Related to the ability to provide rev share?
There is no rev share at UNC for any sport outside of FB, MBB, WBB and Baseball.
We are looking to greatly increase scholarship counts. UNC has stated publicly we are going from 338 schollies last year to 532 this year across all 28 sports. That is a 194 increase.
But UNC will have well over 700 athletes who are eligible for scholarship. So some schollies will not be funded in year one. We know that FB, MBB and Baseball are going to full allotment. That is 44 of the 194. That means that there are 150 among all other programs.
The allowable increase in Men's Lacrosse has skyrocketed from 12.6 last season to 48 this season, which is the roster limit for dressed out players. So UNC could add the money associated with 35 scholarships. And MLax was an "equivalency sport" meaning that a single scholarship could be divided between multiple players, so your grant-in-aid for a role-playing starter was probably a half scholarship or a third of a scholarship. Only the top stars on the team were able to get a full ride.
So that will change. You can assume that the entire starting lineup and the most coveted recruits are now getting full rides. But you can also assume that there are players and recruits who are still getting partial rides or nothing, as it is likely the case that MLax is not fully funded in year one. To what extent that is true I have no idea.
So back to the point about this recruiting class: we probably brought tons more scholarship money to the table than in seasons past. I think UNC was likely a leader on Lax scholarship funding nationally, as the SEC is not in this sport and the number of B1G teams who care about Lax is pretty small. and some B1G teams like Rutgers and Maryland are still not in great financial shape. So I assume the number of teams who decided to go this route is pretty small. Ivy League schools have no schollies, but they can compete with need-based scholarships that provide discounts up to and over $200K in yearly household income.
My guess on schools that might be competing with UNC on scholarship increases: ND, cuse, UVA, Johns Hopkins, OSU, dook, Penn St, maybe Maryland and Rutgers.
In regards to revenue share, I read Penn St devoted $50K in rev share to MLax. And Johns Hopkins is DIII in all sports except MLax and WLax, but they opted into rev share, which means whatever revenue their rev sharing is only for those sports.
but rev share was not a part of the equation. Some players can and will get NIL deals on their own based on their marketability to Lax affiliated businesses. There is probably some UNC-directed NIL from UNC booster owned businesses, but that is likely a small amount.
UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham broke down how the school will be sharing athletic revenue with its sports programs Friday.
