The whole system is so stupid. The State could get the same amount of revenue or more with the vendors ordering directly from the producer or distributor. The real question in my mind is what politically connected individual or family is making easy money with the present system?

And I can't find fault with the lawsuit. This is what courts were made for.

I personally applaud the lawsuit, the legislators have been skimming for way too long. Hire a private company to do it and tell them up front they are constantly audited, then audit the original audit with another company

Just let them order liquor the same way every other business does. Use capitalism and the state get the 17 out of the way.

It's not supposed to you dubmass. The state should regulate rather than compete for services.

I agree they shouldn't be in the liquor business. It's nothing but a vestige of the Baptists trying to control things, except they found out they could tax it.

You don't even realize what you're arguing about.

The liquor stores oppose that full blown deal. They know it opens up big box competition and online sales.

It comes down to "is the state doing what's best for the consumer or are they looking to protect their control and the liquor stores' control of it". The pricing in MS is some of the highest you'll find because the mom and pop stores control the pricing. I've gotten to where I make the drive to Louisiana to buy mine now. It's half the price many times.

I think it's mainly taxes. The state warehouse does something like an 18% markup I think and then you pay taxes on top. You get ****** pricing in podunk places without competition because they don't have volume to spread out overhead and there's not much competition to put pressure on them. But it's mainly high taxes.

Everybody is out for themselves, just look at college football.

The mom and pop liquor stores have a sweetheart deal, I can't blame them. But eventually gravy trains run out when people get sick of it and complain loud enough.

Why do I just assume that somehow the estates of ole Mississippi politicos like Ross Barnett, Brad Dye & Buddy Newman are still getting kickbacks?

It will be interesting to see if the lawsuit survives a motion to dismiss. Liquor stores do not have any contractual relation with the vendor. Third party beneficiary claims are difficult to sustain.

Hmmm....opening MS to business. I love mom and pops but sometimes to advance and grow you have to put on big boy pants. If that goes against people's "running the mom and pops" out of business feelings then quit b+tching about lack of growth in MS. You can't have it both ways.....a trade off has to be made to develop. Some may not want to develop and that's fine.....there are pros and cons to both. It's just silly to want growth but be against competition.

2 things in MS that make a lot of money with state gov't help, liquor stores & churches and there's one on every other corner. I know 3 people who own liquor stores & 2 people I grew up with who became "preachers"

They all have large homes, expensive cars & lavish lifestyles.

Alcohol sales in general are way down due to this generation just not consuming as much alcohol products and the amount of people that are smoking marijuana and use of it’s derivatives.

I have two close friends that are/were liquor reps. They will both tell you the state liquor warehouse has been disfunctional and missed managed for a long time.

Alabama has state owned liquor stores and are hard to find. At least they use to be.

We operate in a mixed economy, not capitalism.

I agree competition can be, and often is, good.
It's just worth clarifying that we in fact operate in a mixed economy...which allows for competition.

This is the correct answer.

Along with the fact that Louisiana has some of the lowest liquor taxes in the country, so it's a rough comparison.
