Charters and Prep schools at it again

Let's beat this dead horse again: Charter and Prep schools need to compete with their own kind. They are taking all the championships from schools with enrollment restrictions. It's really evident in basketball right now. All the small school state champions are charters or preps. It may not be much of a problem for the big boys, but for the smaller schools, it's just not right or fair. Had a disagreement with someone earlier who's child just won their prep school a bball championship, and he said "We have a lottery. It's not like prep schools are just picking athletes." He doesn't seem to understand that it's still not the same as being forced to field a team made of kids from the same neighborhood. Besides, who really oversees the "lottery"? How random is it, really? All I know is his child's school is a prep school in Wilson, that in 7 full seasons of NCHSAA basketball play, has won 2 men's bball championships. Women's basketball played for the state championship in its 2nd year of existence, played in the eastern finals last year, and won it all this year. And in 5 years of football, has played in the eastern championship last year, and won it all this year. Meanwhile, right down the street from them in Rocky Mount and Tarboro, there are prep schools that have the same lottery system, that suck in sports. To have that kind of success, either this prep school in Wilson, that I shall not name lol, has outstanding coaches, or outstanding lottery luck. My point is, if you can choose your students, then compete with other schools that do the same. Make it fair.

Uwharrie Charter’s lottery does a phenomenal job of landing wrestlers, year in and year out. It seems to defy the odds.

There are rumblings that there are legislators in Raleigh that are pushing for open enrollment across the whole state. Mix that with the push to opt into the federal school choice program from the only Secretary of Education to take a Stone Cold Stunner. It's about to really get even more messy and y'all are about to be even more upset.

You can't complain when you've sat silent about the bigger issue at hand that has created the current problem.

If there is open enrollment across the state, then no one would be more upset.

At least everyone will be on equal ground and equal rules at that point. Instead of special schools getting huge recruiting areas

It will be equal rules for everyone. Outcomes are never guaranteed, they are what u make of the work u put in to it. Right now charters and all publics are not playing by the same rules. Charters have huge district ranges, some counties have open enrollment and some are very strict. At least uniformed rules give everyone an opportunity to play by same rules. Now it's up to individual schools to make the best of opportunity

I agree our local school borders forsyth county and they have had open enrollment for a while

You have to see the big picture here. This is more than just about sports

Look at the schools in Forsyth. Look what their enrollment procedures did to Carver and North Forsyth.

Open Enrollment in WSFCS has affected several schools. Carver , North Forsyth, Glenn, my favorite Parkland. 20-25 years ago these schools had serious football/sports programs. Now the only schools that are worth anything are East Forsyth, West Forsyth, Reagan, Mt. Tabor. And that list is even shrinking. Yea RJR made the playoffs this year but RJR has pretty much stunk since Mike Propst left in 2009. Glenn had a flash there for a minute after Dickie Cline left and we can say the same for the rest(Carver, North Forsyth and Parkland) all have had a season or two then poof back to being awful. Back in 2003 all the schools in WSFCS were competitive. its about what you can get from other schools. And if you are a have not school Like North Forsyth, Parkland, Carver, RJR, Glenn, Prep, your kids will more than likely end up at East Forsyth, West Forsyth, Reagan, Tabor.

To a smaller scale, Walkertown is starting to pick up some as well. It was actually a big scale this season

Well as a one time head football coach in Winston Salem what you have is a true vanishing of athletic programs in Winston Salem. I would not be shocked if Carver, Parkland, North Forsyth have enough kids to field a team in a decade.

I graduated from NF and it was good school in late 70's. Forsyth County was all 2 year high schools and we had 1400 students. Parkland, RJR, EF, and WF were all on equal playing field. NF was really good in basketball and baseball.

But through all this movement in Forsyth County, how many state championships have they won with open enrollment. East Forsyth, when did they last win? Mt. Tabor covid year? And I am not talking track, tennis , golf, etc.

Hough has been pulling transfers for years and just finally got over the hump.

No, because Statesville will have the same opportunity for students to transfer there without having to move. It's about having the same opportunity and playing field. If everything is fair and some teams are better than others, then so be it. But if a team is better than the others because they have different rules for them, that's when people get mad.
