Team USA might not even make it out of Pool Play now.

Uh, no.

Because the World Cup has been around almost 100 years and makes sense. It started around the time when soccer had spread widely and international travel was becoming much easier.

This was basically created by MLB to drum up something 150+ years after baseball was invented.

I don't see it as remotely similar, but I understand opinions are like arseholes. If you're enthralled by this competition, please enjoy away.
People didn't care as much about the early World Cups either. It took a few decades for the event to grow.

The World Baseball Classic is only 20 years old and has already captivated every country that plays baseball other than the USA, and it's starting to get a lot of attention here.

In 2023, it ended with Shohei striking out Mike Trout to win it. I hope this year can provide an equal level of pageantry.

He’s right though. If this was a World Cup caliber tournament USA would run rule everyone other than Japan.
That's not how baseball has ever worked. Sometimes the worst MLB team has a good day and beats the best one. Sometimes a team full of MLB players pretending to be Italian can beat a team of MLB All-Stars from America.

You're also underestimating the amount of good MLB talent from Venezuela and the Dominican Republic. Either of those can go toe-to-toe with the USA team in talent.

That Dominican team may seriously be the best batting lineup ever.

Anyway, if people don't like the tournament, fine, don't watch it. But it is not a meaningless exhibition to any baseball fans outside of the US. Shohei himself said that winning the WBC 2023 was a bigger deal than winning the World Series.

I truly, truly do not give a **** whether the US advances or not. Can't say I knew this tournament existed until it was all over Fox. Brazil pitched a guy who had apparently played for 7 different countries in his "career".

These important sporting events that are just created out of whole cloth to generate money and/or interest are just not interesting to me anymore.

Sorry, I'll see myself out...
It's 100x better than spring training ball and that's what you got right now. Also, great way to expand the game.

He was warming up old man Kershaw late in the game, gonna give him some playing time. Someone told Derosa we haven't advanced yet. Kershaw sat down and Miller got up. Wow!

The Mexico game in Houston was like an away game for the US. There's probably more fans around the world tuned into this than US baseball fans. Even so, if you like baseball, this Dominican team is must watch TV.
I see what you're angling for but that place was insane after Aaron Judge's homer. Sounded like the roof was going to come off the entire time he rounded the bases so maybe Mexico fans were cheering for him too****

Not even close. In any country.
Pat I know you like soccer but that’s not correct.

Japan, Taiwan, the US, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic baseball is far more popular than soccer. It’s on par with soccer in South Korea, Panama, Nicaragua, and Venezuela.

sj there a way for Mexico & Italy to both advance. We could be screwed if they’re smart. Similar situation in a World Cup soccer tournament 50 years ago. Last game of pool play & both advanced with a tie. So they just kicked the ball around for 90 minutes for 0-0 draw. This is why the last round of pool play is played concurrently since then.
The difference is baseball is a game of integrity and soccer is soccer.

Yes I know about the Black Sox and steroids and corked bats and illegal substances but I don't care about any of that

Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Venezuela, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Panama, Nicaragua, Mexico, Colombia, and the Caribbean parts of the Netherlands really care about this tournament and desperately want to win.

USA and Canada kinda care but it's more niche. We would be the only two with a significant population who likes baseball but not this particular tournament.

Czech Republic is a team made up of plumbers and electricians who are passionate about it, but not a lot of baseball fans there. Great story though.

Australia cares a little, but baseball is not big there. (They are probably the best and most passionate sports country in the world on a per capital basis, punching above their weight in everything.) Brazil is in a similar boat.

Italy, Israel, and Great Britain are fake teams almost entirely full of Americans. They should either field real teams like the Czechs or stop having them.

That covers the 20 participating countries.
How fake are those teams? Do they just let anybody that can prove they had a relative there at one time play for them if they're good? And what is Israel filling their team with? I wouldn't think there would be that many players that are jewish or can trace an ancestor to Israel Are they just letting anybody that's circumsized play?

Nah. Shoeless Joe sold out for peanuts. At least the soccer players fixing games are doing it so cartel members don't castrate them.

I got college baseball, and that's all the baseball my feeble mind can handle for the most part in March.

Me thinking this is kinda boring and stupid is just my opinion obviously. That's what we do here on this board.

Frankly I'm a little disturbed by the overly positive vibes for this tournament. I expect better from the SPS community.

Any Jewish player can sign up for Israel, and it's almost entirely American minor leaguers. In the last couple WBCs, people often commented that it was a little uncomfortable to have what's essentially a "religious team" playing among national teams, but you can guess that the rhetoric about them (either pro or con) has been very different and passionate in 2026. They end up locking every reddit thread about Israel's games.

The Italian team is Americans of Italian descent. I think there's 1 actual Italian.

The British team is Americans of British descent along with 6 Bahamans.

I'd rather get rid of the fake teams and let the Bahamas have their own (if they qualify). It would be one thing if Italy, Israel, and Britain had 1 or 2 Americans to help out, but an entire team is just silly.

You are mistaken. The World Baseball Classic is a much bigger deal in Japan than the World Cup. Just Google the ratings.
Of course, the WBC is played, in part, in Japan. Which has an enormous effect on televisions ratings. The 2002 World Cup, that’s almost a quarter century old, was played in Korea and Japan’s group stage game drew 62 million viewers. 21 years later, the WBC championship between Japan & USA drew 100 million viewers. Not exactly apples to apples because of tourney stage and time of the game, but I’m not sure you’re on as solid ground as you think you are. Baseball might be more popular than soccer in Japan but it’s closer than you think and it’s not close at all in other countries.

Israel's rules more or less make sense to me. With how much open antisemitism there is, even in circles that would otherwise be considered "polite" society, Jewish people do have a different kind of connection to Israel that other people don't have to their ancestors lands.

Italy has almost 60M people and the UK has north of 60M people. Definitely small compared to the US, but not so small that it's not reasonable for them to have their own team that doesn't rely on americans. But the Bahamas basically can't have a team if they aren't allowed to play on somebody else's. Just too small. Pretty amazing how good some of the other island and central/south american teams can be with 10M and less populations.

I think they are hoping that it grows the game in the fake teams country and they eventually become not fake teams but until then it gives a lot of minor leaguers great opportunity for high leverage exposure.

I did a little research and all of the top 9 players in the MLB in WAR in 2025 (plus #11) are participating in the WBC. So the idea that most of the stars sit out was true 20 years ago, but not anymore:

Watching this Mexico/Italy game like I watch pool games on Saturday on GameChanger trying to figure out when we might play on Sunday. This would have never happened to the 2026 Diamond Elite Force Baseball Dragons 10u - Red.

Our bats are All Stars. The handful of pitchers who are All Stars are on a strict pitch count, but the majority of the USA arms are guys I'm not familiar with at all.

And while I'm at it, did they put Kershaw on the staff just as one final honor, or are they gonna let him pitch? I figured mop up duty in Game 1 or 2 would have been ideal to bring him in.

To be fair, both Paul Skenes and Tarik Skubal (reigning Cy Young winners) are on the roster.

Pitch counts yes, that's unfortunate but it is what it is. Skubal said that the tournament needs to move to the summer so their arms are able to go longer. They could do a 10-day break for the WBC (would probably need to be fewer teams) in June/July instead of a 3-day break for the All-Star Game if they want to do that.

Italy up 5-0 which means ... the USA will advance! (Unless Italy loses 6-5 in deep extra innings or something weird)
