In my opinion California is going to see a huge increase in talent and depth over the next few years. We have gotten our foot in the door but it would be huge to start getting the top guys.
Bummer but mad respect for moving up a weight to face another highly ranked kidBorge lost in championship
Guess what program is nice and close to California with the hottest coach in the country and limitless money? ASU can forget about getting top California kids now. Cael and Taylor will get the cream of the crop each year.In my opinion California is going to see a huge increase in talent and depth over the next few years. Borge is an interesting case. He could've had an easy path to a title at 138 where i believe he was undefeated on the year but decided to challenge himself by bumping up a weight & tsking on a 3 time champ. Ive also heard he only trains with his brother & dad so as soon as he branches out & gets in other rooms I think he'll be a stud.Recap from this weekend:
Amato - District Champ!
Duffy - District Champ!
P. Kenny - District Champ!
Mocco - Region Champ!
F. Bachmann - Region Champ!
J. Bachmann - Region Champ!
Calkins - State Champ!
Borge - State Runner-up!
Season already over:
Youngblut - State Champ!
Regan - National Prep Champ!
S. Kenny - No post season; surgery.
Duffy built an 11-0 lead over the #5 kid in the state then pinned him. He got outstanding wrestler award for his efforts and became just the 3rd 4x district champ in school history and first since 2013Duffy with 3 pins - District Champion!
P. Kenny with 3 pins - District Champion!
Amato with 2 pins and a tech - District Champion!
Mocco with a forfeit and 2 pins into his Region Finals
Joe Bachmann with 3 tech falls into his Region Finals
Fred Bachmann with a tech and 2 decisions into his Region finals
No updates on Borge and Calkins yet
It’s impressive he’s ranked as high as he is not ever being from a wrestling state even as good as Iowa, and not going to a big wrestling school or kids club. Must have high ceiling. I know his brother is a year older and 70 ish recruit going to Missouri, so Missouri could be getting a diamond in the rough.Borge is an interesting case. Really like our guys coming in but looking at them you really see how badly we need to recruit & land some middle heavy weights
Hes went from Utah to Oklahoma would be interesting if he did what Gabe Arnold did and comes to iowa city a year early. No idea if thats gonna happen just seems like a guy who would think about itIt’s impressive he’s ranked as high as he is not ever being from a wrestling state even as good as Iowa, and not going to a big wrestling school or kids club. Wasn’t he In Missouri first also? I guess Oklahoma has pretty decent wrestling.Hes went from Utah to Oklahoma would be interesting if he did what Gabe Arnold did and comes to iowa city a year early. No idea if thats gonna happen just seems like a guy who would think about it
I found it odd he moved to Oklahoma. I’d be worried he’d flip to Okie State, but with their depth and incoming talent, I find think Borge would sniff the lineupHes went from Utah to Oklahoma would be interesting if he did what Gabe Arnold did and comes to iowa city a year early. It would be helpful to recruit guys who could move up a weight or two and compete for a title. I know this has been discussed on other threads, however it makes sense to get some guys with a little more length.Borge is an interesting case. Him and his family talk to Tom almost daily. They aren’t going anywhere as long at Tom is the coach.I found it odd he moved to Oklahoma. I’d be worried he’d flip to Okie State, but with their depth and incoming talent, I find think Borge would sniff the lineup
I hope he does the Arnold and Voinovich rite of moving to Iowa for his senior year
and I think he was already in Oklahoma when he committed to the hawksHim and his family talk to Tom almost daily. They aren’t going anywhere as long at Tom is the coach.
Well, hopefully they like the new coach after we finish 4th at Big Tens and 6th or 7th at Nationals.Him and his family talk to Tom almost daily. They aren’t going anywhere as long at Tom is the coach.
Good seeing you in the forum Chief! We miss you guys that actually have real info!Luthius out here doing the Lord's work. Thanks!!
Mocco finally looking big. I bet he's put on like 15lbs since summer when he looked so much smaller than merrilMicheal Mocco with a first round fall
Onto the Quarters!
There are plenty of D1 college heavyweights that look small compared to Merrill. He’s definitely a man amongst boys in high school.Mocco finally looking big. I bet he's put on like 15lbs since summer when he looked so much smaller than merril
He deffenitly has the upper hand on that ross and mocco are more lean merrill is just built like a brick wallThere are plenty of D1 college heavyweights that look small compared to Merrill. He’s definitely a man amongst boys in high school.
Number four at his weight… Do, he’s currently a top 50 or so recruit?Calkins having a strong finish to his hs career. Believe the guy he just beat is #8 at 215. Calkins also beat Willie's #5 recently. His finals will be a rematch of Doc B. Calkins lost 5-8 in that one. Willie has his opp #4 at the weight.

So, top 25?Nope. Lower. Those are two things that are related but not directly connected.
Calkins and Duffy, both kinda under the radar guys. Hope they turn out to be diamonds in the rough.Number four at his weight… Do, he’s currently a top 50 or so recruit?
They've had great years this year deffenitly something to build onCalkins and Duffy, both kinda under the radar guys. Hope they turn out to be diamonds in the rough.
Joe will face Hudson Hohman who lost to Bo Bassett in the state championship at 145lbs last yearFreddy and Joe Bachmann with a pair of decisions to both make the State Finals!

After seeing Bassett rag doll Music like that, teching him at end of second, I’m more impressed with the way Joe kept both matches very respectable, including riding him for a period. Joe has looked smaller than everyone he’s wrestled. Would like to see how he could hang with Haer. If Bo handles him easy tomorrow it will really show how good Joe is. I also watched Hutcherson’s matches since he is someone I’m sure we are after. He’s been very impressive for a sophomore at a big boy weight. PSU could really use him at 197 or heavyweight, so I’m sure we don’t stand a chance. Okyst could use him as Merrill’s replacement also.Joe will face Hudson Hohman who lost to Bo Bassett in the state championship at 145lbs last year
