Ava Heiden has been named a First Team All-Big Ten selection by both the coaches and the media. Heiden was a unanimous selection by the coaches.

Second team isn't exactly getting robbed. Lots of great players in the B1G this year and it's hard to argue that any of the first team weren't deserving of the award. I also think that she was overshadowed somewhat by Ava's breakout performance.
I think Hannah deserved it more than Jazzy

Jazzy 17.9 & 5.5
but oh well, solid year none the less
Both have had very good years, but I think Jazzy had superior metrics in every category except for rebounds. I think the same could be said for Parchment who was relegated to honorable mention.

It must have been a real challenge for Betts to shut down all of those awesome high scoring centers in the B1G.
Close is coach of the year. So is the criteria that you lead your team to their predicted finish? Jan or Dawn deserved it IMHO.
I love Addie, I think she will end up being a really good player, But her being named to the all freshman team over Journey is crazy.

This. Hannah was certainly not robbed. Quality players all, and Hannah was fairly inconsistent early this year, then gained steam in the back half, although missing two games here late. I'd say 2nd team just outside the top 10 is about right when you consider the addition of UCLA and USC to the B1G it got harder, especially for the women to make that top group.
Well it's obviously not based on performance. Journey was very consistent and effective this year and had the second highest conference PER on the team after Ava. She was definitely robbed.

That one is a bit surprising. I guess the flashes she showed in games like the OSU game put her over the top for some.

Agreed. ^^ I think the picks look pretty legit for the Iowa players. The only one that may have been "robbed" a little bit is Journey Houston. To me, she is one of top freshman in the league.
Otherwise, they seem reasonable to me.

It's not really a slap at Deal. It's really just more a realization that maybe had Journey come into the league with greater fanfare she'd be getting more recognition for what's been a great freshman campaign. Addie might end up an All American, but there's no arguing about who's had a better start to their career because it's not even close. Journey has been fabulous.
Agree, also this is the coaches vote, so it is validation from opposing coaches on her play this year.
Journey Houston is playing great ball as well. Her time will come soon!
No doubt as an Iowa fan, I'm biased, but Stremlow should have gotten Honorable Mention also!
She's had a great year. Again, so many great players in this league it's hard to stand out among them.
Imagine how hard the picks would be if they limited the all league teams to only a starting five instead of ten.
Agree - I don't get this at all. If the team could only keep 1 player, Deal or Houston, who would you pick? Based on this year's results it's a no brainer in my eyes.............
Betts, much like the former LSU prima donna AR (I avoid writing her name), is unusually tall and lanky. She is allowed to hook defenders constantly, which is supposed to be against the rules. She, like many tall girls, dominates not because of her incredible athletic talent but because she is . . . tall. You can't defend tall in the women's game because women, unlike men, are not built for jumping. In the men's game, giving up 2 or 3 or 4 inches is seldom a big deal because men can overcome height disadvantages by jumping . . . even many of the white guys.
Anyway, if you wanna be an award-winning women's basketball player, the easiest path is be exceptionally tall.
Ava Heiden and Hannah Stuelke are far better athletes and far more talented basketball players than is Betts but, alas, they're definitely not as tall.

Deal came in with a greater rep than did Houston, and in every phase of life, and in sports at even the highest pro levels, rep often matters more than results. It clearly did here. An objective review of the two players' performances would show Houston with a clear edge.
But then when it comes to awards, all you have to remember is this: When he was at Butler, Todd Lickliter was named 2006-07 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Coach of the Year.
That's some serious Iowa dominance.
Addie was named freshman of the week twice. Journey was not named once. Doubt Hawks would have beaten OSU without Addie. I'm glad they are both Hawks.
This is just so wrong. Betts is an amazing passer, she is almost impossible to double team ( which is a huge skill by the way) always plays with her head up, is physical on both ends of the floor and plays with a chip on her shoulder. To say she's only good because she's tall is totally disrespectful. And you're wrong about the men. Shaq came into the league and basically never took a shot from more than 5 feet from the basket. He was more physically dominant than any other player out there for many years. This does not make you any less of a player.
Good points, but while Addie had a couple of outstanding games, Houston was consistent all season, and the stats back that up. But yes, it's good that Iowa has them both.
This year's anomaly will be corrected when Ava wins it next year.

Whether you like it or not being physical is a hugely important part of basketball today. This isn't 1977 where you couldn't dunk or guard a guy or girl close. Every single coach out there talks about his or her team being more physical than the other player or team. And if you're not you're going to get your *** whipped. And there are plenty of other players that are tall and guess what, they aren't near as good as Lauren Betts. Credit where credit is due, as voted on by both the media and the coaches. I think this suggestion that she's unworthy because her dominance is related to her size is pretty unfair. Of course her size is a huge asset with respect to her success, especially on the boards and on defense, but that shouldn't in any way detract from the success that she's had which is what these awards are supposed to be about. It's not about which players are most skilled. I would argue that Ava is a better and more skilled offensive player today because of her efficiency, but you could also argue that her size is also a huge asset, but she's not the rim protector that Betts is.Sorry, Mrs. Betts.
