Well, after what happened in my town twice last summer, I'd rather have people off the roads. Makes no sense when people can plug back in and work remotely.

That wasn't the case today though. They all got out at the same time. My wife said she felt embarrassed they closed it down. Luckily she got out at her regular time today. When everyone gets out at once it adds about 30 minutes to everyone's commute because of all the traffic. The threat is over now.

What time did they wind up getting let out? I know these threats crap out but there’s always those times when people get caught in bad situations. If we can avoid those, I don’t care about the false alarms.

My wife was at vehicle inspection in Kilmer. Luckily she got thru ok. But as she was finishing she said the lady in charge started freaking out yelling and telling everyone to shut it down due to tornado threat. So like the people in line behind my wife had to leave and come back another day. Guess this was around 3:30 or 3:45.

Watch was scaled back 2+ hours ago and cancelled over an hour ago. Was very likely not going to be an issue given the storm and squall line was already underperforming with regard to severe weather to our west and southwest several hours ago. Still might see some t-storms with locally gusty winds later this evening when the squall line comes through, but damaging winds are unlikely.

Big storms did materialize and a tornado warning is up for Monmouth/Ocean, as per below, and severe t-storm warnings are up for a large swath of the eastern half of NJ as per the map below (counties in orange).

Ocean NJ-Monmouth NJ-
1202 AM EDT Tue Mar 17 2026

...A TORNADO WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 1215 AM EDT FOR NORTH
CENTRAL OCEAN AND SOUTH CENTRAL MONMOUTH COUNTIES...

At 1202 AM EDT, a severe squall line capable of producing both
tornadoes and extensive straight line wind damage was located over
Cassville, or 12 miles northwest of Toms River, moving east at 50
mph.

Tornado warning was dropped, thankfully, and the squall line is now from NYC down into Monmouth/Ocean and nearing the coast. Crazy 5-10 minutes here with heavy rain and guessing 50 mph straight line wind gusts. New NWS map is below.

Looks like it fell aparts as it moved through Monmouth/Ocean. No rain here, just roaring winds.
These storms are becoming so common I slept thru it. Rutgers weather center says highest gusts were 48mph between midnight and 1AM in Sea Girt which has also become pretty common.

Newark recorded one at 71 mph. Didn't see too many limbs or trees down on my way into NB this morning. But there was a pole snapped with wires down near one of the elementary schools in Piscataway.

Our local school district cancelled all after school activities yesterday for what amounted to light winds and occasional sprinkling of rain. What a farking joke

I slept through it as well, does that mean it didn't happen? Absolutely!

Down in Virginia right now. Rained like a mother yesterday, all day, plus we had some brutal winds, especially in the morning. Power flickered a few times but never went out.

Did we get any snow in NJ? I know they were expecting some in parts of PA.

I had just fallen asleep and my wife's fv*king phone started blasting some alert right next to my head. I was pissed. Heard the freight train like winds, laid my head back down and said I'll deal with it tomorrow.

Woke up, our upper deck is being redone and they have plywood down. A sheet blew off and over my wife's brand new car into the driveway. It's not often, but I do get lucky once in a blue moon.

No snow statewide, just in Metuchen. ;)

OT -

About 2 hours ago I heard this loud roar approaching. First thought was "Is that wind?".

Turned out to be two fighter jets flying north low over the ocean about 100 yards from the beach. A few minutes later they came south at the same altitude.

Turns out there were isolated trees down and power outages in various spots throughout the region, as widespread gusts over 60 mph were observed last night (with some of the highest being 72 mph at JFK, 71 mph at EWR, 74 mph in Avalon and 64 mph in Keyport). That included a couple of trees that were brought down in Metuchen with one that narrowly missed a sleeping 11-year old girl (pic below); Channel 7 was there for a report today, linked below.
