Pearl is a great coach and was Golden's mentor. Golden best friend is Stephen Pearl. They are like brothers......I have always liked Bruce since UT. I remember when he took off his shirt and painted a letter on it in support of that great lady coach from UT.

So was Pitino and everyone here loved him.

Let's be real.. college basketball coaches have to be some of the scummiest of all sports coaches across the board. I find that so fascinating, that college basketball coaches are almost as big of egos/headcases/prima donnas as the players. All of them are skirting rules and doing shady ****. You can't trust any of them at the podium. It's kind of hilarious honestly.

I'll hand it to Pitino, he just happened to be just a little bit sleazier than others and a little more careless. But you'll never convince me guys like Coach K are any better human beings. If Pitino can win a Final4 at SJU, he's the GOAT coach IMO.

Chronology matters to this history. Pitino may have always been competitive to an extreme, but his worst behaviors didn't become apparent until after he left Kentucky. He walked out the door a shining beacon of Success.

Take last year out and these same results would have UK fans screaming for his firing too. Those results are nearly identical to Cal’s last 4 years

2020-21: 13-14
2021-22: 28-6 (Round of 32 as a 2 seed)
2022-23: 21-13 (round of 32 as an 8 seed)
2023-24: 27-8 (round of 64 as a 4 seed)

I’m not saying it wouldn’t be an upgrade over Pope, but this board acts like Pearl is Coach K when he’s really just Great Value Cal.
I think the assumption is that he did that at Auburn and would get a big boost in results because of the Kentucky brand.

The elephant in the room that not many us like to acknowledge though is that I’m not sure how much of a program level advantage we really have in the modern era. Cal was great in his early tenure, but probably should have already won a championship at Memphis and had Wall and Boogie committed there before changing jobs. He’s continued to be the same guy at Arkansas that he was later in his tenure here. Pope is also pretty much producing the same results he had at BYU so far, as his been discussed frequently the past few weeks. I’m just not sure the mythology that the Kentucky program allows a coach to win at a level they couldn’t literally anywhere else really holds up currently.

Rick Barnes is CBB winningest active coach. Just a datapoint.

I like Bruce Pearl. I am, despite his success, not sure how I feel about Golden. My jury is still out on Pope.
