If, God forbid, we win 4 in a row, would that bring on the longest , greatest off season in UK basketball history ?

NC state made an improbable run to the final four in 2024, fired their coach a year later after a disappointing season. Moral of the story: when a coach needs to be fired you go ahead and do it instead of hoping for lightning to continue striking in the same spot.

We’ve done it before. It was the 2014 season.

Preseason talk of going 40-0, entered the tournament as a 8 seed. Hit clutch shot after clutch shot en route to the championship game.

Pope said he’s here to win banners. Nothing less than 4 straight wins will hang one. If he does, he deserves all the praise in the world for turning this thing around.
4 gets you to Final Four
5 gets you Runner-up
6 gets you the Championship
I am asking because I don't know ... do we hang banners for making the Final Four ??!

Just gonna say, I have this odd feeling we do make a run.
Based purely on the fact that when this team really wants 2, it can play with anyone.

We lose to Santa Clara and maybe it was just indigestion I was feeling.

That team had a perennial all-star named Julius Randle.

This current UK team will be lucky to ever have a player in the top 20 of the draft. Moreno is really the only one who has much more than a chance of shining shoes in the NBA. The 2014 team had multiple future NBA players - Young, Poythress, the Harrison twins, Johnson, Randle, and for part of the season, WCS. The 2014 March edition of Kentucky basketball would smack this current squad by 10 points.

Well, maybe!

They did suck it for long periods during the regular season and lost to teams far worse than this year’s team.

They were preseason top 5 because of the likes of Randle and others. This years team was preseason 9th in AP and outside the top 10 in many preseason prognostications.

That team was judged to be more talented and still had its fair share of crappy performances. They got it together for the postseason for which we are all thankful for.

Folks I would love to see this team have a great run in the tournament, but with that said we don't know what they are going to do in the same game much less win 4 or 6 in a row.My confidence level is not high at the moment .

Look there's been many a year if I said:
"we got to be S Clara, Iowa State , and Virginia to get to the Elite 8 you would be like.......uhhh REALLY? Ok I'll take that.

So what are we really scared of? We have more talent than those three teams. That's a fact. You Can't even argue it. That means it comes down to the coach.

Can King Coach Pope beat those sorry *** teams?

There's no reason he shouldn't be able to. 💯💯💯💯.

The game probably runs out in the Elite 8 but there's nothing stopping you from getting there other than you can't coach a team that has more talent over teams that don't.

Mark Pope's going to show whether we should keep him or fire him in the next few days. He should be able to get past those teams.

Yep, and Ollie won a title (against us) and got canned.

That team had actual basketball talent, and that talent was the driving force behind a 38-0 start in 2015. This team? Oweh and Aberdeen are your "talent".

10? If Vandy and Gonzaga can beat this year's squad by 30+, Randle and the Harrisons would beat them by 40. It would be like that 2015 Kansas game where the score was 40-8 or something at 1 point.

Wouldn't we have to win 6 to be the greatest?
I think what they mean and reference, and someone correct me if i'm wrong here, is the dichotomy between current expectations and reality. We didn't have a great year, and nobody expects us to make a F4, but if we somehow did after this lackluster season, that would be a major accomplishment and represent real growth within the team and coaching staff.

Such success could help push Pope out of "doofus status" and into legit college coach, almost overnight. It would surely unite our fan base, and it would be a major accomplishment for all of BBN!

"Talent" can be bandied about so that one doesn't have to grapple with the actual ability of the player at a given age.

This team would lose to the 2014 team by 40? By 10? They lost by 5 to South Carolina, a team outside the top 100 of kenpom, and got swept by Arkansas, an NIT team.

By invoking a nebulous term like "talent" one can use a team that didn't exist to argue.

Uhhhhhhhh.......

4 in a row, meh.

If we win 6 in a row I would feel kinda like the most technically-kind-of-above-average girl in middle school asked to have my baby. Not really gonna complain about it but still doesn't bode great for the things I care about in the future.

Oh my God what a take. You’ve probably always been one of my top 10 favorite posters on here but holy hell. Cheers my friend.
