The only reason Lamont Paris is not being fired is because of his buyout which from what I have heard is around $9M. The last time we had to pay a buyout was with Will Muschamp. Tanner had to borrow the 12M from the university to pay his buyout. With all that is going on with the stadium renovations, NIL, revenue share from what I understand the university does not want to pay Lamont Paris 9M to move on. So hopefully with the increase in funds to buy players things will get better. This is a wait and see how things work out. This is another one of Ray Tanner's great hires along with the baseball coach who has a buyout of over 9m. We all have seen how that is going on so far. We may be stuck with these two great hires by Ray Tanner. Here's what is interesting is that last year the Gamecock Club had a record year in people in the Gamecock Club with over 28,000 members. Paying for full scholarships for all the athletes NIL, rev share from what I understand unless congress comes in and makes drastic changes a lot of schools will be going through with what we are going through. The Gamecock Club had a record year in giving with over 130m. But I have been told that a reserve fund has increased since last year's record setting year in contributions. Lastly from talking with people what is interesting is that with all the scholarships that have been given to student athletes over the years less than 1% give back to the university or even join the Gamecock Club even at the lowest level. So much entitlement. An example of this entitlement is that a baseball player who left USC after his junior year went on to play MLB for 7 years until his career was over had plenty of money (unless like a lot of professional athletes) wasted the money on cars, jewelry, wild men and women, came back to USC wanting to finish their education and have the university pay for him or her to finish their education requirements to get a degree and because a lot of SEC, ACC, Big10 schools have programs to where athletes can come back and finish their education requirement for their degree, yet they made a lot of money playing professional sports they want the university to pay for their final education requirements but they do not even join the Gamecock Club to give back to the school. All these schools in the ACC, SEC, BIG10, Big12 go through this. It is your normal person paying Booster Club dues that pays for this, yet your athletes do not participate or do not choose to even give back. Lastly the stadium renovations are going through legal challenges with people buying insurance policies for $100 thousand, and now USC is not wanting to honor the contracts they signed with these people and are wanting them to pay for the new charges for the suites. This was a contract and USC is not wanting to honor the contract they signed with these long-time season ticket holders. This will be determined by the courts and is a wait and see situation.

Colleges in general need to stop giving these coaches such ridiculous buyouts. Severance should be in line with what the rest of us in our society are entitled to, which is typically nothing. These coaches are hired to win, if they aren't winning then they shouldn't be owed anything. They should not be rewarded for failing.

You can thank Jimmy Sexton for that. He negotiated in the best interests of his coaches and now it has become standard in a contract. It won't go away. Coaches will just take the jobs that offer them a contract buyout in the event that they are fired.

UK spent 20 million on MBB players and at one point was in danger of missing the tournament. I think they could make the sweet 16 but UK bought them to win it all. I was hoping so bad they would miss the tournament.

Board of Trustees needs some blame here, too. They approve all contact extensions and hirings made by the A.D. If the BOT had any balls, they wouldn't have approved some of these.

Thank you for posting this because you are 100% correct, they are ridiculous, Donati has almost no leverage at all at the moment to address this situation, 3 of four seasons of abysmal performance, unless he wished to reward a mediocre coach and Lamont Paris is overall mediocre, one who should have not been hired in the first place.

It could go away if the NCAA put a stop to it, but they won't.

Yes, it makes sense for a school advisor to suggest to someone coming back to finish their degree (in IMO, they should have finished it before turning pro) to joing the Gamecock Club. I have to imagine that it probably never occurred to many of these athletes that such would be a nice gesture.

Yeah, because they can’t set a limitation on compensation without there being a collective bargaining agreement and union. They’re already running into this with past players suing them for limiting their compensation…

Coaching is not like other profession.. Everyone can't win. Every game has a winner and a loser no matter how good either coach is.
Thats the issue with saying "they are paid to win."

They should, but I don't know a way around it. As long as any school does it, they all have to do it. The Texas schools can offer ridiculous buyouts b/c they have an endless supply of money. It's unfortunate, but I don't see how they can ever go away, unless all P4 schools banded together in agreement on it.

I can somewhat understand the origin of the buyout, as a protection for the coach against an impatient or fickle fan base, who might push for a coach to be canned after one disappointing year. Now, however, they've gotten so large that it's prohibitive to fire a coach even after multiple, terrible seasons.

This sums it up nicely.

It would be cool to bring buyouts back to a reasonable realm, but I dont see it happening.

The only way anything is going to change is for the fans to stop sending in money. As long as the fans continue to send in tens of millions (hundreds of millions?) of dollars each year, the schools have no incentive whatsoever to change anything.

Still determining a D-III school to follow and not think about this mess. 😁
