Lino came alive again. After playing one minute against Maryland, Lino scored 12, 16, 18. Pike, who suffers a severe form of rotation derangement disorder, inserted Lino into starting lineup. Lino's timing was impecible, he'll stack $$$ on the four starts (5, 14, 16, 17 points.)

Why off season? Why can't this be addressed in game or over a 32 game 4 + month season? Isn't that coaching?

Yeah. We’re giving a ton of minutes to guys who are probably a season away from where they should be to get these kind of minutes.

People are down on Grant - but he’s a sophomore.

Disagree.

Inexcusable to not find a way to get an easy layup for your top scorer.

They couldn’t even manufacture points with him at the free throw line as a 93(?)% free throw shooter.

That’s coaching, and it’s the kind of thing that makes a difference this time of year.

So I guess it was good coaching that got him 29 points and only one miss from three yesterday.

I could easily see 6 new players here. I didn’t say there all studs, but we are going to lose guys, and we need upgraded talent. Expect new faces here. We need a starting roster because other than Francis, there are no starters here for a legit, NCAA tournament contending, Big 10 team. The guys we keep should be coming off the bench next year.

The whole point of playing youth is to invest in the following season. We weren’t gonna hit on all 7 freshman, but there’s now a core to build on.

We played hard, but can’t win without Francis playing well – he was terrible tonight, going 2-11/0-5 after scoring 20+ a game over the last couple of weeks. If we get a normal game from him, this one possibly goes down to the wire. TO’s also hurt and they had 11 more FTs, although they didn't shoot that great from deep either.

On the other hand, they beat us by 32 a few weeks back and we kept this one close for awhile and when it looked like they were going to blow us out, we fought back and had it under 10 with 2+ minutes to go. We have some good pieces and if we can keep the best pieces and add some height/scoring from the inside, we could be decent next year. I hope we are as I like Pike a lot as a coach and a leader of young men and hope we can be good enough next year that we'll want to keep him.

Sure in part putting him in a position to score, in some part individual effort by Francis.

But yes, if your top scorer who also is a 93% free throw shooter, is struggling. Your job as a coach is literally to find ways to get him through that.

Baffling that’s some hot take to some on here.

At minimum find a way to get the kid to the free throw line, good lord.

Don’t think Rut even watched the game, else he’d realize Tariq’s off night had nothing to do with Pike.

Damon 2.0 is Lino. He is at Rutgers today but TKR experts (credible) say Pike can't keep him.

I just listened to the UCLA coach talking about how Francis had numerous good looks – – all you can ask from a coach is a scheme that gets him those looks. Francis creates his foul opportunities by juking and stepping through, stopping and starting, etc. if he’s not hitting the mid range, they won’t go for those fakes. I’m not an expert, but frankly, I just don’t think you’re a very good observer of the game to bring up coaching with what happened tonight.

That’s okay, I can’t wait for this staff to get updated with a modern offense that runs motion and dictates action instead of allowing the opposing team to dictate what happens on that side of the floor.

Very excited for the future of R hoops.

Jamal Phillips was just not athletic enough to get better in college though.

Idk, the ucla guards covering him were just better tonight. I don't think x's&o's were the difference, they were bigger and at least as athletic (if not more) and were in TF's kitchen all game.

Yeah idk…get the ball out of his hands, run an off ball screen for him, force a rotation from the defense, draw a foul and get to the line or dish.

It’s not crazy complex, our staff just doesn’t do it.

But sure if you’re just going to run on ball action and iso situations, you’re going to struggle when you’re playing a bigger more talented team…

Agreed, tonight was more about the jimmies and the joes than the X’s and O’s. Tonight was prime example for us the level that we need to get the talent level up to. We may not be able to get UCLA talent level, but we have to at least aspire, strive, try and make that the goal for this program. If we start Zrno, Powers, Buchanan and Ogbole to go with Francis next year then Pike is fired for sure because that is another losing season. We need to upgrade, it’s like we have an IPhone 6 and need to upgrade to at least the iPhone 15 at a minimum next year.

Absolutely. He blew a couple of well schemed open looks from 3 off the front of the rim and was short on a few others. Just didn’t have any gas tonight, he usually has a quiet swagger about him and that was missing. Could be fatigue. Could be sick - it’s still March.

I thought this was Ogbole's best game, all things considered. It wasn't the most overwhelming statistical performance, but the most telling number is 32 minutes played. Seemed like he operated with more confidence on both ends and was really impressive moving his feet in the instances where he got switched onto UCLA guards.


Pike seemed to suggest that Ogbole might not be back next year, per Fonseca, which I think would be a shame. Could be a seriously decent B1G backup.
