For the First Time Since Joe B Hall, Pope Did Not Talk About The Tourney Yet - Still Silent

So I am hearing and reading from multiple sources, so take it with a grain of salt.

It's just weird that Pope as someone who should know UK"s traditions, breaks that tradition.

Apparently, Joe B Hall was the one who started this media press conference to talk about the seeding and the team we play. Also get players reactions.

Pope is silent and not speaking. Just another weird thing from a guy who should understand that tradition.

Not sure what it's about. Just passing potential information. Don't shoot the messenger.

Playing it safe, probably don't want to open himself up to any possible criticism outside of the walled JMI garden. When things weren't going so well under Calipari, he would address the media and fanbase regularly, radio silence from Pope.

I’m not going to pretend to know the motive behind it. I think it could be embarrassment and trying to refocus his team. It could be that he’s trying to let them soak in all the media attention to people picking Santa Clara. Either way, the decision will be under a microscope if we come out Friday and lay an egg.

I did find it odd.

I am hoping it is embarrasment. Pope has to know no one is happy to see a preseaaon top 10 team get a 7 seed.

Maybe he knows pretending to be happy and acting like these guys are going to make a run would seem disingenuous because it is.

Pope after MSU: We will not fail

Earning a 9 seed in the SECT and a 7 seed in the dance is a failure at Kentucky. He knows.

The Cal thing was true early on. He sent assistants to do media and his radio show the last few years.

I’m fine with it. What’s a press conference going to achieve? No reporters are ever going to ask any hard questions, and Pope’s not going to have anything to say about Santa Clara that hasn’t already been said by the media. Use that time to game-prep and right the ship instead of shelling out empty platitudes.

I'm sure he is embarrassed from saying this team is a Ferrari to a 7th seed. Also, Coach Cal winning the SEC tournament in his 2nd year, he don't want to answer those questions either lol poor guy.

At this point, there is nothing to say. And, to be honest, most press conferences are worthless.

"Coach, are you looking ahead to a possible matchup with UT?" "No, we are focused on Santa Clara."

"Coach, how do you plan to beat Santa Clara?" "Rebound better, shoot better, protect the basketball."

"Coach, do you have any special tricks up your sleave to win that first game?" "Yeah, we are taking the players to Taco Bell before the game. Once they start passing gas, the Santa Clara players will quit playing that up close defense!"

"Coach, do you have any special tricks for playing defense?" "Yeah, Ashley Judd never played college sports and has eligibility. She is suiting up for the team and will be a starter. With that distraction, we figure we will have a 15 point lead before Santa Clara's doofus coach catches on."

Okay, we now know everything that would have been said at the press conference. No reason to hold one.

Maybe he should have declined the 7?

Do you think he knows that deep down?
That's a relevant and interesting question. Does he think deep down that he's not qualified? He is a hyperbolic person who balances on the edge of delusion. Even at this late date, despite evidence to the contrary, he thinks his team is on the cusp of a great run. I don't think that it enters his find that he is unqualified. Greatness is always just around the corner, at arm's length. He is "super positive" even when he coaches a team to 14 losses.

I had a friend who had toxic positivity and never wanted to face anything or talk about anything negative. So he always had to fix it. The guy was very dismissive of anyone who wasn't as positive as him. I don't know if Pope is that way, but if he knows deep down he's not qualified or can't do it, then to me his tenure at KY won't look good. Unless he has a strong will inside of him to not give up. The thing that needs to show that to the fans is him changing some things. He did that with this years roaster and it was a bad call. Yet at the same times, doing the same thing all year for games and his sub patterns. So I don't know.
