You won't. You just won't. The more the car is doing for you the more distracted you will let yourself get. It's just human nature.
I use my cruise daily......adaptive has its issues, but as long as you pay attention, you can tap the throttle a little bit to keep the sudden reactions of it a little at bay.......
B/w left lane drivers and those that can not maintain a constant speed, it's just infuriating.
What gets me, if you can afford to buy a 100k vehicle, learn to use your damn cruise control on the open highway

I'm finding less and less opportunities to use it on the interstate. Just seems to be more congested on average, with too many idiots for regular cruise to be useful.
I have adaptive cruise control but have not given it a chance yet. Based on how the brakes will slam on for no good reason when I am backing up with parking assist on, I am hesitant to trust it while going 70 with enough congestion that I can't use normal cruise control.
I actually turned it on yesterday for the first time and drove 61 between tunica and Cleveland with it.
not terrible there but in heavier traffic it sucks
I honestly think this is why many left lane drivers are so bad. They go fast until they catch someone and then just go the same speed.
amazing the number of people I see who go to pass and then ride next to the car on the right for 5 miles.
I use adaptive cruise control.
What I’ve noticed about it:
1. It can’t tell that a vehicle is in the turn lane and not in the same lane as me 99 percent of the time…
2. It’s good about slowing down so that you don’t tailgate the driver ahead of you but with that said…
3. I prefer to not use in cruise control in heavier traffic.
All in all, I like it
1 - This is a deal breaker for me.
2 - This is never a problem for me because I'm actually looking at the road when I'm driving. And it leave too much space so in traffic people are continually cutting in front of you and slowing it down again until it leaves enough space for the next driver to cut in front of you.

All in all, why is it you like it?
I think this is more of an indication of problems with human drivers. In heavy traffic, when a train of cars in the left lane is slowly but surely surely passing cars in the right lane, if you leave a safe amount of space between you and the person in front of you who is also passing, you will inevitably have some jackass try to pass you on the right.
Granted this is usually caused by some one somewhere up the line in the left hand lane not simply passing and getting into the right lane so even faster passing traffic can then pass them. But still a stupid and ******** move to respond by weaving in front of people if they leave anything more than a car length and a half between them and the next car.
Encapsulates why I don't like Adaptive cruise control. I use standard cruise control on the highways pretty much at all time outside of heavy traffic. I keep it 8-10 mph over and I always get back in the right lane after I pass.
Also, while we are talking driving/vehicles my other pet peeves on newer vehicles is a push button or twisting knob gear shifter. GTFO with that trash, old school column shifters are far superior. Also, greatly dislike the massive ipad screens going in all cars now. give me a small screen for carplay/navigation then buttons/knobs for AC controls, seat heaters etc. Driving my wifes car down the highway and want to turn the seat heater on or adjust the AC? gotta go through the damn ipad screen for that involving a few more touches/eyes away from the road than the trusty knob or button.
Mine had tweaks in the adaptive cruise settings. I put it on the slowest accelerating setting and the least aggressive brake setting. Works really well.
My biggest complaint about adaptive cruise is that it does nothing to notify you that it's slowed down if you come up behind someone going a little bit slower. It's all too often I'm riding along with it set on 75 and realize for the last few minutes I've been doing 65 behind someone slower. I wish it would just do something simple like change the color of the speed or the background on the display just as a "hey you, we're slowing down now in case you'd rather make a move"
It would be for a lot of folks, but I’ve trained myself to be on the lookout in those situations by preparing to manually accelerate when needed…
LOL I know… People always want to be in a rush and they wind up slowing traffic…

It’s something that largely works, and it wouldn’t be used for years if nitpicky folks wanted something perfect
So bring it out and fine-tune it even more…

Too expensive, I suppose. It requires more sensors, like radar, to detect other traffic.
Yes.....my adaptive cruise is weird. And yes, I would trust self-driving cars more. Certainly, would be an adjustment period, but Elon Musk has really made some impressive strides in his self-drivers. Nothing unusual about that. Not all adaptive cruisers or self-drivers are the same. Lot of difference between different brands.
