What does our basketball NIL budget need to be with Paris as coach?

I really don't see a path for SC to have a big jump in NIL or giving in general. What money SC has needs to be spent wisely.

Any increases we could make would probably be matched or exceeded by other teams in the SEC, so even if we bump up our NIL somehow, I don't really see much we can do to change our NIL status in the conference.

Exactly. And that plays into my fear that reducing investment in WBB and transferring those funds to other sports will not result in improvement in those other sports.

If SC abolished WBB and funneled all the money into football, I'm not sure it would make much of a difference. Throughout the history of SC football, there have been plenty of times where SC had the same resources as every one of their rivals and they have never really been anything more than mediocre. Even the Spurrier glory days didn't result in a championship of any kind and that glory was very fleeting and ended with shame when Spurrier quit on the team mid season.

Putting WBB money into men's basketball or baseball might have more of an impact. Those sports see more movement of the needle with increases in funding.

I think Donati and the BOT are perfectly fine with SC being a WBB, Equestrian and Softball power. They know the football fans will keep sending in money for poor to middling results and that money will fund everything else. MBB is going to see a change. Paris is too bad, even by SC standards, to keep around unless he pulls a miracle out of his hat next year. If Beamer can win 7 games this season, he will be safe. Mainieri will probably retire and make replacing him easy on Donati. Baseball has nowhere to go but up at this point.

Seems like softball is off to a rougher start this season than anticipated, although not nearly as rough as baseball.

I say keep funding appropriately those sports which are winning, and raise funds to aid those which are not winning.

Your philosophy is probably ideal, but the pool of funds is finite. If it were as easy as raising more funds for teams that aren't winning, it would have already been done by SC and everyone else.

The big question is, will money really fix the problem?
Whatever South Carolina can pull together, most of the top programs can match. I don't mind players getting paid, but I don't support them making more than the university president!

Today's college athletes are employees, not student athletes. They should sign binding contracts with performance standards. If they don't produce, they should be held accountable.

Universities support too many sports programs. Abolish Title IX and cut ancillary sports teams. Big time college athletics is a business, not a charity. Most people cannot or refuse to define what a "woman" is today. Why do we need Title IX to protect someone we cannot or refuse to identify.

South Carolina should keep baseball, football, men's basketball, and women's basketball. What value do the other teams add? The rest of the athletes can play club sports and intramurals.

Might as well sign minor league affiliation contracts with NBA and NFL teams....

College teams are minor league teams for the NBA and NFL. College players can earn more, and many do, with NIL than NBA Developmental League players. Many college athletes and their families admit that the "student athletes" are looking for a "bag" of money.

I don't like the professionalization of college sports, but today's major college basketball and a football players are not amateurs and should be tested as such.

Signing minor league affiliation contracts with NBA and NFL teams formalizes today's reality.

Well, actually, athletic scholarships are one-year renewable deals and has been the case for many years. Slightly different, but still somewhat related to NIL. NIL and not having to sit out a year if transferring to another school does give the players (um, students) a lot more clout.

Serious question: What happened to the guaranteed 4-year scholarships that were essentially made mandatory a few years back by those who were wailing and gnashing their teeth because a student-athlete could have his/her scholly non-renewed after any given year (and for any reason) and they deemed this "unfair"? It became a hot recruiting topic at one point.

I know that this was a hot issue for Bobby Dodd, and one of the reasons Georgia Tech made the decision to leave the SEC over 60 years ago.

Even though athletic scholarships are one-year renewable deals, he felt that, excluding egregious behaviour by his recruits, he was honour-bound to make it a four-year deal and ensure that they graduated. Apparently, few of Dodd's SEC colleagues shared the same sentiment.

This was a lot more recent than that and it seemed to disappear as a topic when NIL became a reality. So, does anyone know if they are currently one-year-only agreements or is the 4-year deal still available?

Has to be within the past 10 years.
