Watching the “Great American Race” having a field of cars running at half throttle has annoyed way more people than burnouts. Hell I can get on the interstate and participate in that.

I think the governing body of NASCAR is the only thing worse than actual government. Everytime they change something for the "better" it gets worse.

You could do like most of the long time fans and quit watching
I used to go to Talladega every year at least once. And would add in another race somewhere interesting scattered in here and there. Haven't been to one since '06 and I could not name 3 active Cup drivers if I had to. Haven't watched a race on TV in probably 6 or 7 years. Couldn't name you any lower tier drivers. Don't even know what those series are called anymore.

Why are they running half throttle?

Genuinely curious. I haven't watched NASCAR in years.

I haven't seen one of those in probably 20 years, since I stopped watching NASCAR.

I did always want to see somebody blow up one of those high dollar engines while doing one though

Because these new cars have so much drag, a car running at full throttle cannot pull away from a pack running at half. So if you actually race for the lead and hell.. try to make the race exciting.. you actually screw yourself and will have to refuel before the others just cruising.

So the new challenge is to make to these idiotic stage break automatic cautions. And to do that you have to run part throttle. So basically lap 1 till 15 laps or so to the finish, they are literally running around being moving billboards on cruise control.

All while the stands get more empty by the event.

Yep, when Kyle Busch, one of the greatest drivers of all time, gets out of the car after a race he just won and says that the car of tomorrow is the biggest pos he's ever driven and wouldn't want it in a demolition derby, you should know that something is wrong.
They could hire me to fix that sport and I'd take 10 percent of the profit increase from the previous year to the year they made the changes for payment.

The car: Back to the 90s shape and simplicity with the new safety equipment. Make it 6 inches wider and a few inches taller. Don't care. But it matches the old. Teams get leeway in tolerances. An error amount. Anything over is DQ. But if it's within the margin of error.. good to go. It encourages "creativity". Plus you can put the spoiler at any angle.. remove the sumbitch of you want to. No care. Back to the H style shift pattern with no clutchless shifts.

engine: tracks 2 miles and over are mandated to run 87 octane fuel, dual plane, low style intake, a 2 barrel throttle body instead of the current 4, and maximum size of the header tubes is 1 1/2. Teams choice to either run fuel injection or carburetors. But must be same size CFM size. Then toss that damn restrictor plate.

Rules. The lane choice arrow for restarts... gone. There are now 6 stages per race to award bonus points.. but no cautions. Each marked by a simple flag notification and race keeps going. Back to old qualifying rules. Back to old points system with bonus points for the win.

crowd pleasers. The clash is back at Daytona. Except the cars will run the style of a previous generation. Either 70s, 80s, or 90's. Frame of the current car, body style of old car. Toyota and dodge would go off a style of car they had in those generations. One team can run a local dirt track driver from anywhere in the country, with zero NASCAR experience, to field a team to get around the charter rules.

Substitute "NBA" for "NASCAR race" and that's me. Haven't watched an NBA game in at least 20 years. Sooooooo painful . . . .

I went to Talladega once back in college. This was when Gordon was in his prime and was absolutely hated. Also had a certain rumor about his life choices going around. As we drove into the parking area I saw people with signs that had three words on them written top to bottom so that the first letter of each word lined up. Those first letters were in red while the others were in black. Those three words were:
Fans
Against
Gordon

I'll give you a second. What I found hilarious were those MENSA members holding those signs were not calling Gordon that. They were calling themselves that and didn't realize it.

As for the race, 99% of it Gordon was back of lead lap and Earnhardt was top 5. As you can imagine we were in a sea of black in the stands. Towards the end of the race Gordon starts moving up a then with just around 20 laps to go the field goes by and everybody realizes the 3 car wasn't one of them. A few seconds later you hear a horrible sound and you see Earnhardt driving around much slower with smoke pouring out the back of his car after he blew an engine. The stands were like you were at a funeral. I had had just enough adult beverages to where my since of self preservation was gone. I had spent the last three hours being given more hell than I thought possible by the surrounding fans. So after he passes limping by I turned to the one that had been the most obnoxious and said the following:

Excuse me. I'm new to the sport and this is my first race. Are the cars supposed to sound like that?

Instead of making him furious it almost brought him to tears. It was glorious. He was too heartbroken to get mad. Gordon ended up finishing third and then it was a fun time fighting traffic back home.

The sport died with Earnhardt, it just took 25 years to realize it. COT, Jimmy Johnson winning everything, stage racing and that idiot Bubba Wallace will finish it off.

Easiest fix is go back to the you can race it Sunday and buy it on Monday days. True stock cars with reasonable modifications for safety.

You have some decent ideas and some really terrible ones. You can throw that whole last paragraph out for starters. The stage fix is spot on tho. That will work great. Carbs are a pos if fuel injection is an option so you won’t see any of them ran. Take anything else you just mentioned and add that extra hp these motors can make on every track but the super speedways, too. Speaking of the super speedways, the plate is races make for too good of tv so they ain’t gonna change them whether we want them too or not.

I like some of the things about the new car. The single out of house chassis builder idea is great. These cars need horsepower and tires that fall off and we will have something, imo.

thanks for posting this, btw

17 no. Race cars are race cars. Progression is part of racing. This is the top level of a sport and it needs to be that. Not a **** box I’ll handling death trap
