Years ago I read reportedly true stories of dogs traveling long distances to get back to their families
Some dogs must have incredible homing instincts

In this case, looking at this dog, I would bet that someone found this lost dog in Texas and brought it to NJ
The dog then escaped as it usually did

Love those stories. We trapped a cat during the rains a couple of years ago. It was completely mangled but you could tell it had been domesticated. Was missing for a month and traversed from 5 miles away through a canyon. Those canyons are filled with coyotes, rattle snakes, and even some mountain lions, among other things. General rule around here is if your animal is gone for 24 hours you’re never seeing it again. This dude survived for a month. Turns out he was chipped and his owner got him back. Bonaparte. What a stud.

Nice.

Just wondering. In the opinion of someone like you who doesn't live too far away, how's the rebuild going in Pali?

Back in 1980's or so we had a cat that went into a plumbers van that was at the house. He was a few miles away and he opened the door and the cat ran out. We noticed he was missing and after a week or so we just gave up and thought he was never coming back. I remember my mother would stand by the sliding door every morning. One day she yelled she's back. Somehow the cat found her way back home.

I go on a neighborhood website, and it is littered with posts of people who had their cat escape their house.....or other people reporting seeing cats outside, all worried about it, are they lost, abandoned etc

It makes me laugh because they don't realize that cats usually have very good homing instincts and will come back....when they are good and ready

If others feed them, they may hang out there for a while, but they are by no means in trouble

I had two indoor/outdoor cats, one living about 20 years, that loved the outdoors, but spent the majority of the winter in my house
One would disappear for 4-5days, but then would appear on my doorstep

We had a cat called Liverlips because he had real red lips. Except when he went to the vets he was known as Muffins. After a few years he went to live with the neighbors. They called him Boris. Then after another year or so he came back to live with us.

Terrible. 100 people at my club lost homes in the fire. We only have 500 members. I have not heard one person say anything positive. The permitting process is a joke. The coastal commission is looking at this as an opportunity to never allow any ocean side building again. The entire process of permitting is mess. No one is in charge. Politics aside, this couldn't have happened at a worse time. Newsom and Bass are the worst possible people you could have in charge during a crisis.

There is talk of Rick Caruso running for Gov again. It would be a big plus if he did. He's the only one I've seen capable of fixing this disaster.

Our cat, an indoor cat, escaped once. Lots of coyotes and Fox in MA, outdoor cats don’t last long. We had her about a month. I came home with groceries, opened the door, and she ran out. I tried to grab her but she made it up a wooden fence and over and took off. Probably around noon or so. That day and night we walked and drove the neighborhood looking for her, calling her, asking neighbors. Nothing. Figured she was gone. Two days later, I was asleep on the sofa, probably 2 a.m., and I heard a commotion on the front porch and our sensor light went on. I looked out and there she was, under a lawn chair, surrounded by three coyotes, hissing and fighting for her life. I ran to the closet, got a tennis racket and ran to the porch and scared the coyotes off. Opened the door and the cat ran inside.

The cat then was running back and forth frantically through the house, jumping on windowsills looking outside, and almost growling like a dog. Never heard her or any cat sound like that. It was kind of like “let me at em!” And she wanted to continue the fight.

She never got out again and we had her for 13 years.

Sorry to hear. AS I've told you, I spent time there.

Really liked the area.
