I’m sorry but as a very hard working dad of 3 kids sports players being excluded from paying taxes while I’m taxed to the maximum degree so that politicians can get votes by saying they help recruit players really pisses me off. I mean that is so ridiculous. If you want these kids making millions to not pay a dime in taxes what the hell am I paying a massive chunk of my salary for?

This. I'm not in KY anymore so it wouldn't't hurt my wallet, but optics of this are just insane. Millionaires don't need tax breaks while normal people are struggling in this economy.

Big question is why? Who thinks it’s a great idea to not tax ****-tons of $$$ given without merit to college athletes?

Those of us nearing retirement who are looking at how the irs will grab “our” 40* whatever funds think a little differently.

The Answer is not to make them pay taxes but that no one in this country should have too. We didn't until 1913 and that is when we created the Federal reserve and instilled income tax. Before that we became a great country with all money coming in from Tariffs.

Came to say this. And I think this is how most working folks will feel.

I was always for College athletes getting paid. But getting paid means you pay taxes.

Absolutely do it. No question! If you aren't doing things like this, others will and you get left behind.
I absolutely dislike the concept of high earners being exempt from taxes while people that make less and work hard pay and I'm sure you don't like that either. But if our competitors are doing it, we are at a competitive disadvantage if we don't either do the same or pay enough extra to offset the tax.

Seems pretty clear the SEC states are going to do anything they can money wise to get a leg up in college athletics as those states continue to generally live in poverty. SEC? SEC?

And yeah, sort of funny to see folks coming to their senses about the wealthy when on the old board guys in places like KY and elsewhere were groveling at the feet of some incredibly rich people. Folks waking up from their slumber?

This post underlines how far society has turned. Seriously. When sports has become this big, to put any time and effort into something like this when you have people who have lived their entire lives paying for a home and then to be taxed till death to live in that home they said for instead of putting all this time and effort into finding an avenue to eliminate all property taxes on seniors shows where these states put their priorities.
These players need to be treated like everyone else who works; tax the hell out of them.

Raise income taxes on the wealthy.
It depends on what is and who defines wealthy. It’s like the alternative minimum tax (AMD) enacted a few years ago and actually affected few folks. After a few years of income increases it started getting more and more people. I wonder when people will realize that practically the only folks with a pension, sometimes including some heath care, are government workers. These folks have been promised benefits that they haven’t funded (surprise, surprise) and may cause pain to future workers Who often don’t enjoy this benefit.

I agree 1000%. Only thing I was saying above is when UK misses on players when other states offer more incentives and money most of the folks here will point the finger at the coaches and then we fire them and hire someone else and literally have a revolving door and become Indiana

There is just too much money being thrown around these days in sports with NIL, GM's, sports betting and so on for someone not to wonder about fraud somewhere in all this. Now states getting involved when they need to be their jobs and focus on the people who work and live in their districts and stay the hell out of college sports by creating additional layer of incentives like this.

This is a tough one, even for me, who would admittedly sell some of you to a China work camp in exchange for landing a 5-star.

North Carolina did this also, right? Seems some states are doing it. And while I dont care what these athletes make or if they never pay taxes, how do you tell the rest of the state that they owe?

Id rather find other ways to incentivize recruits to come here. If nothing else, if youre competing with a school from a state that doesnt tax the players, then up the ante a bit to match. Problem solved.

High tariffs were literally the reason the 16th amendment passed. Not only did it pass but it was unanimous in the Senate, almost unanimous in the House, and easily passed the 3/4 threshold for ratification through the states. Only six states didn’t pass it in their state legislatures. And when the 16th Amendment passed only the top 1% of Americans had to pay anything and it was 2% flat tax. Even before the 16th amendment many states had passed an income tax because they started to see the good in having an educated population and expanding public schools., among other things.

People were tired of paying a regressive tax through tariffs. They wanted the richest to pay their fair share.

Dude, we blew up as a country and became a powerhouse more when we were taxing the wealthy a lot more. 1913 we were a blossoming super and on top of that the world economy was different. This is the dumbest take possible. The same as saying tariffs aren't paid by the consumers, bc they are. It's proven.
