The big change occurred in 2021, when the ruling body of college sports, the NCAA, allowed athletes to cash in on their “name, image and likeness” through advertising and various endorsements.

That’s an interesting way to describe the NCAA losing the Alston case 9-0.

The next natural step was to start lobbying DC to legislate control I suppose.

I am sure you know this but the Alston case was only part of it.... The "summer of George Floyd" was also a big factor. NIL didn't mean you had to have an open transfer portal etc. That came from the idea that "ownership" (ie: the schools) were creating inequity by forcing kids to sit out if they transferred. Once you opened the portal -- with NIL on top of that the entire thing came tumbling down.

Do you have any thoughts on the author’s description of how NIL came to be, which was the entirety of my post?

Lol...yeah, it was George Floyd!!!

Cmon man...not everything you may hate is due to George Floyd.

There are anti-trust issues with not allowing an adult to earn a living. With NIL approved that was an easy and logical argument to make legally for the players. It's that simple. No need to blame it on a boogeyman that was chocked to death by the government.

The current system if it's not fixed is unsustainable. I don't have a problem with players getting paid, but these multi million dollar NIL deals, with no limits, no guidelines, and no loyalty are not only unwise, but unfair to the schools paying these exorbitant salaries.

Enough is enough.

At least with college sports, we can all breathe a sigh of relief that these kids are already legal adults.

The National Championship is now purchased. Those who can afford it will buy it every year.

West Virginia can't afford it.

If you're okay with that, then great. Enjoy watching the same teams win every year.

After 20+ years of being a season ticket holder, I refuse to spend money on a lost cause.

I hope they fix it.

I don't have a problem with schools raising as much as they can. However there have to be some guidelines so everyone is playing under the same rules.

Contracts require comittments. Breaches require financial reimbursements. Poaching or tampering requires penalties or remuneration. And salaries require limits based on market pricing, so everyone has a chance to compete.

Right now it's exactly as @30CAT describes, a free for all to the highest bidders who can simply buy a championship by outspending everyone else.

No one wants to see that.

Take the top 5 conferences, ax the rest. Make the NCAA an entity like the NFL. No more universities doing their own thing.

Make salary caps on players based on the lowest funded school. Put salary caps on coaching staffs, from the head coach on down.

Better yet put spending caps on each university, based on the average budget of all schools combined. No private money goes to players.

But this crap of Mark Cuban, for example, purchasing championships for his university has got to go.

Currently, especially for WVU fans, college football sucks.

All excellent ideas that will never happen. Too much money involved. However, outstanding thinking in this post. (y)

Truly unfair to the high school kids and the non profit sports. So many young people depend on the partial scholarships that they have earned and proven they have great work ethics.

He is doing a roundtable now with Saban, Meyers, etc. I would love to listen in. They are going to share it live on Fox News when it starts.

In any area of the private sector, if you have 4 different employers in 5 years the job offers are going to come to a halt.
