lack of defense .. you're looking at potentially another 20 wins, no early flameouts and at least a few elite8s, with strong chance once of those years is a Final4.

According to Tim Walz, calling someone "Retarded" is mean. Oh wait, you talking about Mitch Barnhart? Perfectly okay then. And with his new "contract" to get a $1 million bag of cash for doing nothing after retirement, "thief" works also.

Isn’t interesting that everyone’s initial reaction to the Pope hire was 100% spot on, without exception?

A bunch of internet nobodies, some living in the backwoods of Kentucky and other places, knew this hire was an absolute pathetic joke, but the millionaire Administration brass who do this day in and day out, thought otherwise?

Basketball Bennies, my @$$📢

We weren't a "2 seed," we were a projected 4 seed on KenPom and 5 seed on bracket matrix: https://kenpom.com/index.php?y=2020 Everyone's whitewashing of that year astounds me. Let's conveniently ignore the Quad 4-D loss at home to Evansville....

Yes, had the wrong year. But still a 4-seed with a double Bye in the SECT, probably win a game or two there. 6 losses on the year, 13-2 over our final 15. Pretty solid year. So maybe that season tops out at a Sweet16/Elite8.. it was still a season where we were in the top25. Id sure rather have had the following season cancelled.

It's also worth noting that the Big10 did similar to the SEC last year: they took a lot of the seeds. Pushing other teams down. Its a very weird year for Kenpom when you look at it, they really favored the Big10 from a metrics standpoint.
