When it comes to Kansas & Kentucky and Ben thinking about both jobs:

* Massive salary
* Massive NIL resounces
* Massive fan base

Imagine what Ben would do with the $22M NIL budget that Kentucky had.
It's why it's tough to say what they will do in that situation. As some have said, sometimes it's not about the money. I think that is a risky position to rely on though. I'd prefer the "it may not be about the money, but money isn't the reason you will be leaving if you choose to do so" approach. How much you pay someone is something the school can control.

You'll have to imagine it, cuz the kid who grew up a Hawkeye fan ain't goin' anywhere. And besides, as I noted earlier, Iowa is in the Sweet Sixteen. Kentucky and its massive NIL and fan base is sitting at home after being drubbed. Why would Ben take a step down? :cool:

Stirtz didn't have a great game for sure, but it looked like Florida game planned to shut him down, which they were largely successful at doing. They just didn't count on the rest of the team being able to pick him up. Since McCollum ran a plan to spread the floor and keep the Florida bigs from clogging up the lane, we were able to have a lot of success under the basket. I'm betting if Florida switched things up to better protect under the basket Stirtz would have had an easier time getting into a rhythm. But it is what it is. Sometimes, you have to be the decoy to get the win.
Stirtz was 0-9 from three. Most were good looks. He just missed. He even missed a FT. Before the tourney started, Stirtz said he didn't like the NCAA basketball they were using. He's gone on to have two of his worst shooting games of the year. The basketball may have thrown him off. He's likely to make the adjustment and be back on track for Thursday.

Look at the High Point roster. Hell, look at Siena. Iowa just beat #1 Florida, the defending national champions, with a bunch of kids from NE Missouri-Drake-Robert Morrris. NIL is overrated. (And don't forget what Indiana football did, led by a coach and a bunch of players from James Madison.)

NIL is overrated?

* Ben said Iowa couldn't afford a big in last year's transfer portal.

* Ben said that Bennett & Tavion would have gotten A LOT more money had they gone elsewhere. Imagine where we'd be without those 2.

Iowa plays #1 seed Florida, defending national champions, in front of a Florida home crowd in Tampa, Stirtz has a bad game, Banks--who earlier in the season made 30 straight FTs--misses five, the refs get Florida back in the game at the FT line while Iowa's bigs are in foul trouble, and Iowa just wins anyway. I mean what can you say? Impose your will. Just win. That's what Ben's teams do. Now the world is finding out how that works.

when you look at all that Iowa had to overcome, it really is a miracle they pulled that off.

if I had said Bennet would go 0-9 from three and Tavion would miss 5 FTs, I don't think many on here would think Iowa would win.

If they don't, that's coaching malfeasance of the highest order. I think they do practice it, but just because you practice it doesn't mean you can execute it against a team like Iowa.

I was surprised their guard thought he had enough time to drive under the basket, make a pass, and have their big put it in. To not even get a shot off....damn....

True. Also remember the MASSIVE egos he'd have to deal with too.

You have to be a pretty solid coach to get those jobs.... yet guys are still failing to make the sweet 16 with a MASSIVE talent level advantage over most teams.

I don't see Ben going anywhere. Hopefully that's the case.

Great points. I don't think he leaves any time soon either but he has to be a bit jealous of the NIL budgets & rabid fan bases of Kentucky & Kansas.

Iowa State fans never thought Matt Campbell would leave; the right job came along & he couldn't pass up the Penn State salary, NIL budget, massive resources, 100,000 seat stadium & rabid fan base.

If Stirtz had been 2-9 or 3-9 from three and Tavion had not missed 5 FTs, we win a bit more comfortably. ;)

Just a helluva job by Ben & his staff.

Can you imagine being an assistant and learning from Ben? I wonder how long it will be before one of his assistants leaves for a head coaching job at some level (mid major, etc).

Kansas might open up this year as the rumors are that Self is going to retire for health reasons. Kentucky also has a good shot of opening up. You have to believe that Ben will be getting a call from them if those things happen. At this point, Iowa needs to do whatever they can to make sure he stays. FWIW, he's an Iowa guy and I've heard that his wife doesn't want to move again but there comes a point where you can't say no to a massive check.
It’s not 20 years ago and we play in the richest conference

did Matt have lifelong connections to Iowa state? Did he coach in the richest conference? Is Iowa state historically anything at football?

The part of the postgame presser that isn’t being reported on very much that I’ve seen is when Ben indicated that he found something, a tweak, that would work against Florida’s defense at 2 or 3 in the morning and implemented it the morning of the game! It might look the same to us, but it wasn’t the same offense Florida saw on tape. He’s obsessed with winning.

Neither of those teams are in the Sweet 16. We are. I'd say maybe they're just a little jealous of us right now.

Iowa may be in a rich conference BUT Iowa is not rich.

The Iowa athletic department only pays roughly $3.5M to $4.0M directly to MBB players via revenue sharing.

The rest of player income comes from rich alumni and lets face it, Iowa doesn't have many of those.

Ben said bigs are expensive & Iowa couldn't afford a big from last year's transfer portal.

Speaking of history, Iowa hasn't been to a Final Four in 46 years. You can't say that about Kentucky & Kansas.

Ben is begging the Iowa fans to come to Carver & watch his team play; he wouldn't have to do that at Kentucky & Kansas.

Just sayin'.

The play was designed for Xaivian to drive to the basket, go up for the shot, make the shot, or draw contact for a possible foul. Our defense didn't give him the opportunity to just lay it up. At the last instant, he tried to flip it to Thomas, but time ran out.

Fran…. I watched most of the game tonite… please advise me on how the officiating screwing UIowa? I never saw it. The “double tech” was rightly called..Iowa was super aggressive in the boards tonight and given the size difference of the teams, the calls were certainly reasonable. I thought the game was fairly officiated… and fairness is all you can hope for any more. Bitchin’ about “officiating” is all too often a knee jerk reaction to a random call.
I assume you're joking. The Florida bigs were shoving Us in the back on mini rebounds and that late call on the Miss free throw was almost as criminal as all of the out-of-bounds calls they gave Florida that we had to waste reviews on. Florida should have had us shooting free throws before they were both halves.

And what did it get them? And Iowa St who you claim is backed by their billionaire is not much above us. But kudos to Ben who we know has definitely done way more with less than any team on here.

Upon further review, "Mike Frank" has 82 followers; everyone is calling him out, saying he made the numbers up.

The clock doesn’t mean jackshit in that situation. You trying to say there can’t be a flagrant after the clock hits zero’s? They missed that call, plain and simple.
There can be but “after time expires” gives the ref a legit out not to call anything, too.
