He wasn't fired because of the scandal, he was fired to talking to a players when that was forbidden, which he admitted to doing.

Telling a player to hire a lawyer is not a fireable offense, except if you are at a scumbag, cheating school like Michigan.

This article doesn't say what cause of action Partridge is asserting: being made a "scapegoat" does not necessarily entitle one to damages. An article elsewhere said his claim is that he was deprived of due process -- that is, he should have gotten some kind of hearing before he was dismissed. His real grievance is that he was defamed, but successfully suing for defamation is *very* difficult.

I think a lot of this I found in a google search was in the article, but what I;m posting now from that search might give a better understanding why he feels like he was scapegoated and suing
From google search:

AI Overview
>Former Michigan linebackers coach Chris Partridge sued the University of Michigan in March 2026, alleging wrongful termination and claiming he was used as a
"scapegoat" to resolve legal tensions between the university and the Big Ten Conference during the 2023 sign-stealing investigation.
Partridge believes he was scapegoated for the following reasons, based on his 46-page federal complaint:
  • He was innocent of the allegations: Partridge maintains he had nothing to do with the advanced scouting and sign-stealing operation run by Connor Stalions, and he was later exonerated of wrongdoing by the NCAA.
  • False "Obstruction" Narrative: The lawsuit states that Michigan spread false information claiming Partridge was fired for destroying evidence or interfering with the investigation, which he denies.
  • The "Advice" Conversation: Partridge admitted to telling a Michigan player to "get a lawyer" and be honest with the NCAA, a conversation he claims was twisted into an accusation that he told a player "not to be forthright".
  • Pressure from the Big Ten: The suit alleges that Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti pressured Michigan AD Warde Manuel with uncorroborated, second-hand information, and that firing Partridge was a sacrificial move by Michigan to avoid deeper conflict with the conference.
  • No Violation of Rules: Partridge claims there was never a directive given prohibiting coaches from speaking with players during the investigation, and his dismissal was unjust given his dedication to the program.
Partridge, who now works for the Seattle Seahawks, is seeking damages for lost wages, emotional distress, and damage to his professional reputation. <

I understand why he feels scapegoated, but he needs a legal grounds on which to recover. Is he saying his contract was breached? Is he saying he was defamed? Is he saying he should have gotten a hearing before he was dismissed? We know what factual allegations he is making, but we aren't told in the articles very much about his claim to be entitled to legal relief.

Without due process, as a state employee, he probably has a cause for wrongful termination?

Maybe. If he convinces a court that he was entitled to more procedure than he got, a court would probably order that he get that procedure now. My guess is that he'd get a hearing and back pay for the period between his termination and when his contract would have expired. Maybe he'll get exonerated at the hearing. If not, he at least would have gotten a chance to be heard.

I ran this through Grok-- I have a Pacer account, but I'm not paying 15 cents per page:

The complaint is a 46- or 47-page document (sources vary slightly in page count descriptions) alleging that his 2023 firing amid the Connor Stalions sign-stealing investigation was unjustified, violated his due process rights under the Fourteenth Amendment, breached his employment agreement, and involved spreading false information that damaged his reputation. He claims he was used as a "scapegoat" — his only relevant action was advising a player to get a lawyer before an NCAA interview, which the NCAA later did not view as serious wrongdoing (clearing him overall, with only a minor recruiting text violation noted). The suit ties the firing to pressure from Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti and negotiations involving Jim Harbaugh's suspension challenge. The full complaint is accessible through federal court records on PACER (Public Access to Court Electronic Records), the official U.S. federal courts' electronic filing system. Direct links to the PDF filing include:

Federal Rule of Civil Procedure Rule 8(a)(2) says a complaint should contain "a short and plain statement of the grounds for relief." A complaint that long is as much an attempt to state his side of the story for the sake of persuading possible future employers as a request for judicial relief. My guess is that the university will settle without making any admission of liability.

Some years ago, a Cal basketball coach was fired for allegedly using profane and abusive language toward his players. He brought a similar suit claiming lack of due process and IIRC correctly the suit was thrown out by the courts. But maybe this will come out differently.

Every time your explanations mention wander toward Harbaugh, two things come to mind. One is that you're still not making any sense, seemingly calling upon others to make the connections that are only fusing up in your brain, and the other is that you must not like Harbaugh, something that is neither unique or interesting.

What’s so hard to understand that it WAS Harbaugh that was running this whole scheme of cheating by HIS staff? He was responsible for the actions of his staff and bolted to the NFL. I like Harbaugh. I don’t like Partridge who’s pointing fingers at the school, AD, trustees and the commish of the BIG which is all bullsh@t. WTF do they have to do with setting up a systemic, surveillance and signal calling protocol to spy on other programs.

Do you need pictures to understand my point?

Harbaugh is the biggest culprit of them all and his former assistant coach feels wronged by everyone except the head coach. He oversaw the whole scheme that led to his firing.

Why aren't your explanations getting any better? Why can't you make sense. We don't need pictures. We need well-placed nouns and verbs, a string of sensical statements that support some sort of sane proposition or conclusion, not just mentions of Harbaugh or your dislike for Partridge leading to a confused BS shout. Like this: "I don’t like Partridge who’s pointing fingers at the school, AD, trustees and the commish of the BIG which is all bullsh@t."

We get it. You don't like Partridge. But the article says that the AD fired Patridge. You did read that, right. But that's not the guy he should sue, along with the board and school? Even though the article goes on to say that the NCAA found no evidence to support the claims against Partridge--meaning why he was fired. Even though the article states that the lawsuit alleges that the AD apologized to Partridge after the NCAA hearing. Even though the article says that the lawsuit also alleges that the AD admitted to making hasty decisions on things like Partridge's firing.

Did you even read the article? What exactly are you on about? No pictures necessary. Just a sensible collection of propositions and conclusions.

Is it OK for me to remind everyone that Partridge's complaint is his version of what happened and nothing more? We don't know if any of what he says is true. When a Rutgers athlete is accused of something, we are quick to say (rightly) that he is entitled to his day in court and that we shouldn't accept the accusation as necessarily true. The same applies here.

I will be as concise, simple and to the point as possible.

The whole Michigan sign stealing scheme was contrived, constructed and implemented under the leadership and oversight of Jim Harbaugh. Once the investigation was completed by the Big Ten conference and punishment was laid out and Harbaugh bolted to the NFL, the entirety of the Michigan staff should have been fired not just Stallions and Partridge who as a defensive assistant received signals from the illegal activities of the sign stealing scheme.

Harbaugh knew about it. Stallions knew about it. Partridge knew about it and others. That’s why the Mich defense picked off a RU pass and took it to the house before the play even had a chance to develop.

Even Greg was quoted at the half “There’s some stuff going on out there….”

See video in case you’re reading impaired:

“Schiano was asked about those three penalties in his halftime interview with the Big Ten Network, and his answer was cryptic: “There is some stuff going on out there, so we just have to slow it down. There are some things going on that aren’t right as well. So we’ll talk about how to handle it.”

In MY opinion, Partridge’s claims have no merit. Were you on the staff at Paramus Catholic during his time? Sheesh.

Not sure why Harbaugh would be named in a lawsuit. Harbaugh may have concocted the sign stealing. Maybe not. But he wasn’t the one that fired Stallions or Partridge. Stallions resigned and partridge never said Harbaugh was responsible for the termination. Rather it was above the line of command from Harbaugh. And Harbaugh has much smaller pockets than the University, the BOT and the Head of department.
Also Harbaugh was more than likely next on the chopping block. That’s why he scurried off to the NFL. He has a 10 year show cause if he returns to college football.

This may be a money grab. But it would be more of a money grab and would have less merit if Harbaugh was added. Adding Harbaugh would do nothing but weaken the case and weaken Partridges ability for employment within the NFL or coaching in general.

When the confused get going, the posts get growing. To you, it's about Paramus Catholic, who was on its staff, whether Greg Schiano noticed sign stealing, your preference that the entire staff should have been fired, and it's all BS. Got it. You don't know what the lawsuit is about, though. Got that too. It alleges that Michigan fired Partirdge for reasons different from what you are going on about, that those reasons were false and contrived, and that the state actor defendants violated his constitutional rights. It's about purportedly false statements connected to the investigation of the sign stealing and allegedly false reasons for his firing. I don't know whether it's valid or contrived. Nor could I. One thing I do know though: you definitely don't know.

Seems you don't like Partridge, and you seemed to conclude that his claim was BS because he did not sue Harbaugh? Is that correct?
IMO, there is enough in the complaint to survive a motion to dismiss for failure to state a claim for relief- that is a basic legal standard. After some discovery, we shall see if Partridge's claim survives a summary judgment motion.

When Partridge was fired, the university cited his alleged failure to abide by directives not to discuss the ongoing probe with football program associates, and there were initial reports/allegations that he interfered with the investigation (e.g., destroying evidence or coaching responses to NCAA questions).

However, the NCAA's final ruling in August 2025 cleared Partridge of wrongdoing related to the core scandal—he was not found to have participated in or covered up the scouting operation.

Partridge admits advising a player to consider getting counsel and to be honest. That is completely different than the directive to "not to discuss the ongoing probe with football program associates." Any decent human being would offer that advice to someone who asked.

So, just wondering why you think his claims are BS, aside from the fact that you apparently do not like him?

The guy was part of a conspiracy to obtain signals and play calls from opposing teams through means that violated the rules of college football and fair play. He ill gotten information to make defensive play calls and adjustments on the field of play for an unfair advantage. It was reported that Partridge even oversaw and directed Stallions. Not to mention guy had a bad reputation coming out of NJ and Paramus Catholic. Michigan got a slap on the wrist by the BIG and NCAA. They shouldn’t have even been allowed to play for a national championship.

The Michigan staff was playing outside the lines throughout Harbaugh’s tenure. Even had a staff member that was caught accessing student databases and had another scumb@g in Sherone Moore on staff.

I don’t know what else to tell you about Harbaugh’s method of cheating and unfair play while at Michigan. Just look at Greg’s expression in that half time interview.

Can you point us to any factual information or links to support your conclusion that he was part of a conspiracy to obtain signals and play calls? Cause Grok says:

"The NCAA's investigation, which concluded with a major report and sanctions against the University of Michigan in 2025 (including a large fine and findings of "overwhelming evidence" for Stalions' impermissible scouting scheme), explicitly cleared Partridge of wrongdoing related to the sign-stealing operation itself. Multiple sources, including the NCAA's public infractions decision, ESPN reporting, and Wikipedia's summary of the case, state that Partridge was cleared of any involvement in the illegal scouting or sign-stealing activities orchestrated by Stalions."

This sounds a like Partridge Derangement Syndrome without anything to back up the claim.

I think it’s funny how you HarbaughPartridgetards are popping up to defend individuals that have/are doing wrong. LIke the T D Suckers.

Ya know, I've been nice and collegial in my discussion, as I strive to do. For the record, I despise Jim Harbaugh. I have no opinion on Partridge, although I am aware, he made some people angry when he was a high school head coach.

Some of us like to deal in facts. It's obvious from your continued unsupported diatribes, you deal in your imaginary narratives. I politely asked you for details. Your first sentences speaks volumes that you have no facts or details.
You're second sentence- don't know what to make of it. Try typing in English.

A big part of this board (for some of us) is friendly banter and having a good time. As for you:

Sheesh.

Great analysis, well you know we just have to keep playing, wow

IMO, there is enough in the complaint to survive a motion to dismiss for failure to state a claim for relief- that is a basic legal standard. After some discovery, we shall see if Partridge's claim survives a summary judgment motion.

As an experienced lawyer, you know that a complaint can survive a motion to dismiss for failure to state a claim for relief even if not a word in the complaint is true. If I allege that you assaulted me and that I am therefore entitled to damages, my complaint will survive such a motion even if we never met.
