Lol to everyone who genuinely thought we should play a bunch of Ryan Boe late last year or in the bowl game for seasoning a player who is far from ready. Cats brought in a veteran backup today late in the portal. Marchiol has played a bit of football at an okay level and has some pedigree, a totally reasonable backup and competitive depth pickup.

At an OK level and transferring from WVU just means another ho hum nothing to see here transfer. WVU isn't what it used to be, and even then it wasn't special. In my book we need someone that can be starting material. Why should we be excited about a guy who couldn't cut the mustard at WVU?

WVU went 4-8 last year and got blown out in several games.

But he did lead them to an upset over Pitt early in the season, and then exited their blowout loss to Kansas with an injury.

Boe has shown flashes. Competition is never a bad thing

He’s coming here to be the backup. What starting level QB is going to sign up to be the backup at Northwestern??

We got our starter already, this is depth. Depth is good.

After a little more reading: Marchiol also has two full years of eligibility left and was a four star recruit back in the day who has some athleticism and running ability. This is a better than usual off-cycle veteran backup/depth pickup with the upside to put it together and look like a future starter next year. The WVU fan base seems to like him too. This is a good pickup. I think Chiles is obviously our 1A option into the season, but if he gets dinged we may be very happy we have Nico available.

As much as I got frustrated with Stone’s poor decisions, the dude played every meaningful snap last year. It didn't really dawn on me until the bowl game.

So we got lucky, because Boe or Frakes were a big drop off. Now, with Kelly's emphasis on mobility and Chiles running ability, this is an important get. We needed and got a legit backup.

Chiles only has this year, Right? If so Marchiol has a full year to learn the system, heal his foot and bring some good competition to the QB room for 2027.

Yup. Experienced backup with athleticism and upside is all very good

Here is one WVU fan's opinion of him:

"Good field general type player and real competitor. Was never the reason we lost games necessarily. When he subbed in for Greene there were flashes that showed he could be the guy going forward like trucking an Ok State linebacker or the @Arizona game. Never took that next big step unfortunately.

Didn’t quite thrive in RR’s offense but he was legitimately hurt and the Oline was horrendous. Beating Pitt in OT was an all time great game and for that he’ll always be fondly remembered. "
