Team USA might not even make it out of Pool Play now.

Mark DeRosa didn’t understand how the rules work for advancing so now he’s put Team USA on the brink of elimination. If Mexico beats Italy in a low scoring game they will be eliminated. What an idiot.

He started a bunch of the bench players thinking they could cruise and not even have to win the game against Italy.

after this is over, the Cleveland Browns will be contacting him about a management or coaching job. Yeah, I know he knows nothing about football, but evidently neither do any current Browns management or coaches, and it hasn't been a requirement in their organization for a long time.

Why do you need these rules for advancing in any sport. Baseball should just be a regular tournament bracket, why complicate it with points for this and that. Same for Ryder Cup, Davis Cup, etc etc. , just base it on head to head and go with it..............

Looking at tiebreakers, if Mexico beats Italy, I think USA is screwed. Tiebreakers after head to head are runs allowed by defensive outs. USA has given up 17 runs, Italy 10 and Mexico 7. Granted they still have to play each other, but if it's not a very high scoring game, I think USA will get left out.

If it's a 3-way tie and they're all 1-1, how are you going to advance 2 teams using head to head?

You wouldn't know it based on the coverage, but we aren't close to the best team in this tournament.

How was there no one affiliated with team USA going “hey boss- why you playing the bench today?”

How could he have possibly thought their ticket was punched when there were two other teams with one loss or no losses?

I think it's time to check his gambling activities. What was the payoff for betting that the US wouldn't advance out of pool play?

Never underestimate how stupid some coaches can be. I think he just figured 1 loss would surely get you through, and we beat Mexico so they can't jump us. But of course, in a 2-way tie, they can jump us and probably will.

Points for/against, margin of victory. Baseball tournaments played all over the country every weekend just using brackets

With all the MLB contracts involved, any chance part of it is limitations some players might have in terms of innings played or perhaps guaranteeing innings for bench players to sign on to play?

But pool play means more games. Which means more money. Which is what the glorified exhibition is all about anyway.

Wonder how much money they cost themselves if the US doesn't advance? Japan is rich and cares about baseball. Mexico, Dominican republic, and Cuba are not rich but care and Mexico is big. What other countries have big baseball cultures? Do the snow mexicans care? Or are they all in on hockey? Other Asian countries outside of Japan?

It's only runs/out in the games involving the tied teams.

So we've given up 11 runs in 54 outs. We need Italy to win or score at least 6 runs, or Mexico to score at least 5. All of that assumes a 9 inning game. If it goes into extras, we might need more.

It's only runs in games between the teams involved in the tie, not all the games. Those totals are US 11, Italy 6, Mexico 5.

If Italy wins, we advance.
If Mexico wins but scores only 1-4 runs, we are eliminated.
If Mexico wins and scores 5+, we advance because I guess we win whatever the next tiebreaker is. Good thing we put six runs on the board last night or we would be really screwed. PCA might have saved the USA.

I truly, truly do not give a **** whether the US advances or not. Can't say I knew this tournament existed until it was all over Fox. Brazil pitched a guy who had apparently played for 7 different countries in his "career".

These important sporting events that are just created out of whole cloth to generate money and/or interest are just not interesting to me anymore.

Sorry, I'll see myself out...

Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Venezuela, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Panama, Nicaragua, Mexico, Colombia, and the Caribbean parts of the Netherlands really care about this tournament and desperately want to win.

USA and Canada kinda care but it's more niche. We would be the only two with a significant population who likes baseball but not this particular tournament.

Czech Republic is a team made up of plumbers and electricians who are passionate about it, but not a lot of baseball fans there. Great story though.

Australia cares a little, but baseball is not big there. (They are probably the best and most passionate sports country in the world on a per capital basis, punching above their weight in everything.) Brazil is in a similar boat.

Italy, Israel, and Great Britain are fake teams almost entirely full of Americans. They should either field real teams like the Czechs or stop having them.

That covers the 20 participating countries.

The Mexico game in Houston was like an away game for the US. There's probably more fans around the world tuned into this than US baseball fans. Even so, if you like baseball, this Dominican team is must watch TV.

Maybe Italy's coach doesn't understand the rules and

sj there a way for Mexico & Italy to both advance. We could be screwed if they’re smart. Similar situation in a World Cup soccer tournament 50 years ago. Last game of pool play & both advanced with a tie. So they just kicked the ball around for 90 minutes for 0-0 draw. This is why the last round of pool play is played concurrently since then.

Uh, no.

Because the World Cup has been around almost 100 years and makes sense. It started around the time when soccer had spread widely and international travel was becoming much easier.

This was basically created by MLB to drum up something 150+ years after baseball was invented.

I don't see it as remotely similar, but I understand opinions are like arseholes. If you're enthralled by this competition, please enjoy away.
