That's shiddy news, because in a P4 conference, you NEED at least 1 quality big.

I just hope that 6'11 (or 7'0"?) Trevin Jirak is developing and that he's ok with the fact that he only has 3 years of eligibility remaining. Should he have been red shirted?

Much rather have guard additions than big man additions. Cams back, Alvaros back, Jiraks back. Plus the possibility of Banks. Go get some guards

It's gonna be interesting to see how we score without Stritz next year. We struggle now; hopefully with at least one guard addition, next year is less painful.

I thought Hausen was gonna be that scoring guard this year; so much for that. Ben plays 8, sometimes 9. Whoever he lands in this year's portal can't be another Hausen & needs to be good enough to play.

McCollum is on scholarship? Why?
It honestly doesn't matter if he's scholarship or not, all players count toward the total 15 roster spots.

I am assuming McCollum is on scholarhip; I could be wrong. But like Burg stated, no matter what, he counts agasint the 15 man cap.

And when Ben doesn't ever play the 11th-15th men on the bench, it probably doesn't matter much (unless you are concerned with Peyton getting a free ride, which a lot of coaches take advantage of, including Kirk Ferentz, Fran McCaffery, Fred Hoiberg....the list goes on & on).

Not necessarily, imo.

For one, the recruiting and transfer portal pictures are always constantly fluidly changing and updating, so the staff should be able to identify and land someone(s) before Jirak's eligibility runs out - might run into an issue if he decides out of the blue to transfer though, without any real notice to them about doing so.

And lastly, the experience TJ is picking up by playing sparingly this year should only help prepare him going forward.

He'll be honored tomorrow.

Will he be back next year is the question.

Maybe the Hawks will pull off the huuuuuge upset, but I hate that Iowa is stuck with playing Michigan on Senior Night.

Bennett and Tavion both deserve a W on their last regular season game in Carver.

A really good drive and dish point guard and wing player can set up the others for dunks and layups which Coach Ben would love. Nothing like shooting 65%

And it would be great if the drive and dish guys can flush it strong at the end also

BJ was not impactful?
Absolutely BJ was impactful.

As was Horner, Oliver, and Gesell. And Barnes, Dev Marble, JBo, and Perkins (although not true PG's).

I guess the argument is how impactful. Stirtz, Woolridge, and Lester carried their teams.

BJ probably could have, if needed. Out of a talented bunch, he certainly was the guy that made the "winning" plays.

Horner was damn good too.

After that group of 5, there's definitely a drop-off, imo

So with Ethan Harris joining and hopefully tavion back that leaves 2 or 3 spots to add, right,?

Ben has said he wants a pg,maybe 2, and a rim protector.

We can maybe not have too big a dropoff losing stirtz if we add two more decent shooters.
Replacement by committee!

can we afford both?
If you could afford either a serviceable point guard or a rim protector but not both, which would you prefer Ben to bring into the roster for next year? It sounds from Beth that Ben won't have the necessary funds to acquire both. I my self would like to see a rim protector to either back up Jirak or provide starter minutes.

How much does a "serviceable" point guard cost?

I'm sure that a 6'11 C/rim protector type is pricey...wouldn't be surprised if $2M, add another $1M if he also has some skills on offense, but that probably isn't a necessity.

But a competent 6'2 ball-distributor with solid defensive skills shouldn't be more than $700K. They're way more plentiful in the portal.

Tough spot to be in. Lose your star PG and urgently need size to play/guard at the rim. Be ready to fork out some skins for both. Definitely go for a good PG first IMO as I'm hoping Trevin develops and gains confidence.

As for McCullum I am skeptical, but I remember seeing Ben interviewed and asked about him and Ben stated Peyton had graded out as one of the highest rated players. I am not local in Iowa anymore so I have never seen the kid play, but I assume he must be servicable if Ben put him on scholarship when they can clearly afford to pay.

For those hoping Cooper and Alvaro are both gone next year I think you need to rethink that. Don't forget that Cooper is only a redshirt freshman and will probably get a lot better in a true second year (assuming true freshman year he was stunted due to injury). Alvaro I bet will be a lot better with a better understanding of how to play with the physicality of the Big Ten.

I know you need heart guys like Jacob Koch and Joey M, but I think those are guys that you can convince to go elsewhere and get more playing time. There will probably also be someone who leaves for more money too.

Ben said this on Hawk Talk last night.

They have filed the paperwork; now it's a waiting game.

After we win an @EvilMonkeyInTheCloset NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP next month, will we be preseason #1 with this roster? ;)

Some of these guys are going to hit the portal. You can almost guarantee it. Some might be surprises. Might as well brace yourself for it.

I could live without Jacob Koch (unless that upsets his cousin & uncle and they leave) and Matteoni and possibly Cam next year if we need to free up spots. I have to believe there will be a lot of talent wanting to play for Ben McCollum and the Hawks next year!
