No. 19 Men’s Lacrosse Faces St. John’s Tuesday

After giving up 17 goals in their first game, the Johnnies have been pretty good on defense, allowing just 12, 8, 8, 11, and 11 goals. They’re just 2-4 on the season, against weak competition, but with our struggling offense, this could make for a competitive game.
There has been one common opponent in Hofstra. St. John’s defeated the Pride 9-8, while Rutgers beat them 11-8 in what was a tight game.
My guess is that the Scarket Knights come out angry and determined after getting manhandled by Princeton, and jump out to a quick lead. But let’s see if they can sustain it.

Game on in my office and all I can say, is Brecht clearly had a discussion with the team after Princeton. Because they are flying all over the place and laying down some serious hits.
12-2 RU at halftime. Team clearly taking their frustrations from the Princeton game out on a severely inferior St. John's squad.
Seeing 3 on attack makes the entire offense more dynamic. 5 goals mostly from 7 assists from Kurdyla. The more they play together the more the offense is going to get going. Throw in sharp shooting Vorgang and you have the makings of an attack that can put pressure on the defense. Two guys that can go one on one, pass, shoot and finish, and a lethal shooter/finisher. That's the recipe for a potent attack. We didn't get a chance to see it because Princeton won every damn face off but I liked what I saw there from them. A lot. Aiello slid right into Hadyn Sommer's spot in the midfield which is an entirely different look. In a good way. Once he gets going, the offense will form into the shape we hoped it would be. Aiello is a force. One on one with a short stick is a nightmare for the defense. He's going to create early slides which will then give the other guys room to go to the cage or spin the ball to the open man. Funny what happens to an offense when just a few pieces get moved around or added. Aiello didn't even play much but he looked very good. Getting him ready for conference games no doubt.
Great to see Aiello out there and performing at a high level. Definitely a missing piece. Glad we shook off the stink from Princeton and moved forward with an offensive performance. One more OOC then On to conference play. Let’s go!!!
One more tune up before B1G season. Handle business on Saturday just like today so we can focus on the real season.

I wonder how St. Johns is not a top lacrosse program. Good school, good conference, surrounded by lacrosse talent. I guess lack of funding could be an issue. I thought this last coaching hire might do it, but it doesn't appear so
It's crazy to think that Long Island which is a lax Mecca has terrible D1 men's lax teams. Stony Brook and Hofstra have moments but both by and large these days are mediocre and St. John's is historically terrible. Is it just the mere fact that LI isn't really a destination for college in general? Feel like LI is a lot like Jersey in the fact that a lot of LI kids who are smart enough for college leave the area and don't stick around at Stony Brook which is a fine school academically or Hofstra.
In St. John's case it's probably partially funding, and partially the campus. Did you see the surroundings of the field they play on? Not a big draw. SB has gotten better over the years but should still probably be better. Hofstra has no real excuse. They have nice facilities and are funded well. Probably a coaching issue.
Talk about late to the game, St. Johns didn't even have a lacrosse program until 1980. And the world has been recruiting LI since the 60's. UMass had a pipeline from Nassau CC in the 70's and still recruits hard.
And none of the Big10, ACC or Ivy schools are located on LI. You lose a lot right there.
Crazy how USC is in South Central LA while UCLA is in Bel Air/Beverly Hills. Pretty much the LA version of what Temple and Nova is to Philly.

SC’s campus is light rears better than Trmple and St John’s. When SC was built, that was the Beverly Hills. Word had it at one point they considered moving it to where Pepperdine is now. That would have been epic
The reason LI schools aren’t better are the schools themselves.
first off, while St. John’s is technically on Long Island, Queens is not LI. Most kids aren’t dreaming of spending their college years in Queens. It is a decent enough school but the campus leaves a lot to be desired. Up until not too long ago they didn’t even have dorms. It’s just not very appealing for a kid with options, especially one who is local.
Hofstra is a little nicer campus, they have a strong history in lax, an active alumni base, nice facilities and pretty decent institutional support, but again, just not a great campus life. Kids on LI grew up driving through the middle of campus on Hempstead Tpk and there just isn’t a lot of appeal.
LIU actually has a beautiful campus but there is nothing going on around it to hold the interest of the average 18-22 year old. It’s just a sleepy, rich suburb with nothing resembling a college town nearby.
Stony Brook has the most ingredients to potentially separate itself among the LI programs. The university has recently brought in billions in funding and is emerging as the flagship university of the SUNY system. But it still suffers like the other LI school from a lack of campus identity. It was at one point mostly a commuter school, but that is changing, as it’s academic reputation has improved fairly dramatically over the years. The problem is that it still has a commuter school feel and there is not a lot they can do to change that.
In the end, top players on LI are top players in the country and are being recruited by everyone. The local schools are not winning many battles against the likes of B1G, ACC and Ivy schools. They probably have more luck recruiting off the Island, which pretty much negates their geographic advantage of being on LI surrounded by HS talent.

I have been to hundreds of college campuses. Pepperdine is the nicest college campus i have been to.
