I have tried unsuccessfully for years to watch college softball. I love baseball, but for the life of me I can't get into softball. I will watch women's hoops a little though. I don't have daughters and expect that's the path most men who watch softball took to enjoy it.

College softball in general is no longer dominated by 250 lb porkers; most teams have rosters dominated by attractive as well as athletic young ladies. Yes, there are still those that can still throw the "big weight" but for the most part they inhabit the the circle. The current brand of college softball is fun to watch and the players take it very seriously, and seem to be having fun at the same time!!

I’ve got nothing against softball, those that play it, or those that support it. I’m also not gonna b*tch about the money being spent on it because more power to those that enjoy it.

All that said, it really is the ultimate dumbed down sport that was created to give people a chance to play baseball that weren’t capable of actually playing baseball.

Can’t hit the ball? No problem, we’ll make it bigger

Pitcher throwing too hard? No problem, we’ll make ‘em toss it underhand

Can’t run? No problem, make the base paths shorter

Cant hit it out of the park? Pull the fences in 150 feet.

There are some extremely talented girls that play, but the sport as a whole reminds me a lot more of backyard baseball than an actual sport

I’ll watch if State is on TV and I happen across it.
Have watched more in the last 10-15 years than anytime prior.
Helps we’ve been competitive.

“Dumbed down”? Yeah….

I guess you haven’t noticed that most elite MLB hitters can’t hardly touch elite softball pitching.

So just be clear, you don’t think the Dodgers could beat a good college softball team in a friendly?

If it were slow pitch, I'd watch. I want to see 25-24 scores with lots of HRs. Don't care about some beefarillo slinging it underhand.

I watch from time to time, but for none of the reasons listed above. My wife is a former college softball player, and she watches religiously. I do not get into like she does, but it can be entertaining at times 😎

I’ll watch occasionally if State has a good team.

All I'm gonna say is that someone throwing a ball 70+ mph (underhanded or not) from 43 feet away is not something I'm going to denigrate.

my daughter is a pitcher. At release, it’s more like 36 or 37 ft away. It comes in FAST.

as far as Seinfeld goes…

it’s not a dumbed down version of baseball. It is its own sport that resembles baseball. Different strategies, different skill sets, different dynamics. It is far and away a more exciting and faster sport. **** on it if you want, it’s your loss and you’re missing out on an amazing sport that State is actually good at right now.

It's a bit tricky because the start times are very similar to baseball, but they have a huge home series this weekend against #1 Tennessee, who are 24-0. First huge test of the season.

State has a pretty good team this year, ranked #11 in one poll and we play a series at home vs Tennessee who is ranked # 1
Would be huge to win 2 this weekend.
Hoping for one, TN is undefeated and they're really good. I think Pickens is back too and she's basically unhittable.

I officiated baseball for years, and got into fastpitch softball later in my career. I enjoyed the Fastpitch games much better because they moved faster and the players were more engaged in the game during the entire contest. I like to watch college FP as much as I like to watch college BB.

It's hard watching the slow pace of baseball compared to softball. The pitch clock has been a god-send. We had an inning last over an hour this week against Tulane. You don't see that in softball. After having girls who played a lot of softball, it's been an adjustment moving back to watching baseball more.

My daughter grew up playing everything and plays on an SEC team now, not softball. So I got more accustomed to being around the women's sports and actually respect them much more than the men's sports but that's from a biased view I guess. We watch every State softball game whether it's watching or rewatching, baseball also. If you're not watching our softball team right now you are missing out, they are very good and fun to watch.

Facts are, 80% of people who get into most women's sports have a daughter that plays. On a national level (TV mainly) they just don't get an audience for whatever reason. Don't shame the messenger.

I hate softball but one of my kids are now showing interest, so I'm sure I'll like it more at that point. It's pretty crazy how unbelievably biased we can be if we don't intentionally work against it.

I really don’t care about softball in general but I often watch Mississippi State softball simply because I’m a fan of anything Mississippi State. Plus there is so little original programming on TV that’s worth watching, it’s easy to get engrossed in a ballgame.

You realize, there are more girls in the world than guys right? And there's only a 5% difference in males vs females in sports participation and only a 10% viewership difference in college athletics between men and women. Football carries that difference.

My wife and daughter played softball so they love going and watching games. I started watching with my wife and really enjoy watching now. It is a much faster pace game than baseball. We have been to one game so far this year. The fire department was parked outside center field with the firemen sitting on top. We've noticed on TV that they have shown up at a few games. We plan on going to one game this weekend.

You left out pitching from 17'6" closer

Beat me to it. Also, it's harder to hit a softball for distance than a baseball. Sure, it's harder to actually hit a baseball, but it's still harder to get comparable distances. If you hit a softball and baseball in the sweet spot with the same swing, force, etc., the baseball will go a lot farther.

Same goes with throwing a baseball vs softball. Equal force applied the baseball travels much faster and farther. Yes, fast-pitch runners have much shorter basepaths, but they also have to beat out throws from much closer in. And when you factor in base-stealing, fastpitch softball players can't fully release from the base until the ball reaches home plate...no taking leads.

Clearly, there are accommodations to make the sport more accessible for women, but the differences are often mitigated by the differing dimensions and rules guiding play.

FWIW, a 70-mph softball pitch feels like a 100-mph baseball pitch due to reduced reaction time. Elite D1 softball pitchers throwing a fastball riser are about the equivalent of a 110 mph fastball from a college baseball pitcher. How many college pitchers have you heard of that can throw as high as 110? Hell, how many pros can?

For hitters it's about reaction time, but also late-movement. Fastpitch softball pitchers can get more movement than baseball pitchers due to the windmill, underhand combined with the intense wrist snap on release. Yes, the softball is a bigger target, but when you factor in the rest, a case can be made that it might be more difficult to hit against a fastpitch softball pitcher than a baseball pitcher.

Another thing to consider when it comes to base-running...though baseball basepaths are 30' longer, with primary and secondary leads around 18-20 ft of that is already closed before the fastpitch softball player can even leave the base, On top of that, I imagine there is a good deal more momentum established by the baseball player than what the softball player can achieve when her release point doesn't begin until the pitch reaches the plate. They can establish a small amount beyond standstill takeoff by starting with one foot behind the bag before the pitch, then moving forward with that back foot across the bag to time it so that they release completely at the moment the ball reaches the plate. But even that is a risk, because if the ump decides you left the bag even an instant too early, the runner is out.

Tradeoffs, my friend. And watching fastpitch softball played at a high level can be very entertaining.

1. I was a coach once at the high school and club level.
2. I just like being thorough, recognizing people can read or ignore at their pleasure. And when making a case, it's not always best to be succinct.
3. I like to debate and love to research...not so much talk. I chat far more than I talk. Am much more a listener, though when I choose to engage, I try to back up my POV.
