Did Oweh save Mark Pope’s job

I think he is probably getting a year three either way, though if we get blown out tomorrow I would say there's a one in three chance the new AD replaces him. If he beats Iowa State tomorrow he is 100% guaranteed to be here next season no matter who the AD is
Nah…we get beat by 30 tomorrow and he still gets a third. I say that largely because I think it’s true and largely because I think the AD hire is an internal job. And largely because Mitch will still be lurking.

Kinda crazy how this board created a scenario out of thin air that there was a chance Pope was getting fired next week or something. It's up there with believing that he was going to resign out of shame and walk away from this job and millions of dollars.
richie, saul and ortho the bug Dr. pushed it HARD all season. Immature drivel.

This was not created by the board, this is a national basketball blog that talks all schools. This video simply tells what they think of Popes coaching job. Not the opinions of the OP.

Here’s why he’s getting a third year. Put simply, Internet forums are not the board of directors or members of the athletic department.
Translation…He shouldn’t have been hired in the first place. Those that hired him are being patient and hoping like hell the brand carries him beyond what his track record tells everyone he’s capable of.

Did you see Mich yesterday when Oweh hit that shot? He knows he has egg on his face and it was 2.6 seconds from getting worse.

There are plenty of teams in the history of the basketball that have tons less talent than this team that is still dangerous because of there execution.
I agree with that 100% but I’ve been consistent about it far earlier than just this year while most of you all complained about recruiting even though we have had as much or more talent than most of the teams we lost to. Obviously, we would probably have very different rationales as to exactly why we lost those games. I just don’t see how some of y’all can have it both ways — bang the drum over lack of talent and also that Pope has failed as a tactician. We were a mid-level NCAA tournament team, obviously far below Kentucky standards, but trying to have cake and eat too makes no sense for how the team performed. If you aren’t the type to believe non-coaching aspects caused the lower performance, you’d be left with something like this IMO, considering most of you lump roster construction in with recruiting as well:

Option 1:
Tactics: B
Recruiting: F
Results: C-

Option 2:

Recruiting: D-

Option 3:

Call it whatever you want. Think we all agree about the resume but once he was hired, it’s his job to lose

I wasn't happy Owehs prayer was answered.
Oh wow. I missed this the first time I read your post. From now on I’ll only converse and discuss with Kentucky basketball fans. You admitted you are not a fan with that post. Therefore, you’ve made it to the “fake fans” block list. It’s new and it’s you, baby. I shouldn’t have to be doing this — this is a Kentucky basketball fan site and there are people on here admitting they don’t cheer for Kentucky to win. You shouldn’t even be permitted here. Bye.

Oh okay then lmfao...yeah see I want to win long term which means I want pope coaching Colorado st and UK to hire a winner

could really care less about a buzzer beater to survive Santa Clara only to get battered in the second round

I don’t disagree. My worry has always been he will do “just enough to keep his job”. That scenario could play out far longer than 3 yrs. Sadly. I think anyone with a clue about his actual performance as the coach can see he’s out over his skis on all this. Completely discount his history as a coach. Just OBJECTIVELY breakdown his performance. Not the “end result”, but the actual processes. It’s super concerning, but again, probably bare minimum enough to continue to keep the job.

It doesn’t matter if he beats ISU. How many of us have watched Michigan, dUKe, Florida, UConn and just dreamed of it being us? A win over ISU and a S16 doesn’t change that. 16 losses in two yrs. 5th and 9th in the SEC. Too many blowouts to count. The process matters. Hopefully year 3 changes those things, but I don’t live in a world where hope is a great strategy.

I fully believe he will have to make a deep run or he will get ran off. I’m not extremely happy with all of his coaching decisions either if I’m honest. I think he will do great though if he adapts and fixes some things. Everything you said is fair though.

For all the dweebs who keep saying he's getting a third year no matter what can you tell us why? Based on what track record? Certainly it's not because there's any recruits coming in because there's none...I just don't get it.

Oh right he played on the greatest team ever in 96 so we owe him a third year? Great double down on the only dumb reason he's here to begin with that is just perfect
Because Mitch doesn’t retire until like June/July.

There is no reason beyond he played here sorry. There's no recruiting or track record of winning to speak of
That's exactly why he should have NEVER been hired in the first place. However, he's checked off a lot of boxes to not be fired in year three. And yes, because of that, the program will continue to tank.

Didn't he do that this season? JQ wasn't injured, he was coming off an injury. Lowe was injury-prone. It's on the guy's to try and avoid injuries.
Someone on the coaching staff probably should have told the boys to make sure not to go too hard during the Blue/White scrimmage to ensure no one gets hurt lol.

Agreed. My fear is just that the powers that be are waiting for that deep run still in year 5 or 6.

Oweh hooked Lowe's arm to keep him from getting a loose ball and caused the dislocation. So he can have credit for that too.

I’m still not buying that he gets fired after next year. I think it’ll depend heavily on who the next AD is and how deeply Mitch Barnhart is still in the athletic program. All bets are off if we end up with the JMI queen as our AD. But we’ll have a lot more problems than basketball if that happens.

Lol the pathetic fans, who want pope fired, some who actively root against us, not fans. Hurley turned us down, oats turned us down. Who were you going to get? That year most big named coaches stepped down and some others have emerged after pope was hired.

The recruiting is due to us still actively having 11 players on this team. We also had lots of injuries throughout the season not including jq. Jq was a risk we should have gotten someone else instead.
Lowe I don't think missed a full season before so.

I never wish I was duke, etc, calipari stopped trying and we had to fire him. Duke is a bunch of floppers who are like the suck ups in class.

Injuries aside. Have you watched our offensive and defensive sets this year. We still don’t even have plays to get the ball inbounds against the press. (Cost us the Auburn game). Everyone including the media has acknowledged the substitution patterns, lack of timeouts, no inbounds plays that have scored. Pope hasn’t done a good job coaching this year. In the comeback wins, everyone acknowledges that the reason our team came back is they abandoned the game plan and went playground ball with DA and Oweh. Pope has been down double digits at halftime more than any coach in KY history. Plus he has been blowout more that any UK coach in history.

Lol your boy cal lost against Evansville, unc- whatever, oakland and many more. Lots of teams got blown out this year. Yeah his team management wasn't great but you and lots of pretend fans on here aren't real fans. Calipari had 1 tourney win since 2020.... We lost our pg for the year and when he did play he played injured

You don’t know me. I was the most vocal on this board about getting rid of Cal. That being said I’d take him in a minute over the travesty we have now.
