Honestly this is not a bash Pike, player development, recruiting or any kind of loaded question. It’s an honest ask. Why can a Miami, who can’t have more NIL fund 6-7 efficient shooters (around 40% or higher) and we always struggle to find even 1 or so? Maybe a lesson to learn. I’m genuinely curious. Maybe someone knows.

A lot of schools were saying the same thing about Rutgers and Pike in 2020 when he won coach of the year. Sometimes its great coaching and recruiting , sometimes it’s luck, sometimes its all three. If it was easy to figure out, everyone would be doing it. One thing I’m sure of, outside of a few special coaches, it never lasts long.

Miami is the Indiana football this year. Every fan, booster, and school will be saying “how come they could do it, we should easily be able to do it then” but yet they cant. Coaching coaching coaching. Ridiculous ball movement. Every shot wide open

Steve Pikiell has never been B10 coach of the year.

The lack of awareness about fans just continues to show and it is why fans are clueless about coaching.

Travis Steele is the Miami of Ohio coach and is now "stuck there", because he was provided very good NIL and resources at Xavier in the Big East and blew numerous games and had poor roster construction......despite recruiting Top 150 players all over the place, like Desmond Claude, who was a RU recruiting target and is now on his 3rd school (Xavier, USC and now Washington).

We have Steele playing the weakest OOC schedule of any at large bid earner and essentially going undefeated.....and chucking a lot of 3s works in the MAC......because its the MAC.....

Steele was run out of Xavier on a rail and maybe is a better coach now, but he didn't get anything done at Xavier......so Miami of Ohio plays in a 1st 4 game, when they probably should have been a 10 seed matched up vs a 7 seed.....instead they get SMU, who should not have been in the field and lost their 2nd or 3rd best player in the last 3 weeks.....and SMU went 1-5 down the stretch without Edwards.....

The committee somehow bought this lie, that Edwards would somehow be able to play this week, but he sat out vs Miami and "Wow, Miami OH wins, they know offense".....LMAO

They played a SMU team that would be in the NIT or Crown, if Edwards missed the whole season, so Miami gets a victory lap??? LOL

Cmon people, it is a 1st 4 game, they didn't beat anyone relevant.....SMU is getting better, but that's not a NCAA roster without Edwards playing for them.

So Steele is the coach who probably wants to get back to the Big East, if perhaps Butler or someone else wants to take a chance.....he wouldn't get a look at Providence, or even Syracuse, who also is getting turned down left and right by other mid-major coaches.....

But he's now a hero because he got the last at large bid, playing a bunch of nobodies, lost in the MAC tournament AND gets to play SMU, without one of their best players??? Ok, got it......

The lesson here is the MAC isnt even the declining Big East.....and its nowhere near the competition of the B1G......comparing coaches in mid major leagues to the B1G and saying Miami Ohio is better than RU....does anyone even understand that Jordan Derkack looks like a player at Dayton and had no business on the court in the B1G just 12 months ago......

Carry on my friends, at least Miami got the last bid, which essentially means they're closer to a 1 seed NIT than actually playing in the big dance......and the same fans killing Pike foe scheduling cupcake, ignoring Miami and the weakest OOC scheduling in the field, is comical.....

But hey, you win 1 game on national TV and people think your actually good....its not like Miami did what Shaheen Holloway did at St Peters a few years ago, he actually won REAL games against better teams.....not SMU without a starter

Please read my post before writing a novel. I wasn’t asking about Xavier. I wasn’t fighting for their bid. I was asking how they get 6-7 40+% 3 point shooters. I don’t care if it’s the Mac Rutgers has never come close.

Why is it ridiculous ball movement? It’s just ball movement no? Couldn’t we learn from that?

NIL wasn’t legal until July 2021 and barely impacted ‘21-‘22 rosters. Steele’s last season at Xavier was ‘21-‘22. How was it that he was provided very good NIL while he was there?

Their season has been remarkable at any level or any sport. They finished the regular season undefeated and deserved an at large and that was proven last night

They actually didnt get the last bid. They were seeded last but SMU got the last bid

Do you think all those guys stay and do that again next year? How often does 6-7 guys shooting sound 40% from three happen? Not often. It’s probably pretty lucky recruiting that that worked out that way.

Always has to be luck right. Couldn’t be that Pike could change something or do something better. Just trying to learn why to see how ru could improve. Let me ask you this , even if luck eliminates some, and they have 3-4 like some other teams, why can ru only ever get 0-1 of those type shooters Miami doesn’t have much NIL so that can’t be the excuse.

Just look at the stats from 2024-25 to see how many came back for this year without much NIL money to spread around. MU is getting a huge NIL bump next year.

I included coaching. Winning always includes players, coaching and luck. Right now NIL (Players) is 75% of that equation.

I could see it happening if you just recruit shooters and spend most of your practice just shooting threes with the goal of taking 40 of them per game - pretty sure it was't just lucky recruiting.

Thought this deserved a little more of a look. Not sure how correlated "chucking a lot of 3s" is to winning in CBB in general, but looking at this season's numbers, the team with the most 3s attempted in the country, easily, was...Alabama. Worked well enough for them in the SEC to get a 4 seed. Plus: 3 B1G teams, and good ones, in the top 15. Miami Ohio, on the other hand: 52nd. Above-average and toward the top of the MAC, but nothing crazy. In 3-point percentage, on the other hand: #8 nationally (and they were #3 last year, so not a one-time freak thing). Rather than chucking 3s, they made them count.

It's not about "chucking a lot of threes". It's about making them. What often dooms these types of teams is the lack of a Plan B when the threes stop going in.

Plan B for the teams that are highly successful like Alabama are to have 1-2 strong rebounders who can clean up the misses

the most efficient offenses shot charts are almost entirely behind the arc and at the rim

And many of those teams have big men who are not only strong rebounders, but are skilled at scoring in the paint.
