I went to Nunz Park to see the women play softball on Sunday. State pitchers in two games had held #1 Tennessee women scoreless for 15 of 16 innings. We won a 1-0 walk-off on Saturday. We lost Sunday, but Coach Ricketts and staff are building a program that is challenging who ever comes in their way. This week our ‘girls’ have moved to #9. Great job, Ladies! Hail State. We are going to have to add to the stadium soon.
Small clarification, They are #9 in the RPI. They are #12/#13 in the polls.
We seem to have the pitching to have a special season. But the SEC is brutal. We play eight series. The first seven are against ranked teams. The last one against Ole Miss is the only unranked team we play, and they are a top 20 RPI team coming off a WCWS season.
Softball selection committee has a history of sucking, so we have zero room for error. A couple of seasons ago, we finished five spots ahead of Alabama in the SEC standings with a series win and Alabama hosted over us (May have been the season we won the regional at FSU).
Of the top 20 teams in the RPI, only us and Ole Miss are not softball brands with a history of OKC berths (and Ole Miss made the WCWS last year). This weekend's series at Georgia is big, because Georgia will likely be one of the teams we are competing for a host spot with.
The SEC will likely get six hosts, and we are sixth in the RPI among SEC teams - and thats without Oklahoma, which will host if they are anywhere close to the top 20.
