Article: On Tom Brands' future, possible changes for Iowa wrestling | Leistikow

FWIW, I am not convinced that Bassett and Co were the answer here. If they were all that then someone else in the top 8-10 teams would have snapped them up IMO. They didn't. They "fell" all the way to Va Tech..."missing" at least 8 or 10 other top teams that certainly would have liked them in their lineup...as wrestlers.

It is also true that they have yet to wrestle a single match for V Tech and they may, OR may not, be a positive, stable force for their lineup. Time will have to tell on that, NONE of us can know the future on that at this point. But I would be willing to bet that they don't all complete their careers as Hokies. There is already too much smoke and drama going on with them to think that they will all stay put for 4-5 years...anywhere.

Generally speaking, yes, Iowa needs to land a share of the super top end guys...but I am not at all convinced that the Bassett's were the ultimate answer here. There is apparently much more behind the scenes than just their wrestling prowess,
The other two top dogs already had their stable full.

So you're saying that if you know the rules are going to eventually change, then why not break them now?

Hmm. Okay.
1. Yes. Especially if you know they are going to be changed and not enforced. Are you familiar with Dan Gable?

Or;

This is where a coach and athletic director release statement forcing UsaW’s hand. Supposedly OK state received the “okay” regarding Jax but wouldn’t answer the phone for Tom….

So then that begs the questions as to what occurred when Tom told Bassett no. Was there a rational discussion that involved options, knowing that what they asked for would be possible shortly.

No, I don't necessarily mean that. I was asking the poster for clarification on what HE meant by loosening up and doing what is necessary.
Basset tells Tom he wants XYZ. Tom says no. Presumably thinks it violates rules. Basset goes some place else, gets what he wants and that location is not cited. Point being, the rules are no longer clear and coaches doing their own interpretation. Look at the tampering going on in football and no one is cited.

Dear God. You truly are a f*cking moran.

And apparently so am I for engaging in this conversation. Lesson learned.

Please feel free not to respond.

Everyone complaining on a message board didn't get Tom fired shocker
That's a wildly disingenuous take of this lol. It would have been the things that everyone was complaining about that would have been the reason he got fired. I don't think many, save a select few (that I'm not sure are Hawkeye fans), thought they would ever be the reason TnT are let go.

* As an absolute outsider, I feel like that attendance number and lessening fan engagement in a positive manner would indeed be the primary reason they would be let go,if they ever are.

It’s a good article. Most interesting thing to me is it says Goetz was involved in both the Bo Basset situation and the Endene situation and that Goetz was fully on board with both decisions.

Stating the obvious, if we didn’t have either of those issues then attitudes about Iowa wrestling would be a lot different.

This is the lamest puff piece “interview” about a deep dive into the program ever.
Most of it is ridiculous comparisons to the football program.

Was the AD not contacted by this journalist to offer up her thoughts on the program and her public support of the coach?
This was them intentionally inserting the framework around changes have to be made, the 2014 KF references were warnings, questions about style of wrestling - which Tom failed to answer to satisfaction - and failures on recruiting and transfers. Add in the falling ticket numbers, if by July no changes have been made, and ticket numbers continue to fall, and there are viable options this setup reasoning for Beth to make that change.

And the AD backed the staff on both situations and she was involved. But all the people who have no clue about either situation are the ones who are right 🤷.

For the buyout money context, season ticket sales lagging is much more impactful than the buyout. They have dropped 3,000 season ticket holders since 2024. Even more if you go back to Spencer’s senior year.

Losing 4,000 season ticket holders over the last few years is killer. 4,000 x 250 = $1,000,000 per year

A new coach getting butts in the seats would be huge.

The Bassett situation is a gift to Tom because it distracts from the far more important systemic development issues. Losing Bassett (and more importantly Melvin Miller) hurts the program obviously, but not as much as the flaws in the coaching have hurt to this point. Having Bassett committed would do nothing to change what we've seen this year.

What? LOL! There's a lot of reasons for guys hitting the portal, has very little to do with not being "perfect" or they were forced out from their previous spot. That list is very short.

The list of Iowa transfers into the program are by a wide margin a list of guys who wanted to wrestle and hopefully upgrade on multiple fronts at Iowa, a place with one hell of a wrestling legacy, and leads the nation in attendance for the large majority if not the entire time since they were born.

These days it can be purely money, and we've seen what appears to be some who's sole motivation is money.

Iowa isn't looking to add a full squad of malcontents at their previous school(s) I assure you.

Believe it or not, a LOT of guys around the country would love to have been recruited and still be recruited by Iowa (even before they got "paid"). The program is wounded, but last rites haven't been administered just yet.

I am not saying that all transfer portal guys have issues. I am saying the pool of transfers that are difference makers for a team like Iowa is already pretty shallow. Taking away the guys with issues makes it very shallow and that sometimes you may not have what you need in the portal. I think 133 is going to be like that this coming offseason. The overall talent is too high in the weight class those guys are going anywhere.

I must have missed that quote from the AD. Can you post it? Unnamed sources doesn't cut it. If the AD actually backed it she should say so. I'm guessing she at most would say we support the decisions of the head coach when it comes to roster management. That is a great way of saying nothing.

I can promise you that other top programs made decisions that the juice wasn’t worth the squeeze when it comes to this family. Certainly not all programs thought that, and certainly there is little doubt as to the upside but I know for a fact a few top programs made the business decision not to be involved despite the talent.

He's right.

There's a reason Tom gets to keep his job. And it's because he's sold the right people (and person). For both the Bassett and Endene situations, Beth was made aware of them prior to the decision coming down. He can understand the fallout from both of those decisions. He made sure he had the blessing of his AD and it allows him and the athletic department to not feel responsible to answer to the general public.

Very long way of saying Tom is no dummy.

You mean the rules that changed a month later that officially allowed what was already occurring?
Seem crazy that Tom and especially the AD had no clue this would be fine in a month. Did Bassett’s know, and just couldn’t wait one month. If so, they are fools. Didn’t they give up a **** load of money to go to V tech, and the NIL rules had changed to prevent these crazy pay outs like he was getting but he was grandfathered in. Decommitting ended him being able to get paid that kind of money anywhere. I think PSU and OSU, where he thought he would end up after decommitting withdrew their offer after seeing how they screwed Iowa, and are the only teams in the country so loaded with young talent that they didn’t need them. The only other team named after decommitting was Nebraska, and we knew they wouldn’t end up there. Could you imagine how optimistic we would be if we knew we were adding Bo, Melvin, and the Raney twins to our line up next fall.

Was actually over 2 months it was legal Sept 1 . So it was illegal all summer July and August. June 23 was the day he announced he's looking elsewhere

That may well be, but if the Bassett group was that sure fire then why didn't #1 and #2 recruit over whoever they have? This is something that they definitely will do when it suits them, right?

And what about the other 6 to 10 teams that would be pretty clearly over V. Tech?

No matter...time will tell and that's all any of us can be sure about now.

That is certainly one interpretation/theory ^^, but definitely not the only one. None of us really know for sure what happened, do we?

I think it is noteworthy that Iowa AD supported the decision. That still doesn't prove anything for sure.

We also don't know if what the Bassett's ultimately received from V. Tech was equal, greater or lesser than the Iowa "package". It could be any of those scenarios.

Next year will be disastrous. Season tickets will decrease. Scanned tickets will decrease. It will be as pathetic as Fran's last year as basketball coach. One time in my life it would be nice to have a proactive AD at Iowa, that can actually see the writing on the wall. My guess is there are just enough donors who abhor change to force her to keep the dunces around for another year.

My simple point of contention is how did this blowup go down?

Did iowa and tom do everything they could to keep Bo? Were they able to convey what Bo wanted was possible but not yet or was it a simple “no,” and they didn’t want to deal with the family’s BS?

Did Bo de-commit because he was told no or was it how he was told no? With NIL, unfortunately a head coach has to put up with some diva like stuff.

I read nothing into Beth supporting his decision. He goes to her and says in order to keep Basset I have to bend/break rules and I’m going to follow what I think the rules are. Of course Beth is going to agree with him. She’s not going to put her job on the line for Tom.

And that's why universities have compliance offices because they know the rules and how to interpret them. Beth isn't gonna know the rule nor should she.

It would be impossible for her to know all of the rules for each of the sports - that's why she has "people." It's also why she has to have confidence that the coaches aren't breaking rules and are asking questions when guidance is needed.

I think this is an important topic to discuss. Seems to me that recruiting rules have changed and other coaches are willing to “do whatever’s necessary” to get a recruit in house. Even if you break or bend a rule who’s going to enforce it. Tom needs to loosen up and do whats necessary.
The University of Iowa Athletic Department doesn't look at it the same way you do...
When it comes to break/bend the rules.
Ultimately that is who Tom has to answer to (and in some instances, get permission from)

There's no way that anyone in or around the program is going to say "yeah, we're going to fire the head coach" two days before the postseason starts. This article is pretty meaningless. If Iowa flops at nationals, they could easily make a change despite what they are saying now.
If you are an AD, you know how tough it is to have teams consistently contending for titles or team trophies. What program at Iowa even comes close to having the results of the wrestling team? An AD is going to be darn sure before removing a guy with TnT's record. That being said, I would be a bit worried if I were one of the assistants.

You're the guy who rides the short bus, steals the younger kids lunch money and later on in the day has his tongue stuck to the flagpole.
Do those kids exist? Did they T8k UR lunch money yesterday at recess? I hope you were able to T8k them dwn and reclaim your $.

A lot of semantics being argued here. The thing is even if Tom consulted Beth and they are lock step in agreement on those issues and Tom's been a good boy- doesn't mean Tom won't get canned after next season.

The BASSETT thing is a B1G issue!!! You can NOT have this level of recruit + what comes WITH IT who is committed, leave!!!! Do NOT care what the ISSUE(s) were!!!! You FIGURE IT OUT and you FIX IT and you MOVE FORWARD!!!!!

That kid WAS the FUTURE of the program!!! He was bringing EVERYTHING you needed at the RIGHT TIME!!!!
I have to check myself into a hospital now... I agree with everything IH just said....

Tom is 110% full of crap. They absolutely do not have the right guys to be anywhere close to competitive for winning nationals. I don't see anything remotely close to what they have been doing making a difference. The injury excuse is no longer valid, it's the same every year so that is also a negative for his program. Given the recruiting problems I don't think he even knows what the right guys look like.

I bet it’s not just ticket sales and butts in seats that have diminished. Probably a loss in viewership as well. Hawk events used to be a highlight of my week week but I’m no longer a regular viewer. And those I do watch are often recorded so I can fast forward through the boring parts (ie the first 6 minutes of the matches where no one scores a TD).
