How warm is Hubert Davis's seat?

I know they were without their best player. But blowing a 56-37 lead should not happen.

I could see them trying to go after Oats, Golden or May.

They just extended him last year. Is their AD buddies with Brainfart or something? Why in the world did they extend him? And here we are making fun of Hubert and he beat us at Rupp! I believe UNC's NCAAT run a few years ago was a fluke but at least he made a run. I just can't see Pope winning 4 or 5 games in a row against good teams. He is way too inconsistent.

That team was actually pretty loaded with RJ Davis, Caleb Love and Armando Bacot. But, the real difference maker was Brady Manek. He was picked up in the transfer portal and became the guy who had consistency and could hit the 3. Once he graduated and Love transferred, UNC didn't even make the tournament the next season.

Hubert's best season after that was a Sweet 16.

Hubert was one bad half away from being UNCs Tubby. If he wins that title n 2022 they are stuck with him for a long time. He didn't, so I think they can move on faster.

FYI, tubby is a much better coach than Hubert. I'm only referencing those first years as going far with a lot of the former coached players as a comparison. Nothing else. And winning a title buys u leverage and longevity. As it should.

He’s very similar to Pope honestly imo
I am not yet convinced of that. Pope took UK to a Sweet 16 last year matching the best season Davis had in his last 4 years. To date, Pope hasn't yet missed the tournament (Davis did) and Pope has yet to lose a Round of 64 game (Davis missed 2).

Before you say, "What about the FF Davis achieved in his first year?" He had a LOADED team that year with Love, Manek, RJ Davis and Bacot. The very next year he didn't make the tournament. Let's see how this plays out before we compare the 2.

Tubby was one move away from being a 2/3 time champ. Embracing AAU ball, that’s all he had to do was use the Kentucky brand and scour AAU and deal with handlers. Tubby was a high school coach in a college coaches body. Crazy thing is talking with him last year at the BBM event I don’t think he regrets it at all. He had principles and wasn’t going to cave to it.

He was right, moving to AAU and taking kids out of high schools was the first death strike of college basketball. No protection, no fundamentals, strike one.

Pope has been a head coach for 12 years without a single tournament win, 63% winning %, no conference titles, and underwater against top 25 teams. lol. Pope didn’t just start coaching.

Hubert is also a waaay better recruiter than Pope.

Both suck, but at this point you’d have to take Hubert. I mean he beat him head to head at his house too. But neither are UNC nor Kentucky good, but at least they got a banner banner out of him. We got a lot of talk and a horrible coach.

Just meant they are both underwhelming former players at blue bloods that were head scratchers when hired. Honestly John Scheyer was similar but has obviously proved to be deserving. Pope has no FF to hang on so hopefully he can turn this around next year.

They had Caleb Wilson when they beat us.

I literally and figuratively do not give a damn who they had.

We had them beat and threw that game away, in Rupp Arena - to an historic Blue-Blood rival. It’s one of many Pope-like losses that erode every ounce of belief I may have once had in his ability. You DO NOT lose that game…to Hubert motherflipping Davis in freaking RUPP ARENA.

Sick and freaking tired of being humiliated by Mark Pope. He needs to get his **** together and he needs to start today.

I think Hubert is awful and hope he stays atUNC for another decade

Yea it’s like asking which turd smells sweeter. Scheyer is different than Pope. Had Duke hired Dawkins like they were thinking about doing (I think it was Dawkins?) then yea that would have been a Pope move. But coach K shut that down and told them you have to hire Scheyer. Coach K basically remained in control and led him through it.

Pope had a record and it was bad one and it spanned 12 years. Hubert was a stupid hire, but they only hire inside. There was no one else. Out of all 3, Kentucky had a prior record with Pope to look at, and had been hiring outside since Sutton. Makes the UK / Pope hire by far the worst to me.

Good to see their fans are as delusional as us. This is about the 100th post mentioning Hurley and Golden. Some other choices I keep seeing are Brad Stephens and Mark Pope. Well the Pope thing is me replying to them pretending to be a UNC fan and donor trying to make that happen lol

Even his championship game was just a mediocre team getting HOT at the right time. Recall just 2 weeks before Selection Sunday that year UNC was on the bubble (many considered them as the Last-4-Out).

Not warm at all, and we better be grateful for that, because if he was having a Pope type season, their AD, unlike UK’s, would swoop in and grab May or Golden, while UK is allowing Pope to have another subpar season next year, knowing there’s zero impact players committed or returning.

I mean , he’s already missed the tournament once and would have last year if UNC’s athletics director wasn’t the chairman of the selection committee, then goes out in the first round.

Tubby was TONS better. No comparison.
I think you're looking at this at a narrow lens. Yes, Tubby never missed the tourney. Tubby has that over Hubert. But comparing Davis to Pope is also a bad comparison. Pope can't land recruits, at least Hubert can. Remember, they stole Caleb Wilson from us.

Maybe a more fair comparison is that Davis is a Hybrid Version of Tubby and Pope.

How? He played for the school he’s coaching? That’s the only similarity I can find.

Yes, both former players with rather vanilla bland personalities that play an uninspiring brand of basketball. Had you watched the UK/UNC game this year as a nonpartisan fan you would be left thinking “these teams both kinda suck and play uninspired”.

I remember when they went to the national championship game his first season. Brady Manek, the transfer from Oklahoma, was very important to that run and hit a lot of clutch threes. The next season they were returning everyone but him and they thought Northwestern transfer Pete Nance would be a good replacement even though he was an interior power forward and not a stretch four like Manek. They didn't make the tournament the next season and lack of consistent three point shooting was the reason.
