On the staff? He doesn't come on your staff; he assembles his staff as HC. Give him the keys and let him drive it. Great interview, by the way. Makes me wonder just how badly Zinn and Tate want elite talent. It's one thing to say it, another to go after it. The interview makes it seem like he'd take a phone call.

Rutgers will never fail to miss an opportunity.

Greatest American wrestlers of all time: Dan Gable, John Smith, Jordan Burroughs, and Cael Sanderson. That's the list. One of them just gave an interview saying that he wants to be a coach, a leader in his community, and lives an hour from Piscataway.

JB sounds so knowledgeable and passionate on NJ wrestling too… not sure if he can change the trajectory/culture of a program the same magnitude Gable did for Iowa, Cael for PSU, and Taylor for Okie State, but damn that would be exciting…

No, not likely he would have the same impact, but he's a tremendous upgrade if he would even consider the job. That said, I would be shocked to see Rutgers offer. I don't believe he would consider coming as second fiddle to Goodale, nor should he. As WhoRU? already said, he would want and need to assemble his own coaching staff. That doesn't preclude him from keeping any current staff, but I suspect he would want to hire coaches who would give him the best chance of success. We can dream, but my guess is "long live the status quo".

This is an absolute no brainer and he’s the guy you break the bank on. If RU can pay Knox seven figures JB should be on staff yesterday with transition plan in place. We would be top 5 program within two years. Recruiting classes would be like nothing we’ve ever seen.

What would your plan for Goody be? Choices are ask him to step down, encourage him to transition to another position at Rutgers, let him go, or other?

If he retires as coach he can’t work for ru for 6 mos because of state pension rules

Burroughs could go to Cal State Fullerton and turn their program into a contender. He’s probably the biggest name in the sport. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s more of a household name than Cael or Taylor.

I can't provide a case either way. I would like to see him take charge at Rutgers, and have little doubt he would draw talent like we haven't seen before. He also knows how to train for high-level competition. I would hope he would put it all together - technique, strength, mindset. And he's a Jersey guy. But he will need a staff that is also highly regarded and an administration to support them. This may be all too much to ask of Rutgers.

Burroughs could get any coach he wants and if administration was willing to break the bank to get him here, I highly doubt they’d draw the line at who his assistant coaches are.

I don’t know if he’d come here or not but he’s an immediate program changer and like others said, he’d turn any school he goes to into a top 5 team in the country within a few years.

JB isn’t joining anyone’s staff . If he coaches in college its going to be his show and his show alone , he doesnt place nice with others anyone it could be a disaster

This was a great interview! I listened during a workout last week. Could listen to Burroughs talk all things wrestling for hours. Reflecting on that '06 class was fun. I sometimes forget how many monsters came from that group of state champs alone..

Those pegging him as our potential next coach -- where do you get this from? My impression at this point is that he might be starting to realize that running a successful club is best suited for his goals/personality type; no higher ups to report to, no recruiting trail to go on... talent comes to him off of name alone.
If what he says holds, the club could also become a solid hotbed for athletes training freestyle in the college offseason. Building South Jersey wrestling back to its former glory could really be all he wants out of the sport right now (even if he doesn't know the answers on how to support the private vs. public argument). Good for him if he does. If he wanted more, I am sure he would have already gone for it. I don't see him coming onto anywhere as an assistant to "learn the ropes."

Finally! Someone said JB is a tremendous talent, but not a tremendous human.
I met JB a few times. Seemed like a solid/nice guy that has clearly dedicated his life to the sport. Although I’m not suggesting that means squat. But go talk to JB for 10 minutes and then go talk to Cael. Clearly having a glowing personality is not a prerequisite for being a top college coach.

You think the Brands Bros and Cael play nice with others? Those dudes come across as if they are from another planet. Top level Wrestling coaches are a different breed than what you might find on a basketball court or on a football field.

I know 2 people that wrestled for Cael and he’s the complete opposite of his interviews. He’s apparently really funny and cracks a lot of jokes , plays a ton of basketball and video games. If u run into him in an airport or somewhere out in public he’ll stop and have a conversation with anyone.the whole quiet stoic thing is just his public persona

My guess is NJ26 hasn't been around Burroughs much if at all.

yea and point was JB doesn’t have the make up to be on someones staff, especially when he’s 100x more accomplished then the head coach . You all really misjudge or underestimate how big JB ego is

And have been around him at camps and seen how he interacts with his peers? And around other coaches?
Corby he has the same kind of personality as a Michael Jordan /Kobe Bryant/ Tom Brady. His will to win is incomprehensible to the average person, and those kind of personalities aren’t built to be a “coach in waiting“ behind a guy like Goodale. Maybe if they said hey JB youll coach the RTC for 2 years then you re the head coach that may work but even then I see him and the head staff butting heads. If you want JB you hand him the keys to the kingdom day 1 and you let it be his show otherwise you re asking for a headache. This isn’t comparable to his time at UPenn bc he was an athlete still training that was his top priority but the second he becomes a head coach and his priority becomes elevating a program his competitive nature will take over and he’s going to clash with anyone getting in his way

He bought an old CVS for his club and is focused on that. All coaches clash with people in the way

I know it’s right down the street from Camden catholic. What he needs to be doing is sending some kids Vince Jones way bc he coaches at their high school and they havent had a state placer since Burroughs in 06

All these guys are quirky it comes with the territory. I’ve got no issue with Brands, Cael or any other coaches just saying my impression is JB is not a d-bag like some think. Of all the coaches I’ve met I would put Taylor in the category of truly special and a good human being. Loves wrestling and lives to make kids better on and off the mat. OKST hit the lottery. JB would reel in recruits that ordinarily wouldn’t give RU a sniff especially those with world/olympic aspirations.

Who cares? We need a high-level coach who will attract talent. This is all speculation anyway. It was JB saying he's interested in coaching and his comments about Rutgers that have stimulated this discussion. I agree with those who recognize that he would not join a staff as a second fiddle, nor should he. Anyone who knows him well enough might want to speak with him about his thoughts and whether he would even consider Rutgers. But then again, if Rutgers won't pursue him or even entertain the idea, then...
