You sure about that? UL wasn't even his top 5 on 247 sports, now they're in his top 3.
Leverage for more money. My guess UL offered a bag and he threw them on the list to raise fees.

He’s a California kid. He’ll stay in Ca.

Chris Mills, LeBron Ellis, Boston Jr., Askew, Prince, Terrance Jones, Chuck Hayes, and Johnnie, are just some that come to mind.

I don't think Pope is a bad recruiter. He is a bad businessman. He took his NIL money and spread it out over 13 players trying to even things out. This is reducing the amount of money to pay for a stud or two out of high school and out of the portal. He basically reduced his overall talent of the team by doing this. Therfore we have an average team. Injuries amplified this. What he should do is pay the highest he can pay to a stud from HS and then 2 -3 studs in the portal. Then take the rest of the money to distribute it to the role players. To me this money needs to be spent correctly. Its a business and nothing else now. Thats what a GM will do for Pope. Just because a person is smart doesn't always make a good business person.

We've had a few since 1990 from the West Coast (my research may be wrong). Here they are:

  • Tayshaun Prince – Compton, CA
  • Terrance Jones-Portland, OR
  • Brandon Williams-Gilbert, AZ
  • Johnny Juzang – Los Angeles, CA
  • Devin Askew – Los Angeles, CA
  • Lamont Butler – Moreno Valley, CA
  • EJ Floreal – Palo Alto (walk-on), CA

2 of those transferred out and one walked on. Go Cats!

Forgot about Lee.

I'm assuming they offered him seven and a half million dollars and he turned it down to go play for USC and 2.6 million. Or Louisville and 3 million.

He'll contact the Pope staff and ask for 10 million at the last second. They will pass. And they will understand the game they're in and he should resign afterwards.

Very rarely do we land a west coast player. I am as down on Pope as anybody but it's almost a waste of time to recruit those guys. We've had a few but not many.
What? Mark Pope was hot and heavy on him and Collins wanted to go to UK. He couldn’t land him. This isn’t about location, I seriously doubt we couldn’t outbid USC either. This is about money then brand. We’ve got more money and a bigger brand.

Pope cannot recruit worth a damn. He’s been a head coach going on 13 years and has NEVER signed an elite player. Time people woke up I get it he played here so what? He cannot do what this job required.

JMI will get blamed here but I will have to see proof that he will.make more at USC.
Maybe he was willing to leave the West Coast for a certain amount and it didn't come through.
Big time NIL at USC goes to football players.
There is no chance USC can outbid UK basketball for a player that UK needs and wants. It’s not going to happen. Collins was all in on UK and met Mark Pope and the longer it went the colder it got.

Every insider I remember reading when we lost the momentum in the recruitment said it was an NIL issue.

Like I have continuously posted agents and players will not commit to ky with the present conditions of the jmi contract. Pope is an idiot for not already having a general manager in place. There is no way in hell Collins to ky happens.

You all still look at recruiting like it used to be.

It simply comes down to money now. These kids absolutely do not care what jersey they wear. Time will tell if we offered this kid enough to make him say yes or if we didn’t. It’s really that simple.

We have plenty of money to offer players/recruits but they want a coach they connect with on a certain level.
They don't want a walking Hallmark movie. Kids want an uncensored coach who will challenge them but have their back.

The old adage, "I'd rather be respected than liked," applies to coaching and parenting.

It's not JMI. It's Mark Dope. That narrative of JMI was blown out of proportion. Yes, there are SOME issues but it's nothing that can't be worked out. It's as simple as Dope can't recruit, he's too nerdy and doesn't resonate with these kids!
I have heard Mark was too involved in the contract stuff and mucked it up. Both with Collins and Stokes before.
