I never wanted Fred fired, but I thought he was content to just kind of coast. He upped his game and upgraded his staff, and surprised me too.

Will people be saying the same thing about Rhule in a couple of years? Let’s hope so.
I do not think we will be saying the same thing about Matt the Hat in a couple of years and here is why. Fred at a P4 school proved he could win by taking Iowa State 4 out of 5 seasons to the NCAA Tourney. He never had a losing season, and he had a winning conference record at Iowa State (49-39). Fred could legitimately say "Here is what I have accomplished in the past". Matt the Hat was only somewhat successful when he was at the Group of 5 level when he was at Temple where he won 55% of his games. At the P4 level he is 38-39 at Baylor and Nebraska and his combined conference record at both schools is 23-31.

By year 4, I was ready to pull the plug on Fred. I was wrong. What a mistake that would have been.
He was a horrible recruiter with Matt Abdelmassih. Horrible. Matt recruited individual stars that didn’t fit the system.

It was justified to want to fire him then- but Fred adjusted his staff and the results are clear.

I was getting impatient too. But once he figured out to quit getting ball hogs and prima-donnas and put together team players that fit his philosophy, he got it right.
if only Rhule could figure this out

I forgot about Matt Abdelmassih. Did you see where Pitino fired him during the season this past January?

Many were, and they were wrong about his son Sam Hoiberg as well. And they were wrong about Keisei Tominaga as well. And many, many other things...you could say they are the king of being wrong. King_WRONG, even.

No. I didnt' see that but no surprise. Guys like him get replaced with NIL.

I remember arguing with the local morons on this board that he was a terrible recruiter. Some how they felt that because he brought in 4 stars he was great...even if they didnt fit the system at all.

Beating Troy to get to round of 32 isn't like an amazing feat. They had a very soft schedule and started hot but were 6-6 in their last 12. The legacy of Fred will come down to the next few games. If he can beat Vanderbilt and get to the top 16 I think this will lock him in to be here until he retires..if he loses to Vanderbilt though that basically means they are barely a top 25 team and he is probably destined to be fired eventually, and the haters won't really be wrong. A special year for husker fans for sure, as we have never experienced what all of power schools have experienced until now.

If Huskers lose to Vanderbilt they may not even finish in the top 25, we should expect Rhule to finish a season in the top 20, that shouldn't be a miracle but right now it seems to be such. Now if we beat Vanderbilt and compete with Florida or Iowa in the sweet 16 that would make it a really special season.

At the point many (foolish) people wanted Fred fired, he'd notched just 40 wins in his first four years, and only 24 in the first three. Zero winning seasons. In basketball. They discounted what he did at previous stops, and focused on his record here, and almost fired the best coach in our history, even though he had a strong historical resume (in context), and was taking over a badly struggling job in need of a full rebuild. While his first hires and recruits weren't ideal, he adjusted, and by year 4 had stabilized the program, following with two tourney bids in the next three years and a Sweet 16 bid. Rhule is quite a bit ahead of that 3 year pace, increasing wins every year, guiding us to back to back bowls and two winning seasons after a 9 year string with only one winning season.

Patience is a virtue.
