1. Best win of the year, hands down. Pike deserves a TON of credit for the game plan and execution. Minnesota plays a tough zone defense, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Rutgers team in recent memory play so well in zone offense. The ball was moving crisply, first around the perimeter and then looking to the foul line, and then either sprayed back out to open shooters, or the guy at the foul line turned and shot or went down hill. We had 22 assists on 25 made FGs, which is incredible.

2. The defense really stepped up tonight. Minnesota runs terrific sets, a lot like the old Princeton offense, and they murdered us on backdoor cuts in the first half, but we tightened up in the second half, didn’t give up any backdoor cuts, and forced 10 turnovers including on 6 straight possessions to propel an 11-0 run and give us the lead that we would never relinquish. We forced 15 TOs overall.

3. Game ball obviously goes to Tariq Francis, who scored 29 points — a Rutgers record in the Big Ten Tournament — and got us buckets at every stage when we needed points. He was 9-16 from the field, including 5-7 from deep, 6-7 from the line, and added 4 assists. He also played stellar defense, including forcing that charge in the midst of that crucial 11-0 run.

4. But we also got huge contributions from several other guys. Manny Ogbole was huge on the inside tonight, providing post offense, grabbing timely rebounds, and protecting the rim. He finished with 10 points (on 5-6 FGs), 7 rebounds and 3 blocks. He would not let Minnesota get easy buckets on the inside.

5. Darren Buchanan had a rough first half after getting in foul trouble, but he was stellar in the 2nd half, and he ended up with 6 points (all in the second frame), 5 rebounds, a whopping 7 assists, and 0 TOs, all while playing great defense with 3 fouls. He did not pick up another foul in 17 second half minutes.

6. Jamichael Davis — let’s call him JMake tonight — played a terrific game. Lino Mark had an off night, as he struggled against the zone, but JMake stepped up and knocked down gigantic threes, steadied the offense, and was the floor leader. He also sunk four straight FTs to help seal the victory down the stretch, finishing with 13 points (3-7 FGs, 3-6 threes, 4-4 FTs), 6 assists, and 0 TOs.

7. Harun Zrno chipped in with 6 points on 2 threes, but he also played solid defense, nabbing 2 steals and preventing those backdoor cuts in the 2nd half.

8. Another point about Pike. On this night, the rotations were sound. I know people didn’t like the Badalau minutes in the first half, but Dortch is hobbled, Nwuli was out due to a foot/ankle issue, and Buchanan got his second foul with 11 minutes left in the first half, so Pike really had no choice there. In the 2nd half, Pike rode with Ogbole, Buchanan, Zrno, JMake, and Francis for at least the last 8 or 10 minutes of the game. They’re the group that caused the 6 straight TOs and the 11-0 run, but after Minnesota scored, Pike called a good timeout, settled the guys down, and then stuck with the same lineup.

9. On to face a surging UCLA team. This will be a very tough game. Let’s shock the world.

Surging UCLA team for sure, No. 1 offense in America over their last five.

Wish we had Nwuli, I’m worried about guarding the 4 spot in particular. 80% of UCLAs minutes there go to Eric Dailey (6’8) or Tyler Bilodeau (6’9), neither of whom I think Grant can really check

Is there any chance Dortch will improve enough to play more tomorrow and that Nwuli might return? Anyone? Could really use their depth and athleticism against UCLA, where those things are more important than they were against a depleted MN team.

A lot of us were begging Pike to press in this game, and while it wasn't constant, it was much more than the first time we played these guys. You could see they were completely gassed at the end.

It was stark the difference between Buchanan on the floor vs on the bench.

Geez, Francis was red hot.

Say we lose tonight and finish 14-19. Any chance in hell the Crown Tournament gives us a look? They have to take a few Big 10 teams and the candidates would likely be RU, Northwestern, Minnesota, and Washington. Gotta figure USC and Indiana in the NIT with all the teams above them going to the big dance. Oregon, UMD, and PSU are done. Out of those 4 teams, we're likely the last choice so we'd need a few of them to decline. But right now, we are playing well enough to deserve a little consideration. It's a shame we didn't take that home game against MSU. We'd have a much better chance.

You did a great job highlighting the great things last night including the ball movement against the zone , the second half defense and forcing turnovers . You also gave the proper praise to Francis , Manny , JMike and Buchanan and Zrno ( who had 8 points not 6) . With Manny we saw the best 3 minutes of his career against MSU in that comeback and then again last night. His rim protection and altering shots had Ben tremendous to watch and sparks the offense. That is now 2 of the last 3 games and we would like that to continue. .
The point I want to make is we can play even better , maybe not Francis , JMike or Manny but everybody else. Lino didn’t finish last night in the first half . ZRno missed open 3’s in the first half , Badalau missed a wide open corner 3 and was a hot potato with the ball instead of attacking the zone. Powers had 2-3 bad turnovers with passes against the zone and couldn’t hit his shots even with a set up 3 coming out of a timeout.and was beat back door in back to back possessions. Buchanan picked up 2 cheap fouls and sat and then came back in and picked up another causing a 3 point play so he gave you nothing in the first half. Dylan missed his open 3 and was ineffective for most of the first half. . So all that happened in the first half , so I am optimistic each of them will bounce back today and play much better . Zrno and Buchanan had much better second halves but the rest will show it tonight. They are freshman still and will learn and they have the talent to show it.

I did not like the Badalau sub or the amount of playing time he got. He still cannot hit a shot ( all mental) and he doesn’t do enough rebounding or passing to impact the game positively. Manny could have played more minutes as he wasn’t in foul trouble or Pike could have played zone in the first half. . His production is not justifying his playing time. I learned Nwuili was hurt but still it didn’t justify it . Hope it doesn’t continue. Otherwise really well prepared coached game by Pike and the guys who keep on fighting and never give up.

I don’t disagree with most of what you say here. On Badalau, I don’t think anybody WANTS him playing 11 minutes. But Manny ended up playing 28 minutes, and I’d venture a guess that that is about his limit, so with him needing a rest, Buchanan having two fouls, and BOTH Dortch and Nwuli sidelined, there wasn’t really another option.

Hoping Dortch and Nwuli can give it a go tonight so we don’t have to see BADalau on the court again.

Even with 8 less spots in the Crown, I imagine there’s a pretty good chance we’ll end up getting offered a spot in the NIT based on last years bracket and the teams that reportedly declined. Can’t imagine Pike would entertain it though unless we somehow played our way to a home game in round one.

Amazing how many people don’t get this. It’s like they’re not watching the game.

14-19 schools of any name shouldnt be going to post season

“Shouldn’t” for who? The fans’ perception? What we think “should be” won’t be a factor in the decision, in my opinion.

Considering how bad Rutgers’ track record is at mid-major venues, I’d think the last thing Pike would sign up for would be a road trip to play SF Austin or something like that. If the team wants to keep playing and it seemed likely we’d draw a home game, Pike might consider.

We won’t be one of the 2 teams selected as At Large for the Crown, but I can’t see any scenerio where we would turn that down with the current group now that it’s only 8 teams. Winning one game now earns the players $50,000. Winning 2 games gets gets $100,000. And winning 3 gets $300k in NIL. Outside of NBA bound kids, whose turning that down?

I understand. It's just unfortunate because the product we have on the court now would likely perform well against NIT and Crown level competition.

Not to be negative, but we never seem to perform well at cupcake venues. Unsure how the NIT bracket works but I can’t see Pike signing up to travel to one. If last year is any indicator, there’s a pretty good chance we’d have an option to play in the NIT if we wanted.

because post season used to be about it meaning something and accomplishment..same thing with 6-6 schools going to bowls..so fans pump up medicore season with meaningless games where half of the teams are not interested. and 14-19 schools are not in contention for the crown..even if it was 16 we wouldnt be in it

Don’t remember what the bubble looked like last year but 12 win Providence turned down an NIT bid and San Jose State (NET in the 140s) got an at large bid along with quite a few other mid-major teams that were clearly asked after all the Rutgers type teams had declined.

I agree with you that playing in second tier post season events like the NIT bears no resemblance to “accomplishment”, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t isolated sets of circumstances where there are benefits to a team. If Francis and a good number of others are planning to stick around and Pike was going to get a home game for round - the extra reps and practice wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing.

Agree about the Crown. We won’t be picked for that one. I hadn’t realized they reduced the field to 8. That was a smart move as most teams (unless they have a bunch of kids getting ready for the draft) won’t decline it anymore. Not sure how the money is split but the players are somehow sharing $50k for each win they get in that thing plus a 150k bonus if they win the whole thing. Why turn that down?
