Would have never have bet on that. FB wins a Championship and basketball won’t make NCAA. Interesting.
They have had an underwhelming string of mediocre head coaches. Mike Davis got them back to playing really good ball but then he was a .500 coach.

Maybe their AD's just cant pick a winning coach

Becoming clear that Iowa may have lucked out not getting DeVries.

I believe McCollum was also Indiana’s top choice. Said no and wanted the Iowa job. Devries also wanted Iowa, but that was done when McCollum accepted before the Missouri game. Indiana had to throw the bag at Devries and paint it like he was the guy all along. Who knows how it all went down, but just what I heard from someone who’s somewhat connected to this stuff 🤷‍♂️

IU has the#18 ranked class coming in next season.
I suspect they will improve over time with their recruiting edge...money,Blueblood legacy, and top talent producing region.
The BIG has 8 schools in top 25 recruiting classes for 2026.
More worried bout Iowa next season than IU.

Chronologically there's just no way that's true. Pretty sure McCollum didn't even talk to Iowa until after Drake was eliminated. By then Devries had already been hired for a week. Had Indiana waited would McCollum still have said no? Idk about that, Indiana is still a pretty highly regarded job.

From a pretty reliable source. I’m not sure if IU spoke to McCollum or where he was in their pecking order but Iowa wasn’t Devries top choice. He never even spoke to Goetz once and ghosted her every time she reached out. Never returned her calls or anything to speak about Iowa job. Rumor is Iowa even used Kirk with relationship with Jared to reach out and nothing came from it. from what I was told devries and his agent used Iowa job to leverage more $ from IU.

now was McCollum Beth’s top choice, probably, maybe? Who knows. I don’t blame goetz for doing her due diligence reaching out to both but devries made her choice easier and in the end I’m glad because I feel like we definitely got the better guy.

That’s probably more accurate as to what happened. However it went down, Iowa hit the home run hire

I remember after his last year at Drake question would be does Tucker go pro or follow dad to wvu. Saw lot of mocks projected 2nd with few late first.

big question with stirtz was how he adjust to big 10 play which he didn’t miss a beat and still considered 1st rd pick unlike devries who I’d be shocked if he’s even taken in 2nd rd this upcoming draft.

From what I was told Iowa never had any interest in DeVries at all

Exactly right.

Devries 3/18:

McCollum 3/24:

Once I learned more about McCollum last season, the more I knew he was absolutely the better guy to go after.

100% needed to be option 1a, 1b, 2, and 3 on the coaching list.

Glad we got him and how well he does will be 90% dependent on the NIL funds that he's able to leverage. Full confidence that he'll get the BEST out of his guys in the room and play a style of ball that maximizes our NIL limitations

DeVries is still a good coach. Watched a lot of games with him at Drake and McCollum as well. To be fair in today’s game I can’t imagine coming to a new school and trying to incorporate 12-13 new players. In a few months time. It’s not an excuse but he won a ton of games at Drake and his teams were gritty and well coached. Now he might certainly fail as IU might keep the carousel going and fire him after 3 years. It’s the way of the world. Mac decided to bring 4-5 guys with him to make the transition easier, one of course being an all conference pt guard. Like them both, and honestly hope both succeed just 1 more than the other!
